Resilient Abrasive Article With Hard Anti-Loading Size Coating

US Patent:
6406504, Jun 18, 2002
Filed:
Mar 28, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/535782
Inventors:
Jonathan M. Lise - Woodbury MN
Chris A. Minick - Stillwater MN
Assignee:
3M Innovative Properties Company - St. Paul MN
International Classification:
B24D 300
US Classification:
51297, 51295, 51296, 51298, 51299, 51309
Abstract:
A resilient abrasive article includes a resilient elongatable substrate, abrasive particles adhesively bonded to the substrate with a flexible make coat, and a hard size coat applied over the abrasive particles and flexible make coat. The size coat provides an anti-loading layer which is applied thinly enough to prevent the size coat from cracking and tearing the substrate during use.

Sanding Sponge With High Tear Strength Backing Layer

US Patent:
6419573, Jul 16, 2002
Filed:
Dec 9, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/458166
Inventors:
Jonathan M. Lise - Woodbury MN
Chris A. Minick - Stillwater MN
Assignee:
3M Innovative Properties Company - St. Paul MN
International Classification:
B24D 1100
US Classification:
451533, 451534, 451539, 451532, 15118
Abstract:
A resilient flexible sanding sponge including a foam backing layer having a layer of abrasive particles distributed along one of its major surfaces that are adhered together and to the backing layer by a layer of flexible adhesive material. That backing layer has about the same flexibility and conformability as the backing layers on prior art sanding sponges, while having a significantly higher tear strength than prior art sanding sponges. That high tear strength backing layer can either be (1) a layer of felted urethane foam; or (2) a layer of foam that encompasses a reinforcing material. When the backing layer is of felted urethane foam the layer of flexible adhesive material can have a major structurally sound portion below the surface along which the layer of abrasive particles is positioned and a minor portion adhering the abrasive particles along that surface to leave large portions of the abrasive particles projecting above the layer of adhesive material where they can effectively abrade a surface over which the sanding sponge is rubbed.

Abrasive Product And Method Of Making The Same

US Patent:
6613113, Sep 2, 2003
Filed:
Dec 28, 2001
Appl. No.:
10/033390
Inventors:
Chris A. Minick - Stillwater MN
Michael J. Annen - Hudson WI
Eric W. Nelson - Stillwater MN
Assignee:
3M Innovative Properties Company - St. Paul MN
International Classification:
B24D 300
US Classification:
51298, 51295, 51307, 51308, 51309, 51293
Abstract:
The invention provides a flexible abrasive product comprising a flexible sheet-like substrate comprising a multiplicity of separated resilient bodies connected to each other in a generally planar array in a pattern which provides open spaces between adjacent connected bodies, each body having a first surface and an opposite second surface; and abrasive particles to cause at least the first surface to be an abrasive surface. A method of making the abrasive is provided by providing the substrate and providing abrasive particles to at least the first surface to provide an abrasive surface.
