Filed:
Apr 1, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/816569
Inventors:
Arman Gasparyan - New Providence NJ, US
Timofei Nikita Kroupenkine - Warren NJ, US
Joseph Ashley Taylor - Springfield NJ, US
Donald Weiss - Cresskill NJ, US
Assignee:
Lucent Technologies Inc. - Murray Hill NJ
International Classification:

US Classification:
200182, 200199, 200214, 200233, 335 78, 335 57
Abstract:
A liquid electrical switch is disclosed that uses a plurality of droplets of conducting liquid to form an electrical path. In a first embodiment, at least a first voltage differential is used to create a separation distance between two droplets. The droplets are illustratively contained within a housing and surrounded by an immiscible, insulating liquid. In this embodiment, the at least a first voltage differential draws at least a portion of at least one of the droplets away from a second droplet, thus preventing electrical current from flowing from the at least one droplet to the second droplet. In another embodiment, the at least a first voltage differential is changed in a way such that at least one liquid droplet is made to come into contact with a second droplet, thus creating an electrical path between the two droplets.

Fuse For Projected Ordnance

US Patent:
7216589, May 15, 2007
Filed:
Jan 27, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/766449
Inventors:
David John Bishop - Summit NJ, US
Herbert R. Shea - Cormondrèche, CH
Donald P. Weiss - Cresskill NJ, US
Assignee:
Lucent Technologies Inc. - Murray Hill NJ
International Classification:
F42C 19/00
US Classification:
102201
Abstract:
An ordnance fuse apparatus is described that uses electrical and mechanical, and optical devices. The ordnance fuse apparatus includes a controller to control an optical switch and a laser to detonate an explosive charge of the ordnance. Other embodiments include an accelerometer and/or spin detector for detecting that the ordnance has been fired and an optical detector for detecting the proper operation of the laser and a position sensor for detecting correct positioning of the optical switch. Another embodiment includes a microlens to focus the laser optical signal onto the ignitor. In yet other embodiments, the explosive charge is detonated either by ignition of an ignitor or by a shock wave from the ignitor. The resulting ordnance fuse apparatus has significantly reduced size and improved performance and safety.

Reversibly-Activated Nanostructured Battery

US Patent:
7749646, Jul 6, 2010
Filed:
Mar 18, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/803641
Inventors:
Marc Scott Hodes - New Providence NJ, US
Paul Robert Kolodner - Hoboken NJ, US
Timofei Nikita Kroupenkine - Warren NJ, US
Alan Michael Lyons - New Providence NJ, US
Mary Louise Mandich - Martinsville NJ, US
Joseph Ashley Taylor - Springfield NJ, US
Donald Weiss - Cresskill NJ, US
Assignee:
Alcatel-Lucent USA Inc. - Murray Hill NJ
International Classification:
H01M 10/50
US Classification:
429112, 429 62, 429118, 977948
Abstract:
A battery having a nanostructured battery electrode is disclosed wherein it is possible to reverse the contact of the electrolyte with the battery electrode and, thus, to return a battery to a reserve state after it has been used to generate current. In order to achieve this reversibility, the nanostructures on the battery electrode comprise a plurality of closed cells and the pressure within the enclosed cells is varied. In a first embodiment, the pressure is varied by varying the temperature of a fluid within the cells by, for example, applying a voltage to electrodes disposed within said cells. In a second illustrative embodiment, once the battery has been fully discharged, the battery is recharged and then the electrolyte fluid is expelled from the cells in a way such that it is no longer in contact with the battery electrode.

Abstract:
A battery includes a plurality of closed cells disposed in a predetermined feature pattern on at least a first surface of an electrode. Each of the closed cells has an inner surface. The battery also includes a plurality of cell electrodes. Each of the cell electrodes is disposed along a portion of the inner surface of a respective one of the closed cells in the plurality of closed cells.

Low Cost Thermocouple Apparatus And Methods For Fabricating The Same

US Patent:
4631350, Dec 23, 1986
Filed:
Dec 30, 1983
Appl. No.:
6/567377
Inventors:
Damon Germanton - Kennelon NJ
Donald Weiss - Englewood NJ
International Classification:
H01L 3528
US Classification:
136225
Abstract:
A thermocouple consists of a first thin layer of metal disposed on a mylar sheet. The metal layer is then covered with a varnish by employing a printing process which prints spaced apart apertures on the metal layer indicative of a hot junction and a reference junction terminal. Another top metal layer is deposited upon the varnish layer in a line grating pattern to cover one hole in each pair to thus form a hot junction by connecting the top metal layer to the first layer via the hole. The other aperture forms one terminal of the reference junction. The metal layers are extremely thin as deposited by a vapor evaporation process and hence the thermocouple exhibits a rapid response to temperature change. The method of fabrication of the devices enables one to provide mass produced units at extremely low cost.

Lighting Device With Dynamic Bulb Position

US Patent:
4339788, Jul 13, 1982

US Classification:
362157
Abstract:
A portable, self-contained lighting device with improvements in bulb positioning, switching, and electrical contact wherein (a) the bulb position changes axially depending on the presence or absence of the power source; (b) the rotating switch is positioned essentially directly above the bulb; and (c) the electrical contact strip is preloaded against the switch assembly in the "off" position and has an over-travel capacity of up to about 50% with a compensating flexible knee capable of changing by up to about 40. degree.

Electronic Thermometer And Associated Apparatus

US Patent:
4536851, Aug 20, 1985
Filed:
Oct 22, 1982
Appl. No.:
6/436022
Inventors:
Damon Germanton - Kinnelon NJ
Charles Germanton - Summit NJ
Donald Weiss - Englewood NJ
International Classification:
G01K 108
G01K 720
US Classification:
364557
Abstract:
An electronic thermometer is particularly adapted for use as a fever thermometer and employs a unique temperature sensor configuration comprising a platinum temperature sensing resistor and tantalum nitride reference resistor both mounted on the same substrate. The resistors are selectively coupled to the input of a dual ramp integrator forming part of an analog to digital converter. Digital control circuitry causes the sensing resistor to be coupled to the input of the integrator during a first mode and causes the reference resistor to be coupled to the input during a second mode. Included in the digital circuitry is a first sensor memory and a second reference memory. These memories have stored therein a digital number indicative of the response of both resistors at a predetermined temperature obtained during initial calibration of the sensor and thermometer. The stored values are compared during the respective mode with the accumulated count in a clock counting circuit. If a match occurs the electronics advance the sequence to enable any excess count occurring during the second mode to be monitored and eventually displayed as manifesting the measured temperature.
