System And Method For Filtering Temperature Profiles Of A Wheel

US Patent:
8280675, Oct 2, 2012
Filed:
Aug 4, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/535057
Inventors:
Benjamin Paul Church - Blue Springs MO, US
Donald Arndt - Napoleon MO, US
Assignee:
Progress Rail Services Corp - Albertville AL
International Classification:
G01K 13/04
G01K 13/08
G01P 3/06
G01P 3/24
US Classification:
702130, 702136, 702142, 702148
Abstract:
A method for inspecting a rail vehicle includes receiving signals representative of temperatures of a wheel of the rail vehicle and generating a sensed wheel temperature profile of the wheel based on the signals. At least a portion of the sensed wheel temperature profile is representative of the temperatures of the wheel. The method also includes identifying waveform attributes in the sensed wheel temperature profile and designating the sensed wheel temperature profile as at least one of a typical wheel profile and an atypical wheel profile based on the waveform attributes in the sensed wheel temperature profile.

Temperature Detection Systems And Methods For Railway Applications

US Patent:
2017011, Apr 27, 2017
Filed:
Oct 26, 2015
Appl. No.:
14/923085
Inventors:
- Albertville AL, US
Donald J. Arndt - Napoleon MO, US
Steven Conrad Hamerle - Richmond MO, US
Assignee:
Progress Rail Services Corporation - Albertville AL
International Classification:
G01J 5/10
B61K 9/08
B61K 9/04
G01J 5/02
Abstract:
A temperature detection system for railway applications is provided. The system may include at least one infrared (IR) sensing element configured to detect IR signals emitted by a rail or a railcar, and a controller in communication with the at least one IR sensing element. The controller may be configured to receive the IR signals from the at least one IR sensing element, extract IR data corresponding to at least one of a rail and an undercarriage of the railcar from the IR signals, and generate a characteristic thermal profile of at least one of an ambient temperature and a rail temperature based on the IR data.

System And Method For Detecting Wheel Condition

US Patent:
2016010, Apr 14, 2016
Filed:
Oct 10, 2014
Appl. No.:
14/512092
Inventors:
- Albertville AL, US
Donald J. ARNDT - Napoleon MO, US
Roland F. O'CONNELL - Lone Jack MO, US
International Classification:
B61L 27/00
G01J 5/00
B61L 25/02
Abstract:
The present disclosure is directed to a method for detecting a condition associated with a wheel on a train car. The method may include detecting a position of the wheel. The method may also include detecting a position of a rail on which the wheel travels. The method may further include comparing the position of the wheel relative to the position of the rail, and determining a wheel condition based on the comparison.

System And Method For Detecting Wheel Bearing Condition

US Patent:
2016010, Apr 14, 2016
Filed:
Oct 10, 2014
Appl. No.:
14/512185
Inventors:
- Albertville AL, US
Donald J. ARNDT - Napoleon MO, US
Roland F. O'CONNELL - Lone Jack MO, US
International Classification:
G01N 25/72
G01J 5/02
B61F 15/20
Abstract:
The present disclosure is directed to a method for detecting a condition associated with a wheel bearing on a train car. The method may include detecting a size and a location of the wheel bearing. The method may also include detecting a temperature associated with the wheel bearing based at least in part on the size and the location of the wheel bearing. The method may further include determining a wheel bearing condition based on the detected temperature.

Hot Bearing Detection System And Method

US Patent:
2014032, Oct 30, 2014
Filed:
Apr 24, 2013
Appl. No.:
13/869156
Inventors:
- Albertville AL, US
Donald J. ARNDT - Napoleon MO, US
Steven C. HAMERLE - Richmond MO, US
Roland O'CONNELL - Lone Jack MO, US
Assignee:
Progress Rail Services Corporation - Albertville AL
International Classification:
G01J 5/10
US Classification:
374121
Abstract:
The present disclosure is directed to a system and method for identifying a hot bearing. A processor may be configured for receiving a plurality of infrared (IR) signals emitted by a bearing as the bearing passes through a view window being monitored by one or more IR sensing elements positioned to receive IR radiation emitted from a target area of the bearing. The processor may extract IR data from IR signals emitted from an area within the target area of the bearing defined by a narrow window extending along a longitudinal axis for a length corresponding to substantially an entire length of the bearing. The processor may also establish a characteristic thermal profile from the extracted IR data, the characteristic thermal profile exhibiting identifiable boundaries of an area of interest on the bearing. The processor may compare temperatures of the bearing within the area of interest to a threshold, and produce an alarm signal if temperatures of the bearing within the area of interest exceed the threshold.

Automated Calibration Method For A Dragging Equipment Detector

US Patent:
2014011, May 1, 2014
Filed:
Nov 1, 2012
Appl. No.:
13/666415
Inventors:
- Albertville AL, US
DONALD JOHN ARNDT - Napoleon MO, US
STEVEN CONRAD HAMERLE - Richmond MO, US
Assignee:
PROGRESS RAIL SERVICES CORPORATION - Albertville AL
International Classification:
G01L 5/00
G08B 21/00
G06F 19/00
US Classification:
340665, 702104
Abstract:
A method for calibrating a moving object impact detector is disclosed. A controller may receive input indicative of movement of an impact element from a first position to a second position. The controller may also receive an activation signal corresponding to the movement of the impact element. The controller may further receive input indicative of instructions to correlate the activation signal with the movement of the impact element. The controller may selectively set the activation signal as a reference signal for the detector, with the reference signal being indicative of an impact the moving object impact detector is set to detect.
