Syringe Tip Cap With Self-Sealing Filter

US Patent:
5125415, Jun 30, 1992
Filed:
Jun 19, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/540159
Inventors:
Craig J. Bell - Winchester NH
Assignee:
Smiths Industries Medical Systems, Inc. - Keene NH
International Classification:
A61B 500
US Classification:
128766
Abstract:
A syringe tip cap and a method for purging air from a syringe-like container containing air and hazardous liquid. The cap contains a hydrophilic filter which, when dry, allows air to pass through the filter. When the air is purged from the syringe, liquid from the container is pushed or drawn to the filter. The filter expands when wetted, seals the cap, and prevents further fluid flow. A flow restrictor may be included within the cap to concentrate the flow to only a portion of the filter to prevent premature sealing of the filter.

Method And Apparatus For Lavaging With Oxygenated Irrigating Fluid While Suctioning

US Patent:
5181908, Jan 26, 1993
Filed:
Dec 7, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/624238
Inventors:
Craig J. Bell - Winchester NH
Assignee:
Smiths Industries Medical Systems Inc. - Keene NH
International Classification:
A61M 3700
US Classification:
604 24
Abstract:
A suction catheter and method of using same in which oxygenated irrigating fluid is provided to the suctioning site. The oxygenated fluid can be formed using a Y-connector to mix oxygen and fluid in a single conduit, a reservoir of fluid having oxygen bubbled into it, or through the use of an oxygen exchanger. Pressurized oxygen-containing gas may be fed to the Y-connector to force the gas and irrigating fluid out through the catheter. The suction may be a dual lumen catheter or a tube within a tube.

Method Of Removing Undesirable Fluid From Respiration Passages By Suction Catheter Assemblies

US Patent:
5779687, Jul 14, 1998
Filed:
Feb 16, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/601347
Inventors:
Craig J. Bell - Winchester NH
William Hollister - E. Sullivan NH
Assignee:
Smiths Industries Public Limited Company - London
International Classification:
A61M 532
US Classification:
604265
Abstract:
A method of removing undesirable fluid from the respiration passages of a patient uses a closed system suction catheter assembly having a protective sleeve enclosing an aspirating catheter extending through a sliding seal in a patient coupling. The catheter has an antimicrobial surface such as formed by silver sulfadiazine which reduces the accumulation of bacteria while the catheter is within the protective sleeve and prolongs the useful life of the assembly.
