Metal Decorating And Aqueous Coating Composition Comprising Copolymer And Aminoplast

US Patent:
3962167, Jun 8, 1976
Filed:
Nov 27, 1974
Appl. No.:
5/527792
Inventors:
Richard Martorano - Marlton NJ
William H. Brendley - Hatboro PA
Thomas H. Haag - Feasterville PA
Assignee:
Rohm and Haas Company - Philadelphia PA
International Classification:
C08L 6120
US Classification:
260 294UA
Abstract:
Aqueous resinous compositions having an alkaline pH for application to metal sheets and curing the same prior to shaping the metals to achieve metal decoration are disclosed. By "decorating" is meant applying synthetic resinous coatings to the metal followed by a severe mechanical forming operation such as the formation of screw-threaded bottle caps. The composition is thermosettable and comprises (A) an addition copolymer of certain monomers and (B) a water-soluble urea-formaldehyde reaction product or a water-soluble methanol or ethanol ether thereof. The copolymer contains small amounts of carboxyl and amide and/or hydroxyl functionality. The weight ratio of (A) to (B) is from 35:65 to 65:35, and the solids content is between 40 and 80 percent. The coating composition has properties which similar previously known aqueous compositions lack, an important one being that the composition may be direct-roller coated onto the substrate without fouling the coating roller with a partially dried accumulation of the coating composition. The coated panels having a wet coating may be placed directly into the curing oven without blistering, avoiding the necessity of a preliminary low temperature drying step and freedom from patterning.

Pigment Dispersions And Lacquers Containing Copolymer Of Isobornyl Methacrylate

US Patent:
3940353, Feb 24, 1976
Filed:
May 8, 1974
Appl. No.:
5/468942
Inventors:
Richard Martorano - Marlton NJ
Assignee:
Rohm and Haas Company - Philadelphia PA
International Classification:
C09D 348
C09D 366
C09D 381
US Classification:
260 22CB
Abstract:
Low molecular weight copolymers (1) acrylic acid esters or methacrylic acid esters of alcohols such as methanol with (2) esters of bicyclic alcohols such as isobornyl alcohol and unsaturated acids such as methacrylic acid, as contrasted with high molecular weight copolymers of such monomers (1) and (2) (see U. S. Pat. No. 3,485,775) and as contrasted to other acrylic polymers, are found to be exceptional in compatibility with practically all types of polyesters and alkyds and with many other types of lacquer film-forming materials. The modifiers, particulary for alkyds, need not be selected on the basis of the oil length or solvent (aromatic or aliphatic), the modifiers being compatible with long oil alkyds, medium oil alkyds, and short oil alkyds. When small amounts of unsaturated amine-containing monomers or unsaturated carboxylic acids, or other polar monomers and combinations thereof, are incorporated in the polymer solutions, they become improved pigment dispersants. Such pigment dispersions, unexpectedly, can be let down with many types of synthetic resins and used by air-drying or baking the coated articles.

Coating Method Using Compositions Comprising Acrylic Oligomers, High Polymers And Crosslinkers

US Patent:
4190693, Feb 26, 1980
Filed:
May 15, 1978
Appl. No.:

Richard Martorano - Marlton NJ
William H. Brendley - Hatboro PA
Assignee:
Rohm and Haas Company - Philadelphia PA
International Classification:
B32B 1508
B05D 128
US Classification:
428209
Abstract:

Aqueous Coating Compositions Comprising Acrylic Oligomers And High Molecular Weight Polymers

US Patent:
4087397, May 2, 1978
Filed:
Feb 10, 1976
Appl. No.:
5/656928
Inventors:
Richard Martorano - Marlton NJ
William H. Brendley - Hatboro PA
Assignee:
Rohm and Haas Company - Philadelphia PA
International Classification:
C08L 3304
US Classification:
260 296WB
Abstract:
This invention discloses a polymer composition for the coating of substrates, comprising an aqueous alkaline blend having a binder consisting essentially of two components. Component A) is an addition copolymer of (1) about 3% to about 30% by weight of an olefinically unsaturated monomer containing a carboxyl group or mixture thereof, (2) at least one ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid, and, optionally, (3) other olefinically unsaturated monomers, the total of (1), (2) and (3) being 100%. The weight average molecular weight of the copolymer is between 10,000 and 500,000, and it is in the form of a solution or a colloidal solution in an aqueous phase. Component B) is an oligomeric addition copolymer of (1) at least one ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid, (2) 9% to about 50% of an olefinically unsaturated monomer having at least one carboxyl group, and, optionally, (3) other olefinically unsaturated monomers, the total of (1), (2) and (3) being 100%. The weight average molecular weight of this copolymer is between 400 and 6,000, and the molecular weight distribution is such that the heterogeneity index is 3 or less. In the blend, on a solids basis, (A) is from 90 to 10 percent and (B) being from 10 to 90 percent by weight.
