Mode-Locked Laser Using A Mode-Locking Wavelength Selective Reflector

US Patent:
7317739, Jan 8, 2008
Filed:
Mar 17, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/390379
Inventors:
Stephen Y. Chou - Princeton NJ, US
Shufeng Bai - Princeton NJ, US
Allan Chang - Princeton NJ, US
Hua Tan - Princeton NJ, US
Jian Jim Wang - Orefield PA, US
Assignee:
Princeton University - Princeton NJ
International Classification:
H01S 3/098
H01S 3/08
US Classification:
372 18, 372 92, 372102
Abstract:
In accordance with the invention, a mode-locked laser comprises an optical gain medium disposed within an optical cavity formed by a first reflector and a wavelength selective second reflector to achieve mode-locking operation. Advantageously, the wavelength reflective reflector is a two-dimensional subwavelength resonant grating. The resulting laser is compact, tunable, reliable and inexpensive. It provides high side mode suppression and high output power.

Method Of Making Subwavelength Resonant Grating Filter

US Patent:
2004012, Jun 24, 2004
Filed:
Sep 30, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/674607
Inventors:
Stephen Chou - Princeton NJ, US
Allan Chang - Princeton NJ, US
Hua Tan - Plainsboro NJ, US
Jim Wang - Orefield PA, US
Wei Wu - Mountain View CA, US
Rich Yu - Levittown PA, US
International Classification:
G02B006/34
US Classification:
385/037000, 385/129000
Abstract:
In accordance with the invention, a SRG filter is fabricated by disposing a moldable layer on the unpatterned grating layer, pressing a patterned molding surface into the moldable layer to produce an appropriate pattern of reduced thickness regions, removing material from the reduced thickness regions to expose the grating layer and processing the exposed grating layer to form a grating array. In a preferred embodiment the grating layer is adjacent a planar waveguiding layer overlying a substrate and the moldable material is a polymer resist. The waveguide layer advantageously has a refractive index greater than both the grating layer and the underlying substrate. And the pattern can be a one or two-dimensional array of grating elements.

Tunable Subwavelength Resonant Grating Filter

US Patent:
2005023, Oct 27, 2005
Filed:
Sep 30, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/674608
Inventors:
Stephen Chou - Princeton NJ, US
Allan Chang - Princeton NJ, US
Hua Tan - Plainsboro NJ, US
Jim Wang - Orefield PA, US
Wei Wu - Mountain View CA, US
Rich Yu - Levittown PA, US
International Classification:
G02F001/13
US Classification:
349198000
Abstract:
In accordance with the invention, a tunable subwavelength resonant grating filter comprises a liquid crystal cell having a pair of major surface walls. One wall of the cell is a coated subwavelength grating of a SRGF. The coating comprises a polymer layer to fill the grating trenches and a surfactant layer to facilitate uniform alignment of the liquid crystal material. The refractive index of the LCD material in the cell can then be electrically or thermally adjusted to tune the resonant wavelength.

Integrated Audio And Video Agent System In An Automatic Call Distribution Environment

US Patent:
6404747, Jun 11, 2002
Filed:
Jun 2, 1998
Appl. No.:
09/088640
Inventors:
Alfred E. Berry - Freehold NJ
Allan M. Chang - Middletown NJ
Rich Hamm - Spotswood NJ
Rick Maiden - Littleton CO
Sandra Milstead - Clarksburg NJ
John Mitchell - Matawan NJ
Bajinder Singh - Marlboro NJ
Assignee:
Avaya Technology Corp. - Basking Ridge NJ
International Classification:
H04L 1216
US Classification:
370270, 379203, 379265
Abstract:
A Video Multimedia Call Center (VMMCC) with multipoint access through a PBX (private branch exchange, also known as a switchboard) within an ACD (automatic call distribution) environment has both audio and video capabilities. The VMMCC extends traditional call center capabilities into the video and collaborative data domain. An organization using the VMMCC is able to provide a more personal and feature rich interface for both their customer service representatives and their end customers. Call center agents are able to communicate visually with customers at any location where the organization supports an endpoint. The agent and the customer have the added benefit of sharing data applications which provides the customer with a level of empowerment and understanding of the organizations operation that cannot be appreciated over a standard audio interface. Customers are able to see how their information is truly being represented by the agent. More complex transactions such as mortgage/loan origination interviews, customer help lines, and others are easier for the customer to understand with the ability to see the information unfolding.
