Abstract:
A method for producing polysiloxane compositions, including an amphoteric class of organosilicone compositions, is provided. The polysiloxane compositions are characterized as having the formula: wherein: R , which can be the same or different, is selected from R , an amine or diamine containing group of the formula âF âB 3âFâNH , âOR , and at least one pyrrolidone-containing functional carboxyl group of the general formula: wherein R is hydrogen, lower alkyl (C ) or alkali metal; F is linear or branched alkylene; F is linear or branched alkylene of 1-10 carbon atoms; n is 0 or 1, B is âNR , wherein R is hydrogen or lower alkyl (C ); R is hydrogen or lower alkyl (C ), R can be the same or different and is selected from alkyl, aryl or olefinic; R and R , which may be the same or different are selected from alkyl, aryl, capped or uncapped polyoxyalkylene, alkaryl, aralkylene or alkenyl; a is an integer from 0 to 50,000; and b is an integer from 0 to 100.

The properties of polymeric compositions can be improved by the presence of a polysiloxane unit of formula ##STR1## where Q is a substituted or unsubstituted aromatic group, Z is ##STR2## D is unsubstituted or substituted hydrocarbylene R. sup. 1, R. sup. 2, R. sup. 3, R. sup. 4, R. sup. 5 and R. sup. 6 each, independently, is unsubstituted or substituted hydrocarbyl. x, y and z each independently has a value from 0 to 100. Polyimides containing these units display improved solubility and adhesion; they are useful, among other things, as protective coatings.
