Method For Preserving Charges On A Cap At The Output Of A Regulator

US Patent:
6441681, Aug 27, 2002
Filed:
Jun 7, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/876449
Inventors:
Bertram J. White - Irvine CA
Tanchu Shih - Irvine CA
Assignee:
Texas Instruments Incorporated - Dallas TX
International Classification:
G05F 302
US Classification:

Abstract:
The present invention includes a circuit to maintain a constant voltage on a storage element such as a capacitor at the output of a regulator during an emergency power condition. It includes a detector to detect the emergency condition and to generate a fault signal in response to the emergency condition, a one-shot time delay circuit to delay the enabling of a regulator in response to the fault signal, and a second delay unit to delay the enabling of the load of a regulator to accommodate the non-zero recovery time of a regulator. These two time delay units are able to bypass the noisy switching on the fault signal so that the maintained voltage on the storage capacitor will not droop and can be reliably used for such purposes as head retract and spindle brake under a noisy power emergency situation.

Integrated Circuit Phoneme-Based Speech Synthesizer

US Patent:
4433210, Feb 21, 1984
Filed:
Apr 19, 1982
Appl. No.:
6/369356
Inventors:
Carl L. Ostrowski - Mt. Clemens MI
Bertram White - Tustin CA
Assignee:
Federal Screw Works - Detroit MI
International Classification:
G10L 100
US Classification:
381 53
Abstract:
A phoneme-based speech synthesizer that is particularly adapted for implementation on a single integrated circuit chip. The vocal tract is comprised of a fixed resonant filter and a plurality of tunable resonant filters whose resonant frequencies are controlled in accordance with the values of certain control parameters. The vocal tract is implemented utilizing a capacitive switching technique which eliminates the need for large valued components to achieve the relatively low frequencies of human speech. In addition, a novel digital transition circuit is included which gradually transitions the values of the vocal tract control parameters as they change from phoneme to phoneme. A unique glottal source generator is also disclosed which is adapted to digitally generate a glottal pulse signal in a manner which readily permits the glottal pulse to be spectrally shaped in any desired configuration.

Adaptive Commutation Delay For Multi-Pole Brushless Dc Motors

US Patent:
5319289, Jun 7, 1994
Filed:
Feb 24, 1992
Appl. No.:
7/840440
Inventors:
Charles C. Austin - Mission Viejo CA
Bertram J. White - Irvine CA
Assignee:
Silicon Systems, Inc. - Tustin CA
International Classification:
H02P 602
US Classification:
318254
Abstract:
A circuit to provide adaptive commutation delay for multi-pole brushless DC motors. The circuit adjusts the commutation delay as a function of the rotational speed of the motor to maximize motor torque and minimize power consumption. Unlike the prior art, the circuit avoids the need for complex circuitry or external components. The circuit may be implemented entirely within a single integrated circuit. The circuit includes a back-EMF sensing input, an oscillator, a voltage holding and proportioning circuit, one or more comparators and, optionally, an external control circuit. The back-EMF sensing input controls the operation of the oscillator. The voltage holding and proportioning circuit processes the oscillator output and provides outputs which are compared by the comparators. The comparators produce commutation delay signals and, optionally, other signals. The circuit also allows adjustment to compensate for non-ideal back-EMF-to-rotor-position correspondence or fixed time delays inherent in the commutation process.
