Cold 48-Volt Engine Start Using 12-Volt Battery

US Patent:
2020008, Mar 19, 2020
Filed:
Aug 6, 2019
Appl. No.:
16/532644
Inventors:
- Auburn Hills MI, US
Brian J. McKay - West Bloomfield MI, US
International Classification:
B60K 6/24
H02M 3/158
Abstract:
A system for starting an internal combustion engine of a hybrid vehicle includes a 12-volt battery; a 48-volt battery; a DC-DC converter in electrical communication with the 12-volt battery and with the 48-volt battery; and an electric machine in electrical communication with the 48-volt battery. The electric machine is mechanically connected to an engine. In a first initial or cold start mode of operation, the DC-DC converter receives voltage from the 12-volt battery, boosts the voltage to a voltage of about 48 volts, with 48-volt power being applied to the electric machine for activating the electric machine, causing the electric machine to start the engine. In a second mode of operation, the electric machine receives 48 volt power, from the 48-volt battery alone, for activating the electric machine, causing the electric machine to start the engine.

Predictive Powertrain Limits Strategy For Autonomous/Automated Driving Vehicle

US Patent:
2018017, Jun 21, 2018
Filed:
Mar 20, 2017
Appl. No.:
15/463350
Inventors:
- Auburn Hills MI, US
Brian McKay - West Bloomfield MI, US
Assignee:
Continental Automotive Systems, Inc. - Auburn Hills MI
International Classification:
B60W 30/14
B60K 31/04
B60K 1/00
B60L 11/18
Abstract:
An expanded powertrain interface and strategy for an autonomous driving controller to control powertrain torque (or vehicle acceleration/deceleration) capability at the current operating point, in addition to capability for subsequent operating points at a future time based on predictive assessment of powertrain energy management, subsystem contraints/limits, and capability in the future. The powertrain interface and strategy applies to a vehicle with electrified powertrain control (hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) or pure battery electric vehicle (BEV)) with an autonomous driving (AD) capability (either full or semi-automated driving). This powertrain interface and strategy may also be used with non-electrified powertrain (conventional) systems based on available combustion engine torque at the target vehicle speed and gear.

Stoichiometric Air To Fuel Ratio Sensor System

US Patent:
2015032, Nov 12, 2015
Filed:
May 29, 2014
Appl. No.:
14/289688
Inventors:
- Auburn Hills MI, US
Brian J. McKay - West Bloomfield MI, US
Assignee:
Continental Automotive Systems, Inc. - Auburn Hills MI
International Classification:
G01N 27/12
Abstract:
A sensor system () determines the Stoichiometric Air to Fuel Ratio (SAFR) of fuel mixtures. The system includes a first electrode () and a second electrode (), with the first electrode surrounding the second electrode so that a fuel mixture can flow between the first electrode and the second electrode. The electrodes are constructed and arranged to provide data for determining a conductivity and permittivity of the fuel mixture. A temperature sensor () is constructed and arranged to measure a temperature of the fuel mixture. A processor () is constructed and arranged to determine the SAFR of the fuel mixture based on the measured temperature and permittivity of the fuel mixture.
