Ultra-Low Bandwidth Intra-Network Routing Method

US Patent:
6701375, Mar 2, 2004
Filed:
Jan 22, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/235544
Inventors:
W. Clinton Walker - Artesia CA
David C. Bixler - Hermosa Beach CA
Neil G. Siegel - Rancho Palos Verdes CA
Assignee:
Northrop Grumman Corporation - Los Angeles CA
International Classification:
G06F 15173
US Classification:
709243, 709229, 370355
Abstract:
A technique for saving bandwidth that is otherwise used by the transmission of continual administrative message traffic in an intranet. A data packet originating from one host computer ( A) and addressed another ( B) is first sent to a local router ( A), which broadcasts a request for the address of the destination node. Another router ( B) local to the destination host ( B) recognizes the destination host in the data packet and supplies a response with the correct address for the destination host. The broadcast request and its response are transmitted over an auxiliary channel, which avoids depleting the bandwidth capacity of the intranet. When the response is received, the local router ( A) associated with the first host computer A sets up a switched virtual circuit to the other router ( B), after which the data packet and others following it can be delivered efficiently to the destination host ( B). The second router ( B) uses source address information in the first delivered data packet to set up a return path along the same switched virtual circuit, to allow transmission of data packets in both directions. When one of the routers ( A, B) detects an absence of data packet transmissions along the switched virtual circuit for a selected time, the circuit is deactivated.

System And Method For Reliable Multicast Data Distribution Over An Unreliable Packet Switched Network

US Patent:
6952733, Oct 4, 2005
Filed:
Jun 30, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/608614
Inventors:
Brian L. Felsman - Torrance CA, US
David C. Bixler - Hermosa Beach CA, US
Cary H. Nakamura - Hacienda Heights CA, US
Ronald N. Orr - Redondo Beach CA, US
John G. Ringenbach - San Pedro CA, US
Michael F. Allen - Alameda CA, US
Reno Rubio - Westminster CA, US
Assignee:
Northrop Grumman Corporation - Los Angeles CA
International Classification:
G06F015/16
US Classification:
709227, 709220, 709223, 709235, 709203, 709228, 714748
Abstract:
A system, computer program and method to multicast messages to workstations in a network (). The system uses an MDP database table () which stores the parameters used to manage transmission and reception of multicast messages in the network (). An MDP server initialization module () executing on a server reads the parameters from the MDP database table () and initialize an MDP session. The system also uses an MDP client initialization module () to read the necessary parameters in the MDP database table () and initialize an MDP session in a client workstation that receives multicast messages. An MDP server operations module () is used to receive requests to transmit messages and transmit repair packets to a workstation designated as action workstations when a negative acknowledgment is received. An MDP client operations module () receives messages transmitted by the MDP server operations module only transmits a negative acknowledgment to a server upon receipt of an MDP information packet if the workstation is designated as an info only workstation in the MDP information packet.

Power Cycling For A Global Positioning System

US Patent:
7256731, Aug 14, 2007
Filed:
May 27, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/855205
Inventors:
Neil G. Siegel - Rancho Palos Verdes CA, US
David Bixler - Hermosa Beach CA, US
Assignee:
Northrop Grumman Corporation - Los Angeles CA
International Classification:
G01S 5/02
US Classification:
34235706, 34235713
Abstract:
Methods and systems are presented for controlling power cycling in a global positioning system (GPS) assembly. The assembly comprises a power management component that operates to switch a GPS receiver between at least a first mode, in which the receiver is actively receiving almanac and positioning data, and a second mode, in which the receiver does not actively receive data according to a power cycling routine of the receiver. A memory stores a plurality of quanta of almanac data as associated memory blocks, each memory block having an associated status indicating the length of time for which the associated almanac data is expected to be useful. A signal processing component processes a received signal containing at least a portion of a quantum of almanac data and identifies the quantum of almanac data within the received signal. A receiver control adjusts the power cycling routine of the GPS receiver according to the associated status of a memory block associated with the identified quantum of almanac data.

System And Method For Distributed Network Acess And Control Enabling High Availability, Security And Survivability

US Patent:
7278023, Oct 2, 2007
Filed:
Jun 9, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/589747
Inventors:
Neil G. Siegel - Rancho Palos Verdes CA, US
Ronald J. Kozel - Redondo Beach CA, US
David C. Bixler - Hermosa Beach CA, US
Assignee:
Northrop Grumman Corporation - Los Angeles CA
International Classification:
H04K 1/00
G06Q 99/00
US Classification:
713183, 713155, 713181, 380 30, 705 50, 705 56, 705 74
Abstract:
A system, method and computer program that administers access and security on a network having more than one computer system connected thereto. This system, method and computer program has a local password file () which is one-way encrypted and contains user identifications, associated one-way encrypted passwords and associated privileges for each authorized user allowed access to the wide area network (). A user login module () is used to receive a user identification or role and password from a user and login the user when a match is found in the local password file (). A channel monitoring and filtering module () is provided to monitor and receive broadcast or multicast messages within the wide area network () and display the message to the user when the user's associated privileges permit the viewing of the message. This system, method and computer program also has a password management module () to update and insure that all the computers in the network contain the same local password file (). A remote auditing module () is provided to monitor and process anomalous events which may occur on a user's computer.

Automated Configuration Of Internet-Like Computer Networks

US Patent:
6212559, Apr 3, 2001
Filed:
Oct 28, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/181371
Inventors:
David C. Bixler - Hermosa Beach CA
Eufemia P. Hilger - Torrance CA
Jeffrey A. Smith - Albuquerque NM
Mark R. Wittlin - Hermosa Beach CA
Neil G. Siegel - Rancho Palos Verdes CA
Assignee:
TRW Inc. - Redondo Beach CA
International Classification:
G06F 15177
US Classification:
709221
Abstract:
A system and corresponding method of its operation, for configuring a communication network of multiple interconnected computers. The system includes a graphical user interface (36) that facilitates the functions of task organization development (38), platform equipment development (40), address book development (60) and logical network development (42) in a simulated planning phase of operation (30). Using the system, an authorized user performs these development functions to define one or more logical communication networks, and then the system automatically generates specifications for a corresponding physical communication network (44), including management information blocks (74). In a dissemination phase of operation (32), the management information blocks are transmitted (50) to the network computers. In an execution phase of operation (34), the received management information blocks are used to condition (52) the network computers to switch to the new configuration upon receipt of a timing or command signal, when the computers all switch to a new configuration (54) at the same time.
