Jan 8, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/338599
Inventors:
Raymond W. Blasingame - Richardson TX, US
Ronald W. Chandler - Plano TX, US
Norman B. Stapleton - Princeton TX, US
Assignee:
Honeywell International Inc. - Morristown NJ
International Classification:
G01N021/86
G01V008/00
US Classification:
25055912, 25055936, 356614
Abstract:
Optical sensor methods and systems for detecting the edge of an object are disclosed. An optical sensor having dual equal area active regions can be provided, and a uniform light source located opposite the optical sensor, such that an occlusion of light from the uniform light source provides location determination data of an object via the optical sensor regardless of the direction of motion of the occlusion relative to the dual equal area active regions thereof.

Attenuated Barrel Selection Algorithms

US Patent:
7275878, Oct 2, 2007
Filed:
May 17, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/130511
Inventors:
Gary Landry - Allen TX, US
Norman Brent Stapleton - Princeton TX, US
James K. Guenter - Garland TX, US
Jimmy A. Tatum - Plano TX, US
Assignee:
Finisar Corporation - Sunnyvale CA
International Classification:
G02B 6/42
H04B 10/04
US Classification:
385 92, 385140, 398186, 398200
Abstract:
The present invention relates to controlling parameters of an optical output of an optical transmitter. An optical package can be selected based on a level of attenuation of a parameter of a transmitter output by the optical package. The laser and the optical package can be assembled and a parameter of the transmitter output can be measured. An optical barrel can be selected based on the measurement, wherein the optical barrel is selected based on an attenuation level to satisfy a range of a desired parameter value. The optical package and the optical barrel can be assembled. A system for assembling the optical device is also described.

Opto-Isolator Including A Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser

US Patent:
7835410, Nov 16, 2010
Filed:
Feb 7, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/027391
Inventors:
James K. Guenter - Garland TX, US
Jimmy A. Tatum - Plano TX, US
Norman Brent Stapleton - Princeton TX, US
Richard L. Bell - Richardson TX, US
Harold Young Walker - Plano TX, US
Jose Joaquin Aizpuru - Murphy TX, US
Assignee:
Finisar Corporation - Sunnyvale CA
International Classification:
H01S 3/13
US Classification:
372 2901, 372 50124, 372 5021
Abstract:
The present invention relates to opto-isolators. Opto-isolators are disclosed that include a transmitter package and a vertical VCSEL disposed within the transmitter package. The opto-isolators further include a receiver package and a photodetector disposed within the receiver package. The photodetector is optically coupled to the VCSEL and configured to receive an output optical signal generated by the VCSEL. The opto-isolators further include an alignment package configured to receive the transmitter package and the receiver package. In another embodiment, opto-isolators include a VCSEL and a photodetector optically coupled to the VCSEL and configured to receive an output optical signal generated by the VCSEL. The opto-isolators further include a package enclosing both the VCSEL and the photodetector.

Vcsel Pin Sensor

US Patent:
2006004, Mar 2, 2006
Filed:
Aug 15, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/203928
Inventors:
Trevor Schelp - Dallas TX, US
Ronald Chandler - Pittsburg TX, US
James Guenter - Garland TX, US
Norman Stapleton - Princeton TX, US
International Classification:
H01J 5/02
US Classification:
250239000
Abstract:
A vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) operable as a signal emitter and a silicon photodetector adapted for receiving light signals co-mounted in a common canister. Also containable is a four lead header and an isolating ceramic spacer. The canister can be electrically connected to a first lead from the header. The isolating ceramic spacer is adapted for mounting of the VCSEL above the level of the photodetector within the can. The VCSEL is electrically connectable to a second and third lead from the header and the photodetector is electrically connectable to the second and a fourth lead from the header. Co-packaging of a VCSEL and photodetector in common device canisters can yield about a contrast ratio between an object's presence in front of the sensing system. A small pattern necessary for high accuracy is provided by the system and no barrier is necessary between the emitter and detector.
