Dual Seal Barrier Fluid Leakage Control Method Utilizing Linearly Displaceable Member

US Patent:
5906374, May 25, 1999
Filed:
Aug 11, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/909458
Inventors:
Donald P. Arbuckle - Denver CO
International Classification:
F16J 900
US Classification:
277304
Abstract:
A method for controlling leakage of a barrier fluid from a dual seal assembly of equipment, such as a pump or valve, employs a barrier fluid supply arrangement connected to a barrier fluid chamber of the dual seal assembly, a pressure intensifier mechanism coupled to a process fluid chamber and the barrier fluid chamber of the dual seal assembly and being operable to maintain the pressure of the barrier fluid at a preset level above the pressure of the process fluid in response to the absence of barrier fluid leakage from the dual seal assembly, and a pressure monitoring and control arrangement coupled to the barrier fluid supply arrangement and the pressure intensifier mechanism and being operable to detect and measure the decrease of the barrier fluid pressure below the preset level and to compensate therefor by actuating the barrier fluid supply arrangement to supply barrier fluid to the barrier fluid chamber until the barrier fluid pressure has increased above the preset level. The pressure monitoring and control arrangement is also operable to calculate and provide a readout of both the average and instantaneous leakage rate.

Fluidic Transformer Apparatus With Feedback

US Patent:
4505115, Mar 19, 1985
Filed:
Sep 8, 1981
Appl. No.:
6/299868
Inventors:
Donald P. Arbuckle - Denver CO
International Classification:
B60T 1120
US Classification:
60562
Abstract:
An applied pressure or volume change is intrinsically transformed into an output pressure or volume change which is related to the magnitude of the relative input quantity and a ratio of effective areas of pressure application surfaces of a plurality of pistons in a fluidic transformer. The surfaces of the pistons are interconnected by fluid communication paths in a predetermined manner such that pressures existing in each of the communication paths relate only to the input pressure relative to the reference pressure and a ratio of the effective surface areas of the pistons, and such that the pistons are in a balanced force equilibrium state. The pressures present in the communication paths can be operatively applied on opposite sides of fluid sealing elements of a plurality of sealing elements arranged in serial order to operatively seal between the applied pressure and the reference pressure. Each of the individual seal elements of a seal assembly is required to withstand only an increment of the overall pressure differential. The fluidic transformer maintains the incremental pressure across each seal element, and all seal elements in the assembly effectively resist what can be a very substantial difference between the input and reference pressures.

Fluidic Transformer With Sealed Cylinder And Check Valves In Pistons

US Patent:
4922719, May 8, 1990
Filed:
Oct 26, 1987
Appl. No.:
7/112663
Inventors:
Donald P. Arbuckle - Denver CO
International Classification:
F04B 500
US Classification:
60562
Abstract:
An improved fluid transformer which is capable of controlling the position of the operating pistons within the apparatus so that pressure equilibrium is maintained and the movements of the pistons are limited to predetermined locations within the cylinders. The transformer is capable of operating in a contaminated environment by purging unwanted fluid contamination from the internal workings of the transformer. Dynamic piston and cylinder seals are positioned such that destructive pressure forces are counteracted by opposite frictional forces during operation, thereby allowing the seals to remain effective at high pressures for long periods of time.

Rotary Drill Bit And Method Of Forming Bore Hole

US Patent:
4174759, Nov 20, 1979
Filed:
Sep 19, 1977
Appl. No.:
5/834656
Inventors:
Donald P. Arbuckle - Golden CO
International Classification:
E21B 718
US Classification:
175 67
Abstract:
Means for emitting high-pressure jets of fluid such as water, and mechanical rock breaking wheels, are positioned on a rotary drill bit for cooperatively cutting an axially extending bore hole through earth material. A center core opening is cut into the drill face material of the bore hole by a jet of fluid crossing the axis of the bore hole at an acute angle. The material of the drill face annularly surrounding the center core opening is removed by cutting concentric slots in the material and by applying radially inward directed force for breaking each ring defined by the slots cut. At any given axial position or level, the slots are cut and the rings are broken in sequence from the radially innermost position to the radially outermost position of the bore hole. Removal of the drill face material occurs simultaneously at different axial positions or levels in the bore hole; the center core opening is first opened by the center jet cutting at the most axially advanced position, an inner annular segment of drill face material surrounding the center core is simultaneously removed at intermediate axial positions, and an outer annular segment of drill face material surrounding the inner annular segment is simultaneously removed at the least axially advanced positions. The fluid jet emitting means cut slots in the inner and outer annular segments.

Integrated Barrier Fluid Sealing Apparatus With Visual Volume Indicator

US Patent:
6161835, Dec 19, 2000
Filed:
Aug 16, 1999
Appl. No.:
9/375313
Inventors:
Donald P. Arbuckle - Denver CO
International Classification:
F16J 1556
US Classification:
277320
Abstract:
An integrated barrier fluid sealing apparatus includes an annular pressure intensifier surrounding a shaft of an operational device and defining a chamber extending around and along the shaft and containing a barrier fluid. The integrated apparatus also includes an annular sealing arrangement mounted to the pressure intensifier and surrounding the shaft so as to provide a seal around the shaft such that the pressure intensifier and sealing arrangement cooperate to prevent leakage of process fluid along the shaft to an external environment. A visual barrier fluid volume indicator mechanism also is provided which cooperates with operation of the pressure intensifier to visually indicate the volume of barrier fluid in the chamber of the pressure intensifier.
