Process For Recycling Plastic Container Scrap

US Patent:
4379525, Apr 12, 1983
Filed:
Aug 6, 1981
Appl. No.:
6/290643
Inventors:
Casimir W. Nowicki - Sylvania OH
Alan M. Jaffee - Toledo OH
Assignee:
Owens-Illinois, Inc. - Toledo OH
International Classification:
B02C 1914
US Classification:
241 20
Abstract:
A batch process for recycling plastic container scrap is disclosed comprising the steps of reducing a container bearing an externally disposed label to granules, agitating the granules in hot water to remove the label material portion from the plastic portion, separating the hot water and label portion from the plastic granules, filtering and recycling the hot water into the batch while separating the waste label residue, remixing and reagitating until substantially all of the waste label residue is removed. Subsequently, the plastic granules are floated over a weir and collected in a dewatering station with the hot wash water recycled into a hot water reservoir. A major portion of the wash water is removed from the granules in the dewatering station. Substantially all of the residual wash water is removed in a drying station.

Abstract:
A hollow plastic bottle comprising a bottom wall, a side wall about which a label is wrapped and a neck with a finish for receiving a closure. The bottom wall is shaped to withstand drop loads and comprises a central portion, a first annular portion extending outwardly and downwardly from the periphery of the central portion, a second curved portion extending from the periphery of the first annular portion and having a concave inner surface and a convex exterior surface, and a third annular portion extending from periphery of the curved portion upwardly and outwardly to an annular shoulder portion connected to the side wall of the bottle.

Applying Labels To Blow Molded Articles

US Patent:
4624722, Nov 25, 1986
Filed:
Jan 12, 1984
Appl. No.:
6/570059
Inventors:
Casimir W. Nowicki - Sylvania OH
Assignee:
Owens-Illinois, Inc. - Toledo OH
International Classification:
B29D 2310
B65C 326
B32B 3100
B29F 110
US Classification:
156156
Abstract:
In the forming of an article by blow molding a parison into conformity with a cavity defined by a partible a method and appartus which comprises positioning a label of flexible material on each section of the mold, each label having a width in a circumferential direction such that a portion of one axial edge of each label extends beyond the side edge of the cavity forming portions of the section of the mold and the other axial edge, moving the mold sections toward one another so that they close and define the mold cavity, deflecting the edge of each label radially inwardly before the molds close such that as the molds close the deflected edge will overlap with an adjacent edge of the adjacent label, and blowing the parison into conformity with the cavity such that the edges of the two labels overlap and register to define a continuous label about the article.

Method And Apparatus For Packing Plastic Bottles

US Patent:
4534153, Aug 13, 1985
Filed:
Jul 11, 1983
Appl. No.:
6/512309
Inventors:
Casimir W. Nowicki - Sylvania OH
Assignee:
Owens--Illinois, Inc. - Toledo OH
International Classification:
B65B 506
B65B 3544
US Classification:
53448
Abstract:
A system for the handling of lightweight plastic containers into and through a case-packing operation wherein the containers are moved in a single line onto a conveyor where a diverting guide will move the containers into a multiple lane receiver. The multiple lane receiver is rotatable about its longitudinal axis through a 90. degree. angle, either with the container bottoms facing to the left or facing to the right. On the left side of the receiver, a carton-handling arrangement tips a carton toward the containers which are held in the receiver. A pusher mechanism moves the containers, as a group, from the receiver into the carton, and the carton is then returned to its original position.

Apparatus For Applying Labels In The Molds Of A Plastic Blow Molding Machine

US Patent:
4680000, Jul 14, 1987
Filed:
Nov 25, 1985
Appl. No.:
6/802117
Inventors:
Casimir W. Nowicki - Sylvania OH
Thomas A. Lucius - Toledo OH
Ronald S. Kaminski - Bowling Green OH
Robert P. Snyder - Sylvania OH
Assignee:
Owens-Illinois, Inc. - Toledo OH
International Classification:
B29C 4924
US Classification:
425126R
Abstract:
Apparatus for applying labels in the molds of a plastic blow molding machine of the type wherein a plurality of sets of molds are mounted on a wheel rotatable about a horizontal axis and the molds are moved toward and away from one another to enclose a parison and the parison is then blown to the confines of the cavity between the mold sections which comprises removing labels successively from one or more magazines, depositing the labels on an endless conveyor which transports the labels to a position adjacent an open mold and laterally transferring the labels from the conveyor to a position within the molds such that when a mold closes about a plastic parison and the parison is blown, the labels become adhered to the blown plastic bottle.

In-Mold Labeling Of Injection Blow Molded Hollow Plastic Articles

US Patent:
4808366, Feb 28, 1989
Filed:
Oct 1, 1987

B29C 4924
US Classification:
264509
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for placement of labels within the blow molds of an injection blow molding machine. The injection blow molding machine comprising a turret having plurality of circumferentially spaced surfaces, each of which supports a plurality of spaced core rods, a plurality of injection molds at an injection molding station for forming a plurality of preforms, and a plurality of blow mold sections at a blow molding station which close about the preforms so that the preforms can be blown outwardly against the confines of the mold to form hollow plastic articles. The blow molds include movable bases exposing the interior of the blow molds when the blow molds are closed about preforms on the core rods. A positioning apparatus positions a plurality of labels at the blowing station and a plurality of cylindrical vacuum mandrels are rotated to pick-up the labels and thereafter the mandrels are translated to deliver the labels to the blow molds through the open bottoms after which the mandrels are retracted, the mold bottoms are closed and the hollow articles are blown in the molds with the labels on the outer surfaces thereof.
