Novel Polymer Compound And Uses Thereof

US Patent:
2009008, Apr 2, 2009
Filed:
Sep 28, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/864309
Inventors:
Billy Ray BODIFORD - White Oak TX, US
Nadeem A BOKHARI - Troy MI, US
Sanjay Patel - Canton MI, US
International Classification:
C08L 23/06
US Classification:
525240
Abstract:
The present invention is related to novel polyolefin polymer compositions and methods of use thereof, in particular use in passenger and driver airbag cover applications for vehicles, wherein airbag covers are required to perform at extreme temperatures with no failures, brittle or ductile fractures. The polyolefin polymer includes: a first component having at least one polypropylene copolymer or homo propylene polymer present in the range of up to about 70% by weight of the polymer composition; a second component having at least one ethylene/octene copolymer present in the range of up to about 85% by weight of the polymer composition; and optionally, a third component having at least one metallocene elastomer comprising ethylene and a co-monomer. A method of forming an airbag cover from the polyolefin polymer is also described.

Abstract:
A thermoplastic elastomer composition is disclosed comprising about 100 parts by weight of component (A) and about 20 to about 100 parts by weight of component (B). Component (A) is a polypropylene resin comprising about 60 to about 90% by weight of component (i) and about 40 to about 10% by weight of component (ii). Component (i) is a propylene homopolymer or copolymer of propylene and at least one monomer group consisting of ethylene and an α-olefin having 4 or more carbon atoms. Component (ii) is an ethylene-α-olefin copolymer comprising about 20 to about 50% by weight ethylene units. Component (B) is an ethylene-α-olefin elastomer comprising about 60 to about 85% by weight ethylene units and about 40 to about 15% by weight of α-olefin units. Component (B) has a Mooney stress relaxation area of from 180 to 300.

Non-Electrical Methods For Illumination Of Airbag Emblems

US Patent:
2012000, Jan 5, 2012
Filed:
Feb 9, 2009
Appl. No.:
13/148110
Inventors:
Donald J. Paxton - Romeo MI, US
Nadeem Bokhari - Troy MI, US
Raimund Nebel - Obermeitingen, DE
International Classification:
B60R 21/20
B32B 5/16
G09F 3/00
C09K 11/02
B60R 21/16
G09F 13/20
US Classification:
2807283, 2807281, 40542, 4029901, 25230136, 428323
Abstract:
Methods for illuminating (backlighting) an emblem on a steering wheel cover or other indicia within a vehicle include the use of a material that is self-illuminated without electricity. This can involve using self-luminous microspheres or phosphorescent additive materials. Such materials will not be illuminated during the daylight, but when night falls (or other periods of relative darkness), they will illuminate the emblem or other indicia. These materials may be added directly to the plastic that is used to make the emblem.
