Constant Force Actuator

US Patent:
6920936, Jul 26, 2005
Filed:
Dec 17, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/321858
Inventors:
Todor K. Sheiretov - Houston TX, US
Roger A. Post - Arcanum OH, US
Carl J. Roy - Richmond TX, US
Joseph F. Cordera - Houston TX, US
Assignee:
Schlumberger Technology Corporation - Sugar Land TX
International Classification:
E21B023/00
US Classification:
166382, 166206, 166216, 1662411
Abstract:
A substantially constant force actuator that is applicable to centralizers, anchors and tractors for use in wells and is applicable to lifting devices such as jacks and load supporting devices. One or more sets of linkage arms are angularly movable by the force of one or more force transmitting members from a minimum angle with the force transmitting members at maximum spacing to a maximum angle with the force transmitting members at minimum spacing to impart a substantially constant force to an object or surface, with the direction of the force being substantially perpendicular to the direction of relative linear movement of the force transmitting members. With the linkage arms at their minimum angles, movement control elements on at least one of the force transmitting members react with guide surfaces of the linkage arms to achieve angular linkage movement and to develop a substantially constant force during angular linkage movement.

Constant Force Actuator

US Patent:
7334642, Feb 26, 2008
Filed:
Mar 29, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/277778
Inventors:
Falk W. Doering - Stafford TX, US
Carl J. Roy - Richmond TX, US
Assignee:
Schlumberger Technology Corporation - Sugar Land TX
International Classification:
E21B 23/00
US Classification:
166382, 166206, 166216, 1662411
Abstract:
A radially expandable tool is provided that includes a tool body and a radially moveable member coupled to the tool body and in force receiving relation to a constant force actuator. The radially moveable member is movable by the constant force actuator from an closed position to a plurality of radially expanded open positions, which includes a fully open position. The constant force actuator includes an opening arm having a force transmission member; and a movement control guide in force reacting engagement with the force transmission member. The tool also includes a linear force generator; which applies a linear force to the constant force actuator, which the actuator transfers to a radial force perpendicular to the linear force. When the linear force is constant, the radial force transferred by the actuator is constant for each radial position of the radially moveable member from the closed position to the fully opened position due to the interaction of the force transmission member and the movement control guide.

Self-Anchoring Device With Force Amplification

US Patent:
7516782, Apr 14, 2009
Filed:
Dec 13, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/610143
Inventors:
Todor K. Sheiretov - Houston TX, US
Dwight C. Chilcoat - Fresno TX, US
Robin A. Ewan - Stafford TX, US
Carl J Roy - Richmond TX, US
Matthew Billingham - Houston TX, US
Franz Aguirre - Missouri City TX, US
Assignee:
Schlumberger Technology Corporation - Sugar Land TX
International Classification:
E21B 23/02
US Classification:
166206, 166382
Abstract:
A downhole tool is provided that includes a grip assembly for contacting a well formation. The grip assembly includes a gripper body; and a centralizer that is attached to and radially expandable with respect to the gripper body and that has a geometry which is lockable by a locking device. The grip assembly also includes a force amplifier in force transmitting relation with the centralizer, wherein the force amplifier transfers a force in a first direction to a much larger force in a second direction when the centralizer is locked by the locking device.

Conveying A Tool Along A Non-Vertical Well

US Patent:
6179055, Jan 30, 2001
Filed:
Sep 11, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/150822
Inventors:
Alan J. Sallwasser - Houston TX
Roger A. Post - Houston TX
Carl J. Roy - Houston TX
Assignee:
Schlumberger Technology Corporation - Houston TX
International Classification:
E21B 4700
US Classification:
1662542
Abstract:
A conveyance apparatus for conveying at least one logging tool through an earth formation traversed by a horizontal or highly deviated borehole. The conveyance apparatus comprises a pair of arcuate-shaped cams pivotally mounted to a support member, a spring member for biasing the arcuate surface of each cam into contact with the borehole wall, and actuators operatively connected to each cam. A logging tool is attached to the conveyance apparatus. When either actuator is activated in a first direction, the cam connected to the activated actuator is linearly displaced forward and the arcuate surface of the cam slides along the borehole wall. When either actuator is activated in a second direction, the activated actuator pulls the connected cam backwards and the spring member thereby urges the arcuate surface of the cam to lock against the borehole wall. Once the cam is locked, further movement of the actuator propels both the conveyance apparatus and the logging tool forward along the highly deviated or horizontal borehole.
