A method for inhibiting hyperplasia at an anastomotic junction of a vascular fistula or vascular graft comprises exposing the anastomotic junction to vibrational energy at a mechanical index and for a time sufficient to inhibit hyperplasia. Kits are described comprising the catheter or a probe suitable for performing the methods together with instructions for use setting forth the methods. The methods and kits are particularly suitable for treating anastomotic junctions formed to provide vascular access for hemodialysis, hemofiltration, and the like. The methods and kits are also suitable for treating other vascular grafts, such as those formed during cardiac bypass graft surgery, vascular repair, and the like.

High Output Therapeutic Ultrasound Transducer

Pharmasonics, Inc. - Sunnyvale CA
International Classification:
A61M 3100
US Classification:
604501, 604511
Abstract:
A method of enhancing cellular absorption of a substance delivered into a target region of a patients body, comprising: (a) delivering the substance to the target region; and (b) directing vibrational energy to the target region, wherein the vibrational energy is of a type and in an amount sufficient to enhance absorption into cells of the target region.

Implantable Cerebral Protection Device And Methods Of Use

US Patent:
6499487, Dec 31, 2002
Filed:
Aug 17, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/642570
Inventors:
John McKenzie - San Carlos CA
Sachiko Hattori - Sunnyvale CA
Assignee:
Embol-X, Inc. - Mountain View CA
International Classification:
A61B 1900
US Classification:
128898, 623 131, 623 151, 623902, 604 8, 606194, 606200
Abstract:
Described are devices and methods for diverting emboli away from the carotid arteries in the aorta. The devices are aortic diverters that generally comprise a hollow tube with a substantially cylindrical or conical wall, which is impermeable to emboli and which has open ends that allow blood to enter one end, flow through the tube and exit the other end. Additionally, snowshoe aortic diverters, which are planar rather than cylindrical are also shown. The methods of the invention generally include the steps of providing an aortic diverter carried by an intravascular catheter, introducing the intravascular catheter into the vascular system, advancing the intravascular catheter into the aortic arch to the region of the carotid arteries, and deploying the aortic diverter.

High Output Therapeutic Ultrasound Transducer

US Patent:
6508775, Jan 21, 2003
Filed:
Mar 20, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/813277
Inventors:
John McKenzie - San Carlos CA
Joseph Karratt - Millbrae CA
Assignee:
Pharmasonics, Inc. - Sunnyvale CA
International Classification:
A61M 100

601 2, 604 22, 310334, 310342, 310311, 600156, 600439, 606 41, 606 42, 606169
Abstract:
A therapeutic ultrasound delivery system, comprising: a catheter body; a plurality of axially spaced-apart hollow cylindrical vibrational transducers disposed along a length of the catheter body; a first spring connector wrapped around the outer surfaces of the vibrational transducers, the first spring connector exerting an inward pre-stress on the outer surfaces of the vibrational transducers; and a second connector disposed in contact with the inner surfaces of the vibrational transducers.

Therapeutic Ultrasound Catheter For Delivering A Uniform Energy Dose

US Patent:
6524271, Feb 25, 2003

Abstract:
A method of treating a target region in a body lumen, said method comprising: directing a uniform dose of ultrasonic energy from an interior of the lumen radially outward over a treatment length of the lumen, wherein the dosage of ultrasonic energy received at any one point along the length varies by no more than plus or minus 6 decibels from that received at any other point along the length.

Cerebral Protection During Carotid Endarterectomy And Downstream Vascular Protection During Other Surgeries

US Patent:
6551268, Apr 22, 2003
Filed:
Apr 14, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/550356
Inventors:
Alan L. Kaganov - Portola Valley CA
Jonathan D. Root - San Francisco CA
John McKenzie - San Carlos CA
Assignee:
Embol-X, Inc. - Mountain View CA
International Classification:
A61M 500
US Classification:
604 8, 604200, 604159
Abstract:
A shunt and method of use for maintaining distal blood flow during an arteriotomy procedure is disclosed. The shunt includes a first tubular member having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen therebetween. The proximal end has an opening in communication with the lumen, and the proximal opening is adapted to receive blood from a first region of an artery. The distal end has an opening in communication with the lumen, and the distal opening is adapted to release blood into a second region of the artery. The shunt includes a second tubular member having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen therebetween which either merges and communicates at its distal end with the lumen of the first tubular member, or rides separate and parallel to it. The shunt also includes a hemostatic valve attached to the proximal end of the second tubular member, the valve acting to prevent loss of blood from the lumen of the second tubular member and to permit the introduction of a medical device into the lumen of the second tubular member and into the artery. In use, the distal opening of the shunt is inserted into the second region of an artery and secured to the lumen of the artery.
