Method For Increasing Fiber Density In Electrostatic Flocking

US Patent:
7354626, Apr 8, 2008
Filed:
Oct 26, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/586277
Inventors:
Charles J. Patrissi - Newport RI, US
Russell R. Bessette - Mattapoisett MA, US
Louis G. Carreiro - Westport MA, US
Yong K. Kim - Dartmouth MA, US
Thomas M. Arruda - Quincy MA, US
Craig M. Deschenes - Somerset MA, US
Assignee:
The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Navy - Washington DC
International Classification:
B05D 1/14
US Classification:
427462, 427475
Abstract:
A direct charging electrostatic flocking method is provided for the fabrication of a fibrous structure. Fibers are deposited directly on a first electrically conductive surface while a second electrically conductive surface with an adhesive thereon is disposed over the first surface. A vacuum is created in the space between the first electrically conductive surface and the second electrically conductive surface. The vacuum is then filled with sulfur hexafluoride gas. An electric field is generated between the first and second electrically conductive surfaces. The fibers leave the first electrically conductive surface, accelerate through the electric field and sulfur hexafluoride gas, and are coupled on one end thereof to the adhesive. As a result of using sulfur hexafluoride rather than air there is an increase in fiber density of the fibrous structure.

Method Of Fabricating A Fibrous Structure For Use In Electrochemical Applications

US Patent:
2005026, Dec 1, 2005
Filed:
May 18, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/847765
Inventors:
Maria Medeiros - Bristol RI, US
Eric Dow - Barrington RI, US
Russell Bessette - Mattapoisett MA, US
Craig Deschenes - Somerset MA, US
Christopher Lafratta - Brighton MA, US
Armand Lewis - Mattapoisett MA, US
Yong Kim - Dartmouth MA, US
International Classification:
B05D001/12
B05D001/04
US Classification:
427180000, 427457000
Abstract:
A method is provided for the fabrication of a fibrous structure. Fibers are deposited in a hopper connected to an electrode. A mesh covers the hopper opening and the hopper is inverted and suspended over an adhesive coated substrate. An electric field is generated between the hopper and the substrate while the hopper is simultaneously shaken. As a result, fibers fall through the mesh, aligned along the electric field lines, travel through the electric field, and are coupled on one end thereof to the adhesive.

Method Of Fabricating A Bipolar Electrode For Use In A Semi Fuel Cell

US Patent:
2009026, Oct 29, 2009
Filed:
Apr 10, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/386184
Inventors:
Charles J. Patrissi - Newport RI, US
Maria G. Medeiros - Bristol RI, US
Louis G. Carreiro - Westport MA, US
Steven P. Tucker - Portsmouth RI, US
Russell R. Bessette - Mattapoisett MA, US
Craig M. Deschenes - Somerset MA, US
International Classification:
C25D 5/34
C25D 5/48
C23C 28/00
US Classification:
205183
Abstract:
A bipolar electrode fabricated with a combination of materials that will physically separate the catholyte from the metal anode of the electrode while providing high electrical conductivity between the metal anode and the catalyst cathode. This is accomplished by layering the catalyst cathode over a composite of conductive adhesive and conductive foil that is then affixed to the metal anode.
