System And Method Of Using Image Grids In Detection Of Discrete Objects

US Patent:
8604969, Dec 10, 2013
Filed:
Apr 5, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/753955
Inventors:
Thomas E. Wood - Portsmouth RI, US
Douglas W. Arent - Portsmouth RI, US
Charles M. Ciany - Newport RI, US
Clifford M Curtis - Portsmouth RI, US
Thomas B. Pederson - Portsmouth RI, US
Assignee:
Raytheon Company - Waltham MA
International Classification:
G01S 13/00
US Classification:
342 93, 342 90, 342191
Abstract:
A sensor is used to identify detections of discrete objects in a search grid. An image grid of the detections is created. The image grid is analyzed to identify a pattern of detections. The pattern of detections is used to identify objects of interest.

Elastomeric Shutter Mechanism

US Patent:
5419232, May 30, 1995
Filed:
Mar 22, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/215795
Inventors:
Clifford M. Curtis - Portsmouth RI
Assignee:
The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Navy - Washington DC
International Classification:
B63G 828
US Classification:
89 181
Abstract:
An elastomeric shutter mechanism for opening and closing a passageway in wall of a vessel, such as a submarine hull. A single, unitary, retractable shutter member made of an elastomeric material is partially attached to the wall around a portion of a passageway. The single, unitary, retractable shutter member is moveable from a closed position when the unattached portion of the shutter member is abutting the wall around the passageway to an open position when the unattached portion of the shutter member is retracted away from the wall around the passageway. Cables are attached to the inside surface of the shutter member for retracting the shutter member and opening the passageway. Mechanical stops are positioned inside of the vessel for abutting the shutter member when retracted to the open position by the cables. On an underwater vessel such as a submarine, the shutter member is sealed in the closed position by a pressure differential between the inside surface and the outside surface of the shutter member or latched in place in the closed position.

Flow Release Elastomeric Ejection System

US Patent:
6216626, Apr 17, 2001
Filed:
Apr 2, 1999
Appl. No.:
9/287170
Inventors:
Clifford M. Curtis - Portsmouth RI
Assignee:
The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Navy - Washington DC
International Classification:
B63B 100
US Classification:
114238
Abstract:
An apparatus for providing a rapid fluid impulse which can be used for launching vehicles into a liquid medium. The apparatus comprises a ring diaphragm of coupled concentric elastomeric rings, adapted to accept pressurized fluid at an interior side. The pressurized fluid extends the elastomeric rings of the ring diaphragm, placing them in shear strain. When the fluid is released, a kinetic impulse is provided and the ring diaphragm returns to its resting position. The apparatus further comprises a central check valve on the ring diaphragm. The check valve allows fluid to flow from an exterior side, through the ring diaphragm, to the interior side when exterior fluid pressure exceeds interior pressure. The invention is useful in a submarine vehicle launch assembly wherein the ring diaphragm is a component thereof.

Baffled Muzzle Brake And Seal System For Submerged Gun Operation

US Patent:
5966858, Oct 19, 1999
Filed:
Mar 23, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/049655
Inventors:
Clifford M. Curtis - Portsmouth RI
Gary R. Berlam - Warwick RI
Ivan N. Kirschner - Portsmouth RI
Laurence M. Dean - Newport RI
Assignee:
The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Navy - Washington DC
International Classification:
F41A 2146
F41F 310
US Classification:
42 114
Abstract:
A baffled muzzle brake and seal system for submerged gun operation includes a muzzle brake chamber mounted to the muzzle of a submerged gun barrel. A baffle assembly mounted within the chamber deflects the propellant gasses produced by operation of the gun and sabot fragments into an annular cher surrounding the baffle assembly while allowing passage of a projectile through the assembly. A valve seal in the muzzle end of the muzzle brake chamber cycles between a fully open condition, to allow passage of the projectile, and a fully closed position, to seal the muzzle brake chamber against the entry of water. At least one pressurized air input allows the muzzle brake chamber to be pressurized when the seal is not in the fully closed position, thereby preventing entry of water. A gas exhaust provides a means for removing propellant gasses from the chamber.
