Method And Apparatus For Routing Data Information Conveyed In A Facsimile Message

US Patent:
6462832, Oct 8, 2002
Filed:
May 24, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/576276
Inventors:
Naeem Iobal Malik - Fremont CA
Assignee:
Ricoh Company, Ltd. - Tokyo
Ricoh Corporation - San Jose CA
International Classification:
G06K 1500
US Classification:
358 115, 358434
Abstract:
A method and apparatus that provides any type of data information in a facsimile message is configured to accept data information at a source terminal from an external device and send the data information to one or more destination terminals via a facsimile message. In particular, a processor formats the data information in the form of one or more non-standard frames that are conventionally used only to support point to point polling operations for two facsimile devices. The data information is accepted from an external data source and converted by the processor to the one or more NSF frames. A routing feature of the present invention allows the facsimile message containing the data information to one or more destination terminal which are user-selectable at the source terminal.

Method And Apparatus For Establishing Synchronous Fax Communication Through Isdn

US Patent:
6496282, Dec 17, 2002
Filed:
Aug 16, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/374106
Inventors:
Naeem I. Malik - Fremont CA
Assignee:
Ricoh Company, Ltd. - Tokyo
International Classification:
H04N 100
US Classification:
358405, 358406, 358435
Abstract:
A method, and apparatus in an ISDN system form a setup message at a source ISDN terminal where the setup message includes a resource coordination message containing the communication attributes of the source terminal. The ISDN source terminal sends the setup message using a synchronous protocol to an ISDN switch, where the ISDN switch implements a central resource coordination mechanism that extracts the source terminal attribute information. The ISDN switch sends an inquiry message over a D channel to a destination terminal so as to ascertain the communication attributes of the destination terminal, which are reported to the ISDN switch in a reply message. In light of the communication attributes of the source terminal and destination terminal, the ISDN switch and central resource coordination mechanism therein, compares and allocates ISDN communication resources and identifies common attributes. Based on the common attributes, the ISDN allocates a B channel, or at least a portion of a B channel, so that a most efficient, and highest capacity communication link may be established between the source terminal and destination terminal.

Smart Allocation Of Bandwidth For Multiple Independent Calls On A Digital Network

US Patent:
6496504, Dec 17, 2002
Filed:
Aug 6, 1998
Appl. No.:
09/129892
Inventors:
Naeem Iqbal Malik - Fremont CA
Assignee:
Ricoh Company, Ltd. - Tokyo
International Classification:
H04L 1228
US Classification:
370390, 370468, 370524
Abstract:
A method and apparatus in a computer network system form a setup message at a source terminal. The setup message includes a bandwidth coordination message that identifies respective subchannel data rates to be used when sending data to respective destination terminals. The setup message identifies respective data rates and associated destination terminals, and the setup message is sent to a switch facility, that interconnects the source terminal and the respective destination terminals. The switch extracts the bandwidth coordination message and establishes subchannel links, such as subchannels of one or two ISDN B channels. Once the respective links are established, the source terminal transmits a message via the switch to the respective destination terminals at the data rates corresponding with the subchannel data rates established by the switch facility, and as requested by the source terminal.

Inventors:
Naeem I. Malik - Fremont CA
Assignee:
Ricoh Company, Ltd. - Tokyo
International Classification:
H04L 1266
US Classification:

Method And System For Transmitting The Capabilities Of A Facsimile Machine Over The Internet

US Patent:
7103633, Sep 5, 2006
Filed:
Apr 28, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/560566
Inventors:
Naeem I. Malik - Fremont CA, US
Assignee:
Ricoh Company, Ltd. - Tokyo
International Classification:
G06F 15/16
G06F 3/12
H04N 1/00
H04N 1/32
US Classification:
709206, 358 115, 358442, 358402
Abstract:
A method and system for obtaining the capabilities of a facsimile machine. In facsimile transmission systems which utilize a communication medium in which a direct connection does not exist between the transmitting facsimile machine and the receiving facsimile machine, such as the Internet, there is usually not a polling of the capabilities of the receiving facsimile machine by the transmitting facsimile machine during the process of transmitting a communication. There is a communication over the Internet, for example, by way of an Internet electronic mail message, which requests the capabilities of the receiving fax machine. A response e-mail is transmitted so that the capabilities of the receiving facsimile machine are sent to the transmitting facsimile machine. The facsimile machines involved are not necessarily connected directly to the Internet but may be connected through transfer stations. The transfer stations are connected over a network such as the Internet and the electronic mail messages are transmitted between the transfer stations.

Method And System For Forming A Digital Facsimile Message Including A Subaddress

US Patent:
5991290, Nov 23, 1999
Filed:
Jun 3, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/655079
Inventors:
Naeem Iqbal Malik - Fremont CA
Assignee:
Ricoh Company, Ltd. - Tokyo
Ricoh Corporation - San Jose CA
International Classification:
H04M 1100
H04N 100
US Classification:
370352
Abstract:
A method and system for forming a digital facsimile message that includes a subaddress. A source terminal forms a digital facsimile message by using information input by a user in response to prompting inquiries generated by the source terminal. In response to a prompt, a user enters whether the user will enter a subaddress to route the message to a destination terminal. If an affirmative response is received, the source terminal prompts the user to input the subaddress and later to input a telephone number of a destination server which services the destination terminal. The source terminal receives a response from a user indicating whether the subaddress is used for the routing of the digital facsimile message. Based on the input data, the source terminal forms a digital facsimile message that includes the subaddress of the destination terminal. The message may then be sent over a communications channel to the destination server, which then routes the message to the destination terminal.

System For Establishing Optimized Isdn Communication By Identifying Common Communication Attributes Of Destination And Source Terminals Prior To Establishing Communication Link Therebetween

Method And Apparatus For Expanding Data Rate In An Isdn Communication System

US Patent:
6081841, Jun 27, 2000
Filed:
Feb 10, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/021566
Inventors:
Naeem Iqbal Malik - Fremont CA
Assignee:
Ricoh Company, Ltd. - Tokyo
International Classification:
G06F 1516
H04B 7212
H04B 7216
US Classification:
709227
Abstract:
A method and apparatus in an ISDN system form a setup message at a source terminal where the setup message includes a request for two B channels. The source terminal, relays the setup message with the request to a switch, where the switch, invokes a channel coordination mechanism, that recognizes the linkage of the two B channels for communication between the source terminal, and a destination terminal. The switch then determines whether both B channels are available to the destination terminal, and enables the high capacity 128 kbps connection between the source terminal and the destination terminal if in fact the two B channels are available for both the source terminal and the destination terminal.
