Stelco Inc. - Hamilton
International Classification:
C21B 300
US Classification:
266275, 164337
Abstract:
A molten metal handling vessel, comprising a base and one or more sidewalls surrounding the base and extending upwardly therefrom, the interior surfaces of the base and sidewall(s) each comprising a lining formed from refractory material, the sidewall lining including a ledge spaced a distance from the base lining, the ledge projecting inwardly into the interior of the vessel and extending around at least a quarter of the periphery of the base, and all parts of the sidewall lining below the ledge projecting at least as far into the vessel as does the ledge.

Tundish

US Patent:
6533992, Mar 18, 2003
Filed:
Feb 4, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/244044
Inventors:
Donald Zacharias - Parma OH
Assignee:
Foseco International Limited - Swindon
International Classification:
B22D 4108
US Classification:
266275, 266229, 222594
Abstract:
A tundish of improved flow characteristics for molten metal has an outlet in its base. The outlet is spaced longitudinally of the tundish from a pour zone. The pour zone is positioned to receive a stream of molten steel from a ladle. An impact pad is provided on the floor of the tundish in the pour zone, the impact pad comprising a base having an impact surface, an upwardly extending side wall along the periphery of the base, the side wall having an inner surface with an undercut portion to face the incoming steel stream, and the undercut portion having a surface shape to receive and reverse the direction of flow of the incoming stream. A dam is positioned between the impact pad and the outlet. The dam has one or more holes to allow through-passage of a proportion of the steel, and the dam extends upwardly from the tundish floor about 40-60% of the height of the uppermost level of steel in the tundish.

Metallurgical Impact Pad

US Patent:
6997361, Feb 14, 2006
Filed:
Mar 25, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/395150
Inventors:
Donald Richard Zacharias - Parma OH, US
John Morris - Berea OH, US
Eric Wotsch - Lakewood OH, US
Assignee:
Foseco International Limited - Tamworth
International Classification:
C22B 41/08
US Classification:
222594, 266275, 266236
Abstract:
A tundish impact pad formed from refractory material comprising a base having an impact surface which, in use, faces upwardly against a stream of molten metal entering a tundish, a wall extending upwardly from the base around at least a part of the periphery of the impact surface, one or more portions of the upper part of the wall supporting one or more overhangs which project inwardly over the periphery of the base. At least one of said overhangs has at least a part whose under-surface curves or slopes, the curvature or slope lying in a direction along the length of the wall. Preferably the pad has rectangular base and a pair of opposite walls is provided with an overhang that arches upwardly towards the centre of the wall. An overhang on the second pair of walls can be, for example, planar and parallel to the base. The width of the curved or sloping overhangs increases in both directions away from its centre/top.

Tundish Impact Pad

US Patent:
5518153, May 21, 1996
Filed:
Nov 9, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/338123
Inventors:
Donald R. Zacharias - Parma OH
Bryce R. Jardine - Brunswick OH
Assignee:
Foseco International Limited - Birmingham
International Classification:
C21B 714
US Classification:
222594
Abstract:
A tundish impact pad has a non-uniform construction with a long dimension and a short dimension perpendicular to the long dimension, the long dimension of the impact pad disposed aligned with the long dimension of the tundish on the tundish floor. The impact pad is a body of refractory material capable of withstanding continuous contact with molten steel during the entire use cycle of the tundish. The body has a base with an impact surface, an endless outer side wall extending upwardly from the impact surface, and a top surface substantially parallel to the impact surface and connected to the side wall and defining a non-uniform opening. The side wall also has an interior face which is semi-circular about an axis substantially parallel to the impact surface around the entire extent thereof, or channel-shaped, so that molten steel contacting the impact surface flows outwardly, then in turn inwardly then directed upwardly by the side wall interior face, and then flows out the opening. The opening may be substantially rectangular or oval. The outer side wall may be tapered inwardly at opposite ends at the base and include ears which facilitate mounting of the body in place in a tundish, or may be straight.

Tundish Impact Pad

US Patent:
6159418, Dec 12, 2000
Filed:
Oct 5, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/155761
Inventors:
Donald R. Zacharias - Parma OH
Assignee:
Foseco International Limited - Wiltshire
International Classification:
B22D 4100
US Classification:
266275
Abstract:
A tundish impact pad comprises the body of refractory material capable of withstanding contact with molten steel. The body comprises a base having an impact surface for molten steel, and an outer side wall extending upwardly from the impact surface. The outer side wall extends around the base to completely enclose it, an annular body portion connected to the side wall and providing a top surface substantially parallel to the impact surface and defining an opening into which molten steel can be poured. The lower surface of the annular body portion and the inner face of the side wall define a recess having an undercut portion extending continuously around and above the impact surface. A first portion of the top surface is at a lower level than the remainder at the top surface and the recess beneath the first portion of the top surface has a smaller cross-section than the remainder of the recess. The impact pad is particularly useful with a longitudinally-extending tundish having a steel inlet zone toward the end opposite to the outlet zone(s).
