A collapsible bicycle carrier has a base that is configured to fit a trailer hitch receiver on a motor vehicle. An upright frame is operatively connected to the base. A T-shaped member having a vertical upright body and a horizontal crossbar is connected to the frame. A substantially U-shaped carrying assembly having a pair of carrying arms at an open end thereof is pivotally mounted to the crossbar. A slide having a tab is slidably received on the upright body. A bracket is rotatably mounted at its ends to the tab and a closed end of the carrying assembly. A lock is provided on the slide for locking the slide in first and second positions. The carrying arms are in an extended carrying position when the slide is locked in the first position and in a collapsed position when the slide is locked in the second position.

Compact Folding Bicycle Carrier For Motor Vehicles

US Patent:
8636184, Jan 28, 2014
Filed:
Oct 15, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/925225
Inventors:
Richard A. Allen - Concord MA, US
Alexander R. Allen - Vero Beach FL, US
International Classification:
B60R 9/00
B60R 11/00
B60R 9/04
US Classification:
224497, 224521, 224523, 224532, 224314
Abstract:
A compact folding bicycle carrier has a frame, a folding lower foot member and a pair of folding articulated upper carrying members. The lower foot member is pivotally mounted to a lower end of the frame and constrained for limited movement relative thereto. Each articulated carrying member has a supporting arm and a carrying arm. One end of each supporting arm is pivotally mounted to an upper end of the frame at opposite sides thereof. Each carrying arm is associated with one supporting arm. Each carrying arm has a cradle for holding a bicycle adjacent one end and an upper foot at the other end. Each carrying arm, between the cradle and the upper foot, is pivotally mounted to its respective supporting arm. The supporting arms are constrained for limited movement relative to the frame and each carrying arm is constrained for limited movement relative to its respective supporting arm.

Loop Strap Tensioning System

US Patent:
5456398, Oct 10, 1995
Filed:
Oct 5, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/318223
Inventors:
Alexander R. Allen - Concord MA
International Classification:
B60R 910
US Classification:
224329
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for carrying one or more bicycles on a motor vehicle and a securing system for securing the carrier to the motor vehicle. The securing system includes a stretchable and contractible resilient web whose ends are attached to form a loop. A buckle is held within the loop and a strap is threaded through the buckle. The web, which is stretched by tightening the strap, maintains tension in the securing system. When tightened, adjacent surfaces of the loop and the web are in close juxtaposition. Separation between adjacent surfaces of the resilient web and the portion of the strap that forms the loop, provides a visual indication of the degree of tension in the securing system.

Strap Tensioning System

US Patent:
5331722, Jul 26, 1994
Filed:
Aug 25, 1992
Appl. No.:
7/934913
Inventors:
Alexander R. Allen - Concord MA
Richard A. Allen - Concord MA
Christopher B. Allen - Concord MA
International Classification:
A44B 2100
US Classification:
24 68CD
Abstract:
A method and apparatus involving a mounting system for securing a carrier for carrying one or more bicycles on a motor vehicle. The mounting system, which is connected to both the motor vehicle and the carrier, includes a strap and a tensioning assembly that is connected intermediate the ends of the strap. In one embodiment, the tension assembly includes a frame, a slidable member and a compression spring that is positioned between the frame and slidable member. In another embodiment, the tension assembly includes a frame, a slidable member and a tension spring that is positioned between the frame and the slidable member. As the strap is tightened for securing the carrier to the motor vehicle, the tension assembly maintains the strap in tension when the strap would otherwise become slack due to jarring of the carrier.

Strap Tensioning System

US Patent:
5611119, Mar 18, 1997
Filed:
Jun 7, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/477465
Inventors:
Alexander R. Allen - Concord MA
International Classification:
B60R 900
US Classification:
24301
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for carrying one or more bicycles on a motor vehicle and a strap for securing the carrier to the motor vehicle. The strap includes a stretchable and contractible resilient web that is connected intermediate the ends of the strap. A loop is formed in the strap when the strap is not tightened. The web is stretched by tightening and serves to maintain tension in the strap. When tightened, adjacent surfaces of that portion of the strap forming the loop and the web are in close juxtaposition. Separation between adjacent surfaces of the resilient web and the portion of the strap that forms the loop, provides a visual indication of the degree of strap tension.

Folding Carrier And Securing System Therefor

US Patent:
5598960, Feb 4, 1997
Filed:
Jun 7, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/476668
Inventors:
Richard A. Allen - Concord MA
Christopher B. Allen - Concord MA
Alexander R. Allen - Concord MA
International Classification:
B60R 910
US Classification:
224324
Abstract:
A foldable carrier that is mountable upon a vehicle includes rotatably connected frame, carrying, and supporting members. The carrying member is constrained for limited rotational movement relative to the frame between a carrying position and a stored position. A locking element, including a latch means and an arm means, positively locks the carrying member in its extended operational position, thus preventing collapse of the carrier after it is in use. Bicycles and other items are secured to the carrier using a tie-down system including either strap securing elements positioned on the ends of the carrying members arms or a series of mounting elements slidably positioned on the arms of the carrying member.
