Abstract:
A method for controlling engine deposits in a direct injection spark ignition gasoline engine which comprises operating the engine with a fuel composition comprising a major amount of hydrocarbons boiling in the gasoline range and an effective deposit-controlling amount of a fuel additive composition comprising: (a) an aromatic ester compound of the formula: or a fuel soluble salt thereof, wherein R is hydroxy, nitro or â(CH ) âNR R , wherein R and R are independently hydrogen or lower alkyl having 1 to 6 carbon atoms and x is 0 or 1; R is hydrogen, hydroxy, nitro or âNR R , wherein R and R are independently hydrogen or lower alkyl having 1 to 6 carbon atoms; R and R are independently hydrogen or lower alkyl having 1 to 6 carbon atoms; and R is a polyalkyl group having an average molecular weight in the range of about 450 to 5,000; and (b) a poly(oxyalkylene) amine having at least one basic nitrogen atom and a sufficient number of oxyalkylene units to render the poly(oxyalkylene) amine soluble in hydrocarbons boiling in the gasoline range.

Abstract:
A fuel additive composition comprising: a) a Mannich condensation product of (1) a high molecular weight alkyl-substituted hydroxyaromatic compound wherein the alkyl group has a number average molecular weight of from about 300 to about 5,000 (2) an amine which contains an amino group having at least one active hydrogen atom, and (3) an aldehyde, wherein the respective molar ratio of reactants (1), (2), and (3) is 1:0. 1-10:0. 1-10; b) a hydrocarbyl-terminated poly(oxyalkylene) monool having an average molecular weight of about 500 to about 5,000, wherein the oxyalkylene group is a C to C oxyalkylene group and the hydrocarbyl group is a C to C hydrocarbyl group; and c) a carboxylic acid as represented by the formula: or anhydride thereof, wherein R represents a hydrocarbyl group having about 2 to about 50 carbon atoms, and x represents an integer of 1 to about 4. The unique fuel additive composition provides excellent control of engine deposits, particularly engine intake system deposits, such as intake valve deposits. The improved performance may be attributable to the improved compatibility of the fuel additive composition of the present invention.

Disclosed are methods for removing engine deposits in a recprocating internal combustion engine by introducing a cleaning composition into an air-intake manifold of a warmed-up and idling reciprocating internal combustion engine and running the engine while the cleaning composition is being introduced. One such cleaning composition suitable for these methods comprises a first solution containing a mixture of: (a) a phenoxy mono- or poly(oxyalkylene) alcohol; (b) at least one solvent selected from (1) an alkoxy mono- or poly(oxyalkylene) alcohol and (2) an aliphatic or aromatic organic solvent; and (c) at least one nitrogen-containing detergent additive; and a second solution containing a mixture of: (d). a phenoxy mono- or poly(oxyalkylene) alcohol; (e) a cyclic carbonate; and (e) water.

The fuel additive compositions of this invention are useful as fuel additives for the prevention and control of engine deposits.
