Abstract:
The present invention concerns an improved apparatus for cleaning the interior of a liquid handling probe to reduce the amount time and the volume of wash fluid required to clean the probe and minimize carryover of material between different samples. In addition to the probe, the apparatus includes one or more wash fluid reservoirs, a compressed gas supply, one or more pumps, two or more valve-controlled probe lines and a controller for opening and closing the valves and actuating the pump(s) at desired time intervals. The invention further concerns a method of cleaning a liquid handling probe using the claimed apparatus and comprising sequential steps of pumping wash fluid and compressed gas through the probe.

Reaction Temperature Control System

US Patent:
4858155, Aug 15, 1989
Filed:
Dec 24, 1985
Appl. No.:
6/813028
Inventors:
Dobson Okawa - Anaheim CA
Wing S. Pang - West Covina CA
Dang Ngo - Cypress CA
George Shibata - Chino CA
Assignee:
Beckman Instruments, Inc. - Fullerton CA
International Classification:
G01K 1500
G01K 702
US Classification:
364557
Abstract:
Apparatus for controlling reaction temperatures in a chemical analyzer comprises a thermoelectric element operating in response to a temperature sensor, and control means capable of predicting a setpoint deviation for a future time period, and, when an overshoot is predicted, reducing a control signal for the element by an amount proportional to a current setpoint deviation. The apparatus includes at least one reaction cell and a buffer unit for thermally stabilizing a fluid that is fed, on demand, into the reaction cell, the cell and the buffer unit having separate thermoelectric elements and sensors. A microcomputer control system generates independent control signals for the elements.

Automatic Chemistry Analyzer

US Patent:
5902548, May 11, 1999
Filed:
Aug 13, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/133928
Inventors:
Richard P. Watts - Diamond Bar CA
David L. Goodale - Yorba Linda CA
Michael L. Bell - Fullerton CA
Dang M. Ngo - Fountain Valley CA
Songai Tu - Yorba Linda CA
Michael Tran - Aliso Viejo CA
Assignee:
Beckman Instruments, Inc. - Fullerton CA
International Classification:
G01N35/00
US Classification:
422 63
Abstract:
An automatic chemistry analyzer is provided having a high throughput and a high reliability. The analyzer uses nephelometric and turbimetric analyzers to analyze a wide variety of parameters within liquid samples typically generated in, for example, a large medical testing laboratory. The machine employs a unique probe and stirring rod assembly mounted at a slight angle with one another using rack and pinion assemblies so that the lower end of the probe and the lower end of the stirring rod are in very close proximity to one another. This feature allows the machine to be used in unusually small reaction cuvettes. The analysis machine also includes an onboard control sample so that the machine can be programmed to periodically calibrate its analyzing equipment during the course of normal operation. The machine also includes a sample station carousel having retainer clips for retaining a sample container rack which is constructed to retain a bar-coded card containing information regarding reagents used in the machine. A bar code reader located proximate to the sample carousel reads the bar-coded reagent information into the controller.
