A fluid processing device is provided that includes a substrate, a plurality of fluid retainment regions formed in or on the substrate, and a barrier at least partially separating two or more of the fluid retainment regions. A diagnostic device is provided that includes a plurality of retainment regions, with the retainment regions that are separated by at least one dissolvable barrier. The retainment regions can be interconnected through at least one fluid processing passageway. An electrochemical flow cell comprises a substrate having an insulated surface, a polymer gasket integrally disposed on the surface, and a top cover disposed on the gasket. The components define a fluidic channel when assembled. A microfluidic device including at least one microfabricated electrochemical flow cell and method of manufacturing such a device are disclosed herein. Other peripherals may also be included in the microfluidic device of the current invention, including an electrospray ionization (ESI) nozzle, one or more detectors, a chromatographic column, etc. each of which may be microfluidically coupled to the electrochemical flow cells to create more complicated analytic devices.

Abstract:
An enclosure for generating a secondary environment within a processing chamber for coating a substrate. An enclosure wall forms a secondary environment encompassing the coating source, plasma, and the substrate, and separating them from interior of the processing chamber. The enclosure wall includes a plurality of pumping channels for diverting gaseous flow away from the substrate. The channels have an intake of larger diameter from the exhaust opening and are oriented at an angle with the intake opening pointing away from the deposition source. A movable seal enables transport of the substrate in open position and processing the substrate in closed position. The seal may be formed as a labyrinth seal to avoid particle generation from a standard contact seal.
