Disc Brake Friction Pad And Stabilizing Support

US Patent:
4548300, Oct 22, 1985
Filed:
Aug 31, 1983
Appl. No.:
6/528299
Inventors:
David D. Sheill - Farmington Hills MI
Donald J. Davidson - Troy MI
David J. Dettloff - Utica MI
Assignee:
Rockwell International Corporation - Pittsburgh PA
International Classification:
F16D 6500
US Classification:
188 731
Abstract:
In a vehicle disc brake, a friction pad having a radially outer portion supported by a slidably mounted caliper is stabilized by engaging a radially inner portion of the friction pad backing plate with an adjacent depending leg of the caliper.

Lining Wear Indicator For A Drum Brake

US Patent:
5893434, Apr 13, 1999
Filed:
Apr 17, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/839272
Inventors:
Donald G. Walker - Troy MI
David J. Dettloff - Utica MI
David J. Edwards - Shelby Township MI
Roger Gooch - Chatham, CA
Assignee:
Meritor Heavy Vehicle Systems, LLC - Troy MI
International Classification:
F16D 6600
US Classification:
188 111W
Abstract:
A brake lining wear indicator is attached to a drum brake shoe backing plate adjacent the brake lining. The indicator provides a visual gage dimension that assists in the determination of when the brake linings should be replaced. This determination can be made in a very short period of time without requiring a physical measurement of the thickness of the brake lining on each brake shoe.

Sealing Arrangement For Brake Camshaft

US Patent:
6213264, Apr 10, 2001
Filed:
Oct 15, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/730370
Inventors:
Donald G. Walker - Troy MI
David J. Dettloff - Utica MI
David J. Edwards - Shelby Township MI
Assignee:
Meritor Heavy Vehicle Systems, L.L.C. - Troy MI
International Classification:
F16D 5100
US Classification:
188329
Abstract:
An improved camshaft sealing arrangement includes seals at each end of the camshaft housing. In addition, seals and washers are positioned between the camshaft and the slack adjuster connection. The combined seals provide a camshaft that is less likely to require maintenance than prior art camshafts. The seal adjacent the cam contacts an outer periphery of the camshaft housing. This seal also provides a thrust bearing washer surface against the camshaft. The seals between the camshaft and the slack adjuster include washers to properly secure and position the seals, the camshaft and the slack adjuster.

Brake Bracket Assembly

US Patent:
5649612, Jul 22, 1997
Filed:
Apr 3, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/709018
Inventors:
Donald G. Walker - Troy MI
David J. Dettloff - Utica MI
David J. Edwards - Shelby Twp. MI
Assignee:
Rockwell International Corporation - Pittsburgh PA
International Classification:
F16D 5122
US Classification:
188329
Abstract:
An improved bracket member for a vehicle brake system is disclosed. The bracket member has a wing bracket at one end for mounting of a brake actuating mechanism and a mounting plate at the opposite end for connection to the spider of the brake assembly. A hollow tubular member is positioned between the wing bracket and mounting plate and securely affixed to each of them, such as by welding. The tubular member can be of any length depending on the vehicle and applicable clearance space. The mounting plate is secured such as by fasteners to the brake assembly. Also, the tubular member protrudes through the mounting plate and is adapted to be separately securely connected to the brake assembly. The end of the tubular member can be securely attached to an opening in the brake assembly in a number of ways, such as by an interference fit, press fit, wedge fit, compression fit in combination with a spanner nut, pinch joint or the like. The end of the tubular member can also be knurled or splined.

Friction Pad And Support For A Disc Brake

US Patent:
4781272, Nov 1, 1988
Filed:
Jul 8, 1985
Appl. No.:
6/752709
Inventors:
David D. Sheill - Farmington Hills MI
Donald J. Davidson - Troy MI
David J. Dettloff - Utica MI
Assignee:
Rockwell International Corporation - Pittsburgh PA
International Classification:
F16D 6502
US Classification:
188 731
Abstract:
The invention relates to a friction pad for a disc brake and a disc brake assembly in which the friction pads are slidably supported by tabs extending radially outward of the friction pad backing plates on spaced axially extending, stepped edges of an aperture provided to the disc brake caliper. The friction pad tabs include support surfaces or shoulders which are non-symmetrical and permit the tabs to be assembled only when properly oriented.
