Method And Apparatus For Performing Swap Analysis

US Patent:
6671774, Dec 30, 2003
Filed:
Mar 26, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/817328
Inventors:
Tao Kai Lam - Boston MA
Orit Levin Michael - Newton MA
Adnan Sahin - Brookline MA
Assignee:
EMC Corporation - Hopkinton MA
International Classification:
B06F 1200
US Classification:
711112, 711170, 710 8, 710 15, 710104, 709104
Abstract:
Described are techniques used in connection with determining one or more pairs of logical volumes (LVs) to increase the performance of storage devices by swapping these LVs. Future performance of the anticipated potential LV swap is determined in accordance with past performance data collected prior to actually performing the swap. Data is gathered for a first arrangement of data storage devices for a period of time. A proposed modification to the first arrangement, such as swapping LVs of data on one or more storage devices, is produced. A performance estimation is produced using past performance data for the one or more pairs of proposed LV swap candidates. The search for pairs of LV candidates is determined using an iterative technique in which earlier iterations attempt to produce candidates from a smaller, more focused pool of possible LVs. The pool of LVs is expanded upon subsequent iterations if earlier iterations using heuristics providing for a more focused search are unsuccessful.

Filed:
May 9, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/124776
Inventors:
Igor Patlashenko - Brookline MA, US
Adnan Sahin - Brookline MA, US
Assignee:
EMC Corporation - Hopkinton MA
International Classification:
G06F 11/30
G21C 17/00
US Classification:
702183
Abstract:
The present invention provides a system, method, and program product for understanding, analyzing and troubleshooting performance issues in a data storage environment. More specifically, this invention is a system and method for preparing a trace of workload data for analysis by splitting information related to components on which the workload is experienced and by information type.

Disk Queue Management For Quality Of Service

US Patent:
7281086, Oct 9, 2007
Filed:
Jun 2, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/143813
Inventors:
Sachin Suresh More - Westborough MA, US
Yechiel Yochai - Lincoln RI, US
Amnon Naamad - Brookline MA, US
Adnan Sahin - Brookline MA, US
Assignee:
EMC Corporation - Hopkinton MA
International Classification:
G06F 12/00
US Classification:
711112, 711151, 711154, 711158, 711169, 710 39, 710 40, 710 54
Abstract:
A mixed queue method for managing storage requests directed includes a low-priority request queue on which all low-priority requests are placed and where they are subject to throughput optimization by re-ordering. When a high-priority request limit has not been reached, high-priority requests are placed on a high-priority request queue where they are executed in a pre-emptive manner with respect to the queued low-priority requests, thus experiencing reduced access time. When the high-priority request limit has been reached, the high-priority requests are placed on the low-priority request queue, such that the high-priority requests are included in the throughput optimization along with the low-priority requests on the request queue. Starvation of the low-priority requests is avoided, and the overall throughput of the disk drive is maintained at a relatively high level. The high-priority request limit can be realized in several ways, such as by monitoring the number of outstanding high-priority requests or the rate at which high-priority requests are issued to the disk drive.

Appl. No.:
11/771561
Inventors:
Sachin More - Westborough MA, US
Adnan Sahin - Brookline MA, US
Preston Crow - Ashland MA, US
Adi Ofer - Framingham MA, US
Assignee:
EMC Corporation - Hopkinton MA
International Classification:
G06F 1/00
G06F 1/32
US Classification:
713300, 713320, 713323, 713324, 713330, 711100, 711151, 711158
Abstract:
Described is a storage system and method for reducing power consumption in a storage system by shortening seek distances associated with input/output (I/O) requests to a physical disk drive. A sweep direction is set. An offset of a new I/O request is evaluated to determine whether to send the new I/O request to the physical disk drive. The new I/O request is sent to the physical disk drive if the offset is consistent with the sweep direction. Otherwise, sending the new I/O request to the disk drive is deferred until the sweep direction is set to a reverse direction.
