Multi-Step Circular Horn System

US Patent:
6384795, May 7, 2002
Filed:
Sep 21, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/666203
Inventors:
Arun K. Bhattacharyya - El Segundo CA
Guy Goyette - Marina del Rey CA
Assignee:
Hughes Electronics Corp. - El Segundo CA
International Classification:
H01Q 1300
US Classification:
343786, 343772
Abstract:
A multi-step circular horn system may have several steps and may use more than one flared section based upon design considerations. In order to achieve high aperture efficiency, the aperture field distribution is close to uniform. For good cross-polar performance, the field distribution is circularly symmetric. Location and shape of the steps is determined by the wavelength of the signal being transmitted and the space constraints imposed by the antenna design. The step discontinuities generate desired modes of operation in the right proportion.

Dual Hybrid-Fed Patch Element For Dual Band Circular Polarization Radiation

US Patent:
6424299, Jul 23, 2002
Filed:
Aug 9, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/925773
Inventors:
Alan Cha - Glendale CA
Arun Bhattacharyya - El Segundo CA
Assignee:
The Boeing Company - Chicago IL
International Classification:
H01Q 138
US Classification:
343700MS, 343846
Abstract:
A dual-band patch antenna element ( ) for circular or linear polarization. The patch element ( ) is excited by two different hybrids ( ), designed for transmit and receive bands respectively. Each hybrid ( ) electromagnetically couples a pair of orthogonal ground plane slots ( ) that excite the patch antenna ( ). The hybrid ( ) and slot ( ) dimensions for the transmit band are different from the hybrid ( ) and slot ( ) dimensions for the receive band. Isolation can be improved by connecting shunt stubs ( ) to the hybrids ( ).

Multi-Mode Square Horn With Cavity-Suppressed Higher-Order Modes

US Patent:
6535174, Mar 18, 2003
Filed:
Dec 20, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/467637
Inventors:
Sudhakar Rao - Torrance CA
Arun Bhattacharyya - El Segundo CA
Assignee:
Hughes Electronics Corporation - El Segundo CA
International Classification:
H01Q 1300
US Classification:
343786, 343772
Abstract:
An antenna apparatus that has an increased efficiency, and a method for increasing the efficiency of multi-mode antenna feed horns, is disclosed. The method comprises the steps of exciting, within the antenna, a desired transmission mode and an undesired transmission mode of the signal to be transmitted, and converting, within the antenna, power within the undesired transmission mode into power for the desired transmission mode of the signal to be transmitted. An antenna apparatus in accordance with the present invention comprises a feed horn having an input opening, an aperture, and a cavity, disposed between the input opening and the aperture, for suppressing an undesired transmission mode of the antenna and exciting a desired transmission mode of the antenna.

Four-Port Patch Antenna

US Patent:
6549166, Apr 15, 2003
Filed:
Aug 22, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/935471
Inventors:
Arun Bhattacharyya - El Segundo CA
Alan Cha - Glendale CA
James McKay - Manhattan Beach CA
Assignee:
The Boeing Company - Seattle WA
International Classification:
H01Q 138
US Classification:
343700MS, 343846
Abstract:
A patch antenna is disclosed having four ports for circular polarization that suppress the TM-02 mode, resulting in a radiation pattern that is symmetric. The axial ratio performance is consequently superior to that of two-port patch antennas. A four-port patch antenna includes a patch made of an electrically conductive material, a patch substrate coupled to the patch wherein the patch substrate is made of a dielectric material, a ground plane coupled to the patch substrate wherein the ground plane is made of an electrically conductive material having at least four slots formed therein, a feed substrate coupled to the ground plane wherein the feed substrate is made of a dielectric material, and a hybrid network coupled to the feed substrate that includes a right hand circularly polarized port, a left hand circularly polarized port, and two matched terminated ports.

High Radiation Efficient Dual Band Feed Horn
