He was the last of a breed of Asian anti-colonialist figures that included Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh, Indonesia's Sukarno, Myanmar's Aung San and Cambodia's King Norodom Sihanouk, who died last year. Chin Peng's dubious distinction was that unlike the others, he didn't win his struggle.

"I suppose I am the last of the region's old revolutionary leaders," Chin Peng, which was his nom de guerre, wrote in his 2003 memoir 'My Side of History.' "It was my choice to lead from the shadows, away from the limelight."

Born on Oct, 21, 1924, in the northern state of Perak, Chin Peng first gained public attention during World War II, when he and other guerrillas provided the bulk of resistance to the Japanese occupation after Allied troops were swept from the Malayan peninsula and Singapore.

Ong Boon Hua, better known as Chin Peng, passed away at 6.20am, a thousand kilometres from his birthplace in the small town of Sitiawan in Malaysia's Perak state. His death came just a month before his 89th birthday.

A party leader since he was 19 years old, Chin Peng led a CPM guerrilla campaign against Japanese, British and Commonwealth forces during the 13 years of the so-called "Malayan Emergency" in an attempt to establish an independent communist state.

The formation of Malaysia, then consisting of Malaya, Brunei, North Borneo, Sarawak and Singapore, was officially established on Sept 16, three years after Chin Peng left southern Thailand in 1960 for Beijing, which would be his base for two decades.

Ang King Hud, 59, former member of the defunct Malayan People's Army, said he was sad that Chin Peng had died without any formal recognition of the significant role he played in Malaysian history, arguing that returning his ashes to the country should not cause political setbacks for the government.
