Titanium Sealing Glasses And Seals Formed Therefrom

US Patent:
5693580, Dec 2, 1997
Filed:
Sep 13, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/713385
Inventors:
Richard K. Brow - Albuquerque NM
Howard L. McCollister - Albuquerque NM
Carol C. Phifer - Albuquerque NM
Delbert E. Day - Rolla MO
Assignee:
Sandia Corporation - Albuquerque NM
International Classification:
C03C 800
C03C 315
US Classification:
501 14
Abstract:
Alkaline-earth lanthanoborate sealing-glass compositions containing CaO, La. sub. 2 O. sub. 3, B. sub. 2 O. sub. 3, TiO. sub. 2 and Al. sub. 2 O. sub. 3 in various combinations of mole-% are provided. These sealing-glass compositions are useful for forming hermetic glass-to-metal seals with titanium and titanium alloys that have a high aqueous durability for component or device applications requiring exposure to moisture, water or body fluids. Particular applications of the titanium sealing-glass compositions include forming glass-to-metal seals for lithium batteries and implanted biomedical devices (e. g. batteries, pacemakers, defibrillators, pumps).

Sealing Glasses For Titanium And Titanium Alloys

US Patent:
5648302, Jul 15, 1997
Filed:
Sep 13, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/713294
Inventors:
Richard K. Brow - Albuquerque NM
Howard L. McCollister - Albuquerque NM
Carol C. Phifer - Albuquerque NM
Delbert E. Day - Rolla MO
Assignee:
Sandia Corporation - Albuquerque NM
International Classification:
C03C 3068
C03C 315
US Classification:
501 50
Abstract:
Barium lanthanoborate sealing-glass compositions are provided comprising various combinations (in terms of mole-%) of boron oxide (B. sub. 2 O. sub. 3), barium oxide (BaO), lanthanum oxide (La. sub. 2 O. sub. 3), and at least one other oxide selected from the group consisting of aluminum oxide (Al. sub. 2 O. sub. 3), calcium oxide (CaO), lithium oxide (Li. sub. 2 O), sodium oxide (Na. sub. 2 O), silicon dioxide (SiO. sub. 2), or titanium dioxide (TiO. sub. 2). These sealing-glass compositions are useful for forming hermetic glass-to-metal seals with titanium and titanium alloys having an improved aqueous durability and favorable sealing characteristics. Examples of the sealing-glass compositions are provided having coefficients of thermal expansion about that of titanium or titanium alloys, and with sealing temperatures less than about 900. degree. C. , and generally about 700. degree. -800. degree. C. The barium lanthanoborate sealing-glass compositions are useful for components and devices requiring prolonged exposure to moisture or water, and for implanted biomedical devices (e. g.
