Isolation Of Phenyl Ester Salts From Mixtures Comprising Sulfolane

US Patent:
6498124, Dec 24, 2002
Filed:
Jun 1, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/870641
Inventors:
Kevin J. Fontenot - Kingsport TN
David C. Attride - Jonesborough TN
Keith B. Terhune - Batesville AR
Assignee:
Eastman Chemical Company - Kingsport TN
International Classification:
C07C23124
US Classification:
504 70, 584 68
Abstract:
The invention relates to a process for isolating a phenyl ester salt from a mixture comprising sulfolane (tetrahydrothiophene-1,1-dioxide). The invention includes adjusting the temperature of a mixture comprising a phenyl ester salt and sulfolane to a temperature of about 100-150Â C. This step leads to the formation of a mixture comprising a solid phenyl ester salt and sulfolane. Next, the solid phenyl ester salt is separated, while maintaining the temperature of the mixture at about 100-150Â C. The invention also relates to a process that includes adding a sufficient amount of a solvent to a mixture comprising a phenyl ester salt and sulfolane to decrease the viscosity or the density of the mixture. The solvent added has a density less than about 1. 20 g/cm at 100Â C.

Abstract:
Disclosed is a 4-step process for the preparation of alkyl esters of 1-methylcyclopropanecarboxylic acid which comprises the steps of (1) converting -butyrolactone to -methyl--butyrolactone; (2) converting the -methyl--butyrolactone from step (1) to an alkyl 4-halo-2-methylbutyrate; (3) producing a xylene solution of the alkyl 4-halo-2-methylbutyrate; and (4) contacting the xylene solution of an alkyl 4-halo-2-methylbutyrate from step (3) with an alkali metal alkoxide under conditions of temperature and pressure which causes vaporization of (i) an alkanol as it is formed and (ii) an alkyl 1-methylcyclopropanecarboxylate as it is formed from the alkyl 4-halo-2-methylbutyrate. Also disclosed are processes whereby the alkyl 1-methylcyclopropanecarboxylate, prepared as described above, is converted to 1-methylcyclopropylamine.

Wood Heater With Enhanced Microwave Barrier System

US Patent:
2012016, Jun 28, 2012
Filed:
Dec 12, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/323133
Inventors:
David Carl Attride - Jonesborough TN, US
Brad William Overturf - Kingsport TN, US
Assignee:
EASTMAN CHEMICAL COMPANY - Kingsport TN
International Classification:
H05B 6/70
US Classification:
219690, 219761
Abstract:
An optimized microwave barrier assembly for use in conjunction with a microwave wood heater. The barrier is configured to allow microwaves to pass therethrough in a TMmode, where a is 0 and b is an integer between 1 and 5. The barrier assembly is also configured to maintain a pressure differential across a window of the barrier assembly. Such a configuration can reduce or eliminate arcing in the barrier assembly, even at low pressures.

Inventors:
David Carl Attride - Jonesborough TN, US
Brad William Overturf - Kingsport TN, US
Mark Robert Shelton - Kingsport TN, US
Jared Moore - Kingsport TN, US
James S. Nelson - Kingsport TN, US

Wood Heater With Enhanced Microwave Dispersing And Tm-Mode Microwave Launchers

US Patent:
2012016, Jun 28, 2012
Filed:
Dec 12, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/323239
Inventors:
David Carl Attride - Jonesborough TN, US
Brad William Overturf - Kingsport TN, US
Mark Robert Shelton - Kingsport TN, US
Assignee:
EASTMAN CHEMICAL COMPANY - Kingsport TN
International Classification:
H05B 6/70
US Classification:

Abstract:
A microwave heater capable of heating a bundle of wood and equipped with an optimized system for introducing microwave energy into the heater is provided. Also provided is an enhanced system for launching and dispersing within the heater. The system uses one or more TMmicrowave launchers to emit microwave energy in the interior of the microwave heater in a TMmode, where a is 0 and b is an integer between 1 and 5. The TMlaunchers can be configured to emit microwave energy through an open outlet that faces generally parallel to the nearest wall of the heater. In certain situations, it can be advantageous to use at least two TMmicrowave launchers having open outlets that face towards one another. In certain situations, it can be advantageous to use at least two TMmicrowave launchers located on generally opposite sides of the microwave heater. In certain situations, the system can also include one or more moving reflectors for dispersing microwave energy emitted from the TMmicrowave launchers.

Microwave Wood Heater With Enhanced Spatial Usage Efficiency And Uniformity Of Heat Distribution

US Patent:
2012016, Jun 28, 2012
Filed:
Dec 12, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/323164
Inventors:
Brad William Overturf - Kingsport TN, US
David Carl Attride - Jonesborough TN, US
Mark Robert Shelton - Kingsport TN, US
Assignee:
EASTMAN CHEMICAL COMPANY - Kingsport TN
International Classification:
H05B 6/80
H05B 6/64
US Classification:
219702, 219756
Abstract:
A commercial scale microwave system that includes a heater having enhanced heat distribution and minimized void space. The enhanced heat distribution can be provided by a unique launcher and/or reflector configuration disposed in the interior of the microwave heater. The microwave system can be operated to prevent the wood from both overheating (which results in scorching) and under-heating (which results in inadequate drying and/or inadequate thermal-modification). The microwave heating system can provide enhanced microwave energy distribution for large quantities of wood, even large quantities of wood heated under vacuum and/or in the presence of one or more chemical reagents.

Wood Heater With Alternating Microwave Launch Locations And Enhanced Heating Cycles

US Patent:
2012016, Jun 28, 2012
Filed:
Dec 12, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/323194
Inventors:
David Carl Attride - Jonesborough TN, US
Brad William Overturf - Kingsport TN, US
Mark Robert Shelton - Kingsport TN, US
Assignee:
EASTMAN CHEMICAL COMPANY - Kingsport TN
International Classification:
H05B 6/68
US Classification:
219718, 219702
Abstract:
An optimized system and process for heating wood using a microwave heater. The optimized system/process directs microwave energy towards different regions of the wood at different times during heating. In certain situations, microwave energy is introduced into the heater using microwave launchers and the system includes one or more microwave switches that control distribution of microwave energy to the microwave launchers so that two adjacent and/or opposing microwave launchers do not simultaneously introduce microwave energy into the heater. The optimized heating process also includes heating wood using a plurality of sequential heating cycles carried out at different conditions. For example, at least one of the heating cycles can be carried out at a lower input rate of microwave energy and/or at a lower pressure than one of the previous heating cycles.
