Us Patents

Polyarylate-Polyamide Block Copolymers

US Patent:
4937297, Jun 26, 1990
Filed:
May 2, 1988
Appl. No.:
7/189226
Inventors:
Barry D. Dean - Belle Mead NJ
Assignee:
Amoco Corporation - Chicago IL
International Classification:
C08L 6700
C08L 7700
US Classification:
525425
Abstract:
Novel, well-defined thermoplastic block copolymers containing polyarylate and polyamide blocks. Preferably formed via a cycloaddition reaction of a polyamide having at least one terminal double bond, with a polyarylate having at least one dihydroarylcyclobutenyl moiety. They display excellent mechanical properties, improved UV, solvent and stress-crack resistance; good heat resistance and are easy to melt fabricate. They show good compatability with the corresponding homopolymers and are uniquely suited as compatibilizing agents for polyamide-polyarylate blends.

Elastomeric Polyarylate Graft Copolymers

US Patent:
4937287, Jun 26, 1990
Filed:
Feb 17, 1988
Appl. No.:
7/156728
Inventors:
Barry D. Dean - Belle Mead NJ
Assignee:
Amoco Corporation - Chicago IL
International Classification:
C08G 8102
C08G 8100
US Classification:
525152
Abstract:
Novel thermoplastic elastomeric graft copolymers, formed via a cycloaddition reaction of an elastomer containing carbon-carbon double bonds with an aromatic polyether, end-capped with a 1,2-dihydroarylcyclobutenyl moiety, are described. The materials exhibit improved UV and thermal oxidative stability, attractive mechanical properties, and superior heat resistance. They are uniquely suited for impact modification of various thermoplastics such as polyesters, polyether imides, and the like.

Miscible Polyarylate-Polyamide Blends

US Patent:
5115046, May 19, 1992
Filed:
May 6, 1991
Appl. No.:
7/695937
Inventors:
Barry D. Dean - Belle Mead NJ
Assignee:
Amoco Corporation - Chicago IL
International Classification:
C08L 6702
C08L 7710
US Classification:
525425
Abstract:
Miscible, thermoplastic polyarylate-polyamide blends which are fully compatible one-phase polymer solutions. They exhibit a single glass transition temperature intermediate between the glass transition temperature of the two homopolymers. The blended materials exhibit excellent mechanical properties including solvent resistance, stress-crack resistance, melt fabricability, UV and weatherance and good strength at a weld line. Miscibility is accomplished by blending a polyarylate containing about 12 to 50 mole % tertiary butyl substituted aromatic nuclei, with an aliphatic-aromatic polyamide having a ratio of aliphatic to aromatic carbons of about 1. 4 to about 2. 5.
