SOCIAL ACTION PROJECT (SOCACT) of the Psychology Department of Indiana University South Bend operates in South Bend, IN; Durban, South Africa; and Kigali, Rwanda. The project uses the arts -- drama, dance, “found art”, puppetry, spoken word poetry -- and an asset-based approach to develop service-learning initiatives, believing that people, no matter how disadvantaged, have strengths upon which to build to deal with daily challenges. The sister-sites examine the role of culture in personal and community change. Participation requires an 18-month commitment. Majors are in psychology and related fields; students who travel internationally earn study abroad credits. COMMUNITY DANCE CO-OP that incorporates performance, art, scholars, and laypersons to bring together creative people from around the world -- providing rare exposure for unconventional works or viewpoints. Style: Ballet, lyrical, modern, west Africa (Ghana, Nigeria), north Africa (Egypt, Morrocco, Turkey)
