Highly Accurate Three-Dimensional Surface Digitizing System And Methods

US Patent:
6052190, Apr 18, 2000
Filed:
Sep 9, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/925628
Inventors:
Marek Sekowski - Tarzana CA
Thomas Summers - Los Lunas NM
James M. Hardy - Albuquerque NM
Assignee:
Utoptics, Inc. - Tarzana CA
International Classification:
G01B 1124
US Classification:
356376
Abstract:
A distance-measuring system includes a light source for transmitting a beam of light to a target, thereby generating a received beam. A calibration unit periodically calibrates the system by positioning a calibration target between the light source and the target so that the transmitted beam is interrupted, thereby generating a received calibration beam. The calibration unit also generates a calibration signal which is indicative of when the calibration target is generating the received calibration beam. A target sensor receives the reflected target and calibration beams and provides a target signal indicative of the reflected target and calibration beams. A reference sensor receives light from the light source and provides a reference signal to the processing circuitry. Processing circuitry receives the calibration, target, and reference signals and calculates the distance to the target based upon the target and reference signals and/or calibrates the system based upon the calibration signal. The processing circuitry may provide data based upon the calibration and target signals to a computer for distance calculations and calibration.

Bounceless Seismic Wave Generator

US Patent:
4124090, Nov 7, 1978
Filed:
Apr 7, 1977
Appl. No.:
5/785498
Inventors:
Charles B. Reynolds - Albuquerque NM
Thomas O. Summers - Albuquerque NM
Assignee:
Charles B. Reynolds & Associates - Albuquerque NM
International Classification:
G01V 104
US Classification:
181121
Abstract:
A seismic wave generator constructed of fungible high density elements contained within a flexible envelope is dropped to impact upon the ground and generate seismic waves for seismic investigations. The non-rigid construction minimizes or eliminates bounce or reverberation after impact. Because of the lack of bounce and reverberation, recordings of the seismic waves produced are relatively free of superimposed wave forms otherwise resulting from multiple impacts.

Clutch And Control Mechanism For Fifth Wheel

US Patent:
5503421, Apr 2, 1996
Filed:
Jul 6, 1993
Appl. No.:
8/089471
Inventors:
Chrys O. DeLisser - El Paso TX
Thomas O. Summers - Albuquerque NM
International Classification:
B62D 5306
US Classification:
2804411
Abstract:
A rotatable fifth wheel mechanism for use on converter dollies, truck tractors, and permanently attached dollies. The mechanism includes: a fifth wheel supported on a frame for rotation about a vertical axis; and a clutch secured between the fifth wheel and the frame, to control rotation of the fifth wheel relative to the frame. The clutch includes a drum secured to the fifth wheel, friction pad completely surrounding the drum and an inflatable bladder for applying pressure to the friction pad. The fifth wheel mechanism also includes apparatus for increasing or decreasing the pressure in the bladder to selectively vary the engagement force between the drum and friction pads. The apparatus for selectively increasing or decreasing pressure includes at least a pair of electrically operated air valves. The fifth wheel includes at least one spring biased key (coupled to an automatic sensing device) which, when the fifth wheel is in proper alignment with the fifth wheel plate on a semi-trailer, engages with a mating slot in the fifth wheel plate. An electronic control package is also disclosed which includes apparatus for initiating a command, apparatus for encoding the command, apparatus for decoding the command and apparatus for implementing the command.
