The listening component collects data about the network environment to enhance a user's experience with the multimedia content. The mediator utilizes the network environment data and the correlation of the multimedia content and the plurality of network devices to automatically select the group devices from the plurality of network devices that maximize a user's viewing or listening pleasure when reproducing the multimedia content on the group of devices.

Computer System And Method For Enhancing Experience Using Networked Devices

US Patent:
7499860, Mar 3, 2009
Filed:
Dec 17, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/321811
Inventors:
David William Baumert - Sammamish WA, US
Jonathan C. Cluts - Sammamish WA, US
Pamela J. Heath - Seattle WA, US
Flora Goldthwaite - Seattle WA, US
Aaron Woodman - Seattle WA, US

Assignee:
Microsoft Corporation - Redmond WA
International Classification:
G10L 11/00
G10L 21/00
US Classification:
704275, 704270
Abstract:
A computer-implemented system and method is provided for enhancing a user experience within an environment. The experience is enhanced using a number of devices that are connected on a network. The method involves monitoring the environment for cues, such as words from a user reading a book. Upon receiving a cue, one or more of the networked devices are prompted to produce a desired effect that is associated with the cue. The experience of those in the environment is enhanced or augmented by the effects produced. The system of the invention uses a computer that executes a script manager component and a device dispatcher component. The script manager component receives the cues and matches the cue with a desired effect that the network device(s) are to produce. The script manager informs the device dispatcher, which instructs the network devices(s) to produce the desired effect.

System And Method For Distributing Digital Content Over A Network

US Patent:
7571328, Aug 4, 2009
Filed:
Feb 1, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/048208
Inventors:
David W. Baumert - Sammamish WA, US
Flora P. Goldthwaite - Seattle WA, US
Gregory L. Hendrickson - Seattle WA, US
Jonathan C. Cluts - Sammamish WA, US
Pamela J. Heath - Seattle WA, US
Assignee:
Microsoft Corporation - Redmond WA
International Classification:
G06F 1/24
US Classification:
713192, 713125, 713168, 380278
Abstract:
A system and method for distributing digital content over a computer network. A set of digital content is provided in a storage location that is accessible by the network. One or more physical tokens store data related to accessing the set of digital content. When a token is at a remote location, a request for the set of digital content to be presented at the remote location is received. In response to this request, presentation of the digital content is allowed at the remote location.

System And Method For Dynamic Media Reproduction

US Patent:
7596296, Sep 29, 2009
Filed:
Apr 15, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/106549
Inventors:
Gregory L. Hendrickson - Redmond WA, US
David W. Baumert - Redmond WA, US
James T. Reichert - Redmond WA, US
Pamela J. Heath - Redmond WA, US
Sven Pleyer - Redmond WA, US
International Classification:
G11B 27/00
H04N 5/93
US Classification:
386 52
Abstract:
A system and related techniques integrate the accessing, retrieving and playback of enhanced music or other digital media or content, including to permit advanced authoring, mixing and environmental inputs and effects. According to embodiments of the invention in one regard, a user may access a playback engine to retrieve and dynamically mix, manage and integrate music content with environmental sensors and effects such as detection people or numbers or people, lighting effects and other sensory experience. Thus the tempo of a mixed music track may vary with the number or persons in a room or the time of day or night, or lighting effects may brighten or dim based on dynamic contrasts in the music or other content. According to further embodiments, the playback engine may permit a user to link or navigate to other community resources such as a Web site detailing an artist, album, movie or soundtrack, or a bulletin board for consumers with an interest in artists, actors or others. Because the music authorizing format and reproduction system may compatibly operate on musical and other content containing defined media extensions and permit the content to be freely mixed and integrated with environmental inputs and effects, the richness and participation of the musical and other playback experience for the user may be enhanced.
