6481907, Nov 19, 2002
Filed:
Mar 1, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/797460
Inventors:
Matthew Banach - Gurnee IL
Larry Ancahas - Gurnee IL
Clive P. Hohberger - Glencoe IL
Assignee:
ZIH Corporation - Wilmington DE
International Classification:
B41J 1126
US Classification:
4006152
Abstract:
A printer is provided for programming a radio frequency identification (RFID) label and may be used to print indicia on the RFID label. The printer has a pin module which can be raised to engage the RFID label during processing of the RFID label through the printer so that the RFID label can be programmed.

Electronic Identification System With Forward Error Correction System

US Patent:
6686829, Feb 3, 2004
Filed:
Jan 19, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/234149
Inventors:
Clive Paul Hohberger - Glencoe IL
Christopher Gordon Gervase Turner - Gauteng, ZA
Assignee:
ZIH Corp. - Hamilton
International Classification:
H04Q 522
US Classification:
340 101, 340 103, 340 104, 340 343
Abstract:
An electronic radio frequency (RF) identification system is disclosed and claimed. The system includes an interrogator and a plurality of RF transponders to n. In use, each transponder is operative in response to an interrogation signal to respond with a forward error correctable data message including base data encoded as symbol characters in accordance with a forward error correcting code, such as a Reed Solomon Code, and check characters on the base data as defined in the forward error correcting code. The interrogator utilizes data relating to the forward error correcting code, the symbol characters and check characters in the received forward error correctable data message, to reconstruct the base data in the event of corruption of the forward error correctable data message during transmission.

System And Method For Selective Communication With Rfid Transponders

US Patent:
6848616, Feb 1, 2005
Filed:
Mar 11, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/249039
Inventors:
Boris Y. Tsirline - Libertyville IL, US
Clive P. Hohberger - Highland Park IL, US
Robert Gawelczyk - Chicago IL, US
Assignee:
ZIH Corp., a Delaware Corporation with its principal office in Hamilton, Bermuda
International Classification:
G06K 708
US Classification:
235449, 235432, 235451, 400419, 3405227
Abstract:
A system having an RFID transceiver is adapted to communicate exclusively with a single RFID transponder located in a predetermined confined transponder target area. The system includes a magnetic coupling device comprising a magnetic flux generator responsive to a radio frequency input signal and a magnetic field pattern former. The pattern former is configured to collect flux produced by the flux generator and to form a field pattern in the location of the transponder target area. The system establishes, at predetermined transceiver power levels, a mutual magnetic coupling which is selective exclusively for a single transponder located in the transponder target area.

Method And Apparatus For Associating On Demand Certain Selected Media And Value-Adding Elements

US Patent:
6857714, Feb 22, 2005
Filed:
Oct 25, 2001
Appl. No.:
10/001364
Inventors:
Clive P. Hohberger - Glencoe IL, US
Matthew R. Ream - Naperville IL, US
Daniel Donato - Mundelein IL, US
Assignee:
ZIH Corp. - Hamilton
International Classification:
B41J003/00
B32B031/00
US Classification:
347 2, 156350, 156384
Abstract:
A thermal transfer media printer is disclosed. In one embodiment, the printer selectively programs RFID transponders, and then embeds them into conventional on-demand printed media between the adhesive layer and the release liner. Selective configuration of each printed media sample by addition of value-adding elements may be performed independently for each media sample, under software control during processing of each media sample format print control program. An add-on mechanism is disclosed that can be operatively attached to a conventional media printer. This allows RFID transponder labels to be selectively applied at precise locations on the printed surface of on-demand printed media in connection with existing printers.
