Exhaust Gas Recirculation System And Method Of Operating Such System

US Patent:
2010019, Aug 12, 2010
Filed:
Feb 6, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/366687
Inventors:
Cory A. Brown - Peoria IL, US
Mary Lou Kesse - Peoria IL, US
Adwait V. Joshi - Peoria IL, US
Assignee:
Caterpillar Inc. - Peoria IL
International Classification:
F02D 43/00
US Classification:
123672, 12356816
Abstract:
An exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system for an engine and a method of operating that system is disclosed. The system has a conduit arrangement for conducting exhaust gas from an exhaust side of the engine to an intake side of the engine, a valve arrangement configured for controlling the amount of exhaust gas to be recirculated and a conduit arrangement for providing intake air to the intake side of the engine. A sensor arrangement is provided and is configured to sense at least one parameter indicative of the humidity of the recirculated exhaust gas and the intake air at the intake side of the engine. A control arrangement is configured to receive a signal from the first sensor arrangement and further is configured to control the valve arrangement in response to a determination by the control arrangement that the first parameter is outside a desired range for low-NOemission during a subsequent combustion period.

Control System For Engine With Exhaust Gas Recirculation

US Patent:
2013000, Jan 10, 2013
Filed:
Jul 6, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/177264
Inventors:
Rammohan Sankar - Dunlap IL, US
Ben Nash - Peoria IL, US
Keith Troisi - Washington IL, US
Travis Barnes - Metamora IL, US
Christopher Smith - Washington IL, US
Gregory Armstrong - Edwards IL, US
Adwait Joshi - Dunlap IL, US
Aaron Luft - Frankfort IN, US
Assignee:
CATERPILLAR INC. - Peoria IL
International Classification:
F02M 25/07
F02B 37/00
F02B 47/08
US Classification:
12356812, 12356816, 606052
Abstract:
An internal combustion engine includes an exhaust restriction valve and an exhaust gas recirculation control valve. Upon determining that a malfunction or fault condition exists relative to one of the valves, the controller may command the other valve to move towards a predetermined position. A malfunction or fault condition may result in derating of the engine.

Combustion Bowl Of A Piston For An Engine

US Patent:
2018010, Apr 12, 2018
Filed:
Oct 11, 2016
Appl. No.:
15/290564
Inventors:
- Peoria IL, US
Adwait Vilas Joshi - Dunlap IL, US
David Andrew Pierpont - Dunlap IL, US
Kalyana Chakravarthy Vutukuri - Dunlap IL, US
Assignee:
Caterpillar Inc. - Peoria IL
International Classification:
F02F 3/26
F02F 1/24
Abstract:
A piston for an engine may include a piston body. The piston body may include a piston crown disposed symmetrically about a central longitudinal axis of the piston. A combustion bowl may be recessed into the piston body and may be offset axially inwardly with respect to the piston crown. A central bowl apex may protrude axially from the combustion bowl and may be offset axially inwardly with respect to the piston crown. A first bowl apex may protrude axially from the combustion bowl and may be disposed radially inwardly with respect to the piston crown. A second bowl apex may protrude axially from the combustion bowl and may be disposed radially inwardly with respect to the first bowl apex and may be radially between the first bowl apex and the central bowl apex. The second bowl apex may be offset axially inwardly with respect to the central bowl apex.

Method For Calculating Exhaust Temperature

US Patent:
2016028, Sep 29, 2016
Filed:
Mar 27, 2015
Appl. No.:
14/670936
Inventors:
- Peoria IL, US
David Pierpont - Dunlap IL, US
Adwait Joshi - Dunlap IL, US
Assignee:
Caterpillar Inc. - Peoria IL
International Classification:
F01N 11/00
G01M 15/10
F01N 9/00
Abstract:
A method for calculating exhaust gas temperature indirectly at points in or around an engine exhaust after treatment system for use in determining an amount of unburned hydrocarbons resident therein at a given point in time.

Catalyst Protection Against Hydrocarbon Exposure

US Patent:
2016008, Mar 24, 2016
Filed:
Sep 22, 2014
Appl. No.:
14/492694
Inventors:
- Peoria IL, US
Joshua Ratts - East Peoria IL, US
Wilce Williams - Peoria IL, US
Adwait Joshi - Dunlap IL, US
Brandon Abel - Peoria IL, US
Assignee:
Caterpillar Inc. - Peoria IL
International Classification:
F01N 9/00
F01N 3/20
Abstract:
A system to protect an after treatment system from the effects of hydrocarbon accumulation on a catalyst. An engine system microprocessor using software estimates the amount of hydrocarbon accumulation on the after treatment system based on engine system parameters and other parameters. The accumulated hydrocarbons can cause an exothermic event if the catalyst temperature is allowed to ramp up too quickly. Similarly, accumulated hydrocarbon can temporarily reduce after treatment system performance. In the case of SCR, the microprocessor can control a reductant injector to modulate the amount of reductant being injected into the after treatment system to control the amount of ammonia slip. Alternatively or in addition to, the microprocessor can communicate with proper electronic control modules to modulate the engine system parameters such as engine speed, fuel, and back pressure to control engine exhaust flow temperature during operation of the engine system.

Method And System For Operating An Engine

US Patent:
2016006, Mar 3, 2016
Filed:
Aug 27, 2014
Appl. No.:
14/469618
Inventors:
- Peoria IL, US
Adwait V. Joshi - Dunlap IL, US
Matthew Mowers - Peoria IL, US
Brandon Abel - Peoria IL, US
Deepti Bhosekar - Dunlap IL, US
Karthik Jayasankaran - Peoria IL, US
Assignee:
Caterpillar Inc. - Peoria IL
International Classification:
F02D 41/14
F01N 3/18
F02D 41/02
Abstract:
An engine control system including an engine configured to generate exhaust comprising an exhaust constituent and to operate in a first operating mode or a second operating mode different from the first operating mode. The engine control system can include a plurality of sensors configured to generate temperature data corresponding to at least one of a measured exhaust temperature and an ambient temperature, and exhaust constituent data corresponding to an exhaust constituent concentration. The engine control system can include a controller operatively coupled to the plurality of sensors and the engine, and configured to receive the temperature data and the exhaust constituent data from the plurality of sensors, and change an operating state of the engine from the first operating mode to the second operating mode when the temperature data is less than a predetermined temperature threshold and the exhaust constituent data is greater than a predetermined exhaust constituent threshold.
