Filed:
Oct 18, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/420164
Inventors:
Albert N. Santilli - Pepper Pike OH
Assignee:
Kapp Surgical Instrument, Inc. - Cleveland OH
International Classification:
A61B 132
US Classification:
600205, 600206, 600229, 600232
Abstract:
A stabilizer for use in surgical procedures such as coronary bypass surgery includes an elongate, rigid handle, a neck at the end of the handle, a base leg connected to the end of the neck, and first and second spaced, generally flat fingers that are disposed generally parallel with each other and which lie in a plane disposed at an angle from the longitudinal axis of the handle. The fingers can be used to press against the surface of the heart to stabilize it during surgery. In another embodiment, the handle is in the form of a flexible member that can be adjusted in a variety of positions. In either embodiment, the attachment between the fingers and the heart can be enhanced by providing serrations for the underside of the fingers, or by making the fingers hollow and forming a plurality of openings in the underside of the fingers in order to apply a vacuum to the underside of the fingers.

Spinous Process Clamp For Spinal Fusion And Method Of Operation

US Patent:
6364883, Apr 2, 2002
Filed:
Feb 23, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/792696
Inventors:
Albert N. Santilli - Pepper Pike OH, 44124
International Classification:
A61B 1758
US Classification:
606 69, 606 61
Abstract:
A spinous process clamp employs a pair of elongate plates that are positioned on either side of the spinous processes of vertebrae that are to be fused. The plates are joined by fasteners, preferably bolts and nuts. When the bolts and nuts are tightened, the spinous processes are clamped between the plates, thereby preventing motion between the clamped vertebral bodies. In an embodiment especially adapted for immobilizing a patients lower lumbar region, the clamp is provided with projections that engage the patients sacrum and brackets that are connected to the sacrum. The invention eliminates the use of pedicle screws, wires, or hooks, thereby greatly simplifying the installation process.

A surgical stabilizer especially adapted for use in cardiac surgery includes first and second hollow legs that are disposed generally parallel to each other, each leg having a closed end and an open end. Each leg has an upper surface and a lower surface, the lower surface including a plurality of openings that are disposed adjacent each other. A yoke extends between and connects the first and second legs. A manifold is connected to the open end of each leg. When a suction tube is connected to the manifold, a vacuum can be applied to the openings in the legs so as to attract the surface of the heart to the legs. An adjustable embodiment of the invention includes first and second support arms that are connected to first and second legs. The support arms are connected pivotally to each other to permit the legs to be moved toward or away from each other. The legs can be provided with small pins, sharpened edges, and/or suction in order to engage or grasp the heart.

606 61, 606 69, 623 1716
Abstract:
A cage plate for spinal fusion includes a cage made of a biologically inert material such as titanium, the cage being sufficiently porous to facilitate bony ingrowth and spinal fusion, and a plate to which the cage is attached, the plate being made of a biologically inert material such as titanium. In the preferred embodiment, the plate is generally rectangular and has a longitudinal axis that in use is disposed parallel with the longitudinal axis of the spinal column, the plate being curved when viewed from the end, the curvature approximating that of the vertebral bodies to be fused, and the plate being curved when viewed from the side, the curvature approximating that of the vertebral bodies to be fused. The plate includes a plurality of openings adjacent its corners. In use, an opening is formed in the spinal column of approximately the same size and shape as the cage.

Intervertebral Spacer

US Patent:
6572654, Jun 3, 2003
Filed:
Oct 4, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/679014
Inventors:
Albert N. Santilli - Pepper Pike OH, 44128
International Classification:
A61F 244
US Classification:
623 1716, 623 1711
Abstract:
A porous intervertebral spacer comprises a plurality of strands of fused, tortuous wire of a biologically inert material, the porosity of the spacer being sufficient to facilitate tissue ingrowth and bony fusion. The spacer also can comprise a mixture of such strands and biologically inert beads. A method of fusing adjacent vertebrae of the spine includes the steps of excising a portion of an intervertebral disc separating adjacent vertebrae and portions of the adjacent vertebrae to define a graft bed, and inserting into the graft bed at least one porous intervertebral spacer according to the invention.

Aorta Cross Clamp Assembly

US Patent:
6610074, Aug 26, 2003
Filed:
Feb 9, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/781000
Inventors:
Albert N. Santilli - Pepper Pike OH, 44124
International Classification:
A61B 1708
US Classification:
606158, 606157, 606151
Abstract:
An aorta cross clamp assembly includes a clamp having movable jaws and a removable actuator having movable handles. Initially, the actuator is connected to the clamp with the jaws in an open position. When the actuator handles are closed, the jaws also will be closed. The clamp is provided with a toothed retainer that prevents the jaws from being opened accidently. The actuator can be detached from the clamp and removed from the operative site, leaving the locked clamp in place. When it is desired to remove the clamp, the actuator can be reattached to the clamp and used to disengage the toothed retainer. The actuator then can be used to spread the jaws in order to permit the clamp to be removed. The clamp and the actuator are provided in two forms. In one form, the toothed retainer is engaged and disengaged by movement toward and away from the jaws (âhorizontalâ movement).

Porous Intervertebral Spacer

US Patent:
6673075, Jan 6, 2004
Filed:
Dec 3, 2001
Appl. No.:
10/004916
Inventors:
Albert N. Santilli - Pepper Pike OH, 44124
International Classification:
A61B 1756
US Classification:
606 61, 623 1716, 623 2351
Abstract:
An intervertebral spacer suitable for use as a spinal implant includes a rigid, porous body made of a biocompatible material. The body is strong enough to accommodate loads imposed by adjacent vertebrae and is porous enough to facilitate tissue ingrowth and bony fusion. The porosity is provided by a plurality of randomly sized, substantially interconnected voids disposed throughout the body. The spacer can be manufactured by a variety of techniques. In one technique, a plurality of polymer pellets are placed in a mold of a desired shape and heated to melting or near-melting temperature. The pellets are fused together to form a porous, rigid structure. In another technique, tortuous strands of a biologically inert material are intermixed with each other and are sintered into a desired shape in a mold. The spacer also can be made of a sintered mixture of strands and pellets of a biologically inert material. The material for the strands and the pellets typically is titanium or a titanium alloy, although other metals and certain polymers such as PEEK can be used.

Surgical Retractor Having Lifting Capability
