Abstract:
A planar ion-exchanged glass sheet for out-of-plane light beam coupling includes a first surface, a ion-exchanged first glass region adjacent and parallel to the first surface, a core glass region adjacent and parallel to the first glass region, a ion-exchanged second glass region adjacent and parallel to the core glass region, and a second surface adjacent and parallel to the second glass region. One edge of the glass sheet has an angled end face that is inclined to the plane extends across a thickness of at least one of the glass regions. Methods of making the planar ion-exchanged glass sheet, coupling an out-of-plane light beam into a plane using the planar ion-exchanged glass sheet, and scattering the coupled light to illuminate at least select regions of an exposed surface of the glass sheet are also disclosed.

Abstract:
A glass-ceramic article includes from 60 mol % to 72 mol % SiO2; from 2.5 mol % to 8 mol % AlO; from 17 mol % to 26 mol % LiO; from 0.2 mol % to 4 mol % ZrO; and from 0.5 mol % to 2 mol % PO. The sum of alkaline earth oxides and transitional metal oxides in the glass-ceramic article may be from 0.1 mol % to 6 mol %, wherein alkaline earth oxides is the sum of CaO, MgO, SrO, and BaO and transition metal oxides is the sum of LaO, YO, TaO, and GeO. The sum of POand ZrOin the glass-ceramic article may be from 1 mol % to 6 mol %. The glass-ceramic article may comprise a crystalline phase comprising lithium disilicate and petalite. The total amount of lithium disilicate and petalite in the crystalline phase of the glass-ceramic article may be greater than 50 wt %, based on a total weight of the crystalline phase.

Abstract:
A glass-ceramic article comprises: a center-volume composition comprising (on an oxide basis): 55-75 mol % SiO; 0.2-10 mol % AlO; 0-5 mol % BO; 15-30 mol % LiO; 0-2 mol % NaO; 0-2 mol % KO; 0-5 mol % MgO; 0-2 mol % ZnO; 0.2-3.0 mol % PO; 0.1-10 mol % ZrO; 0-4 mol % TiO; and 0-1.0 mol % SnO. Lithium disilicate and either β-spodumene or β-quartz are the two predominant crystalline phases (by weight) of the glass-ceramic article. The glass-ceramic article further comprises tetragonal ZrOas a crystalline phase. The composition of the glass-ceramic article from a primary surface into a thickness of the glass-ceramic article can comprise over 10 mol % NaO (on an oxide basis), with the mole percentage of NaO decreasing from the primary surface towards the center-volume. The glass-ceramic article exhibits a ring-on-ring load-to-failure of at least 120 kgf, when the thickness of the glass-ceramic article is 0.3 mm to 2.0 mm.

Abstract:
A black β-spodumene lithium disilicate glass ceramic is provided. The glass ceramic includes at least one of magnetite, β-quartz, cristobalite, and lithium phosphate as a minor crystal phase. The glass ceramic is characterized by the color coordinates: L*: 15.0 to 35.0, a*: −3.0 to 3.0, and b*: −5.0 to 5.0. The glass ceramic may be ion exchanged. Methods for producing the glass ceramic are also provided.
