Magnetostrictive Position Transducer With Band Passed Mode Converter Output For Rejecting Mechanical Noise

US Patent:
5367255, Nov 22, 1994
Filed:
Dec 2, 1991
Appl. No.:
7/800974
Inventors:
David S. Nyce - Apex NC
Wade D. Peterson - Morrisville NC
Theophile R. Lerebours - Cary NC
International Classification:
G01B 714
US Classification:
32420713
Abstract:
A magnetostrictive linear position transducer of the type having an acoustic magnetostrictive waveguide for propagating acoustic pulses generated by the interaction of a permanent magnetic field with a periodic excitation magnetic field. The mode convertor for converting acoustic pulse into an electrical signal indicative of the passage of an acoustic pulse propagated pat the mode convertor location along the waveguide includes a passband type filter for improving the detectability of the acoustic signal.

Lawrence J. Russell - Knightdale NC
Assignee:
MTS Systems Corporation - Eden Prairie MN
International Classification:
G01B 714
G01F 2330
US Classification:
32420713
Abstract:
A magnetostrictive position measuring instrument for generating square-wave-in-quadrature output pulses indicating magnet position along a waveguide.

System And Method For Measuring The Absolute Position Of One Body Which Is Constrained To Move With Respect To Another Body

US Patent:
5115195, May 19, 1992
Filed:
Jan 22, 1991
Appl. No.:
7/644273
Inventors:
Wade D. Peterson - Morrisville NC
Joachim Hellwig - Ludenscheid, DE
Rainer Heuckelbach - Ludenscheid, DE
Assignee:
MTS Systems Corporation - Minneapolis MN
International Classification:
G01B 714
US Classification:
32420713
Abstract:
A system and method for measuring the absolute position of one body which is constrained to move with respect to another body includes a plurality of magnetic identification units, which are adapted to be mounted in a predetermined absolute position on a first body. Each of the magnetic identification units has an identity characteristic that is associated therewith. A Sensor having a transducer is adapted to be fixed to a second body. The transducer is adapted to sense (a) the relative distance of at least one of the magnetic identification units with respect to a benchmark location which is fixed relative to the transducer and the second body. It is also equipped to sense the identity characteristic of the sensed unit. A controller is provided to receive data representing the relative distance and identity characteristic of the sensed unit from the sensor. The controller identifies the sensed unit from the identity characteristic, recalls the predetermined absolute position of the sensed unit and determines an absolute position for the benchmark location by summing the predetermined absolute position of the sensed unit with the relative distance of the sensed unit to the benchmark position.

Modular Magnetostrictive Displacement Sensor Having A Waveguide Protected By A Material With A Thermal Coefficient Of Expansion The Same As The Waveguide

US Patent:
5313160, May 17, 1994
Filed:
Feb 3, 1992
Appl. No.:
7/829443
Inventors:
Michael L. Gloden - Apex NC
Wade D. Peterson - Morrisville NC
Lawrence J. Russell - Knightdale NC
Assignee:
MTS Systems Corporation - Eden Prairie MN
International Classification:
G01B 726
US Classification:
32420713
Abstract:
A modular magnetostrictive displacement sensor is disclosed having a waveguide of magnetostrictive material extending from a first housing and protected by a member of fiber reinforced composite material. There is circuitry in the first housing for generating electrical pulses along the waveguide and a converter for generating an electrical signal in response to a torsion pulse in the waveguide caused by a magnet disposed proximate the waveguide when the electrical pulse passes the magnet position. In one embodiment the waveguide and its protective member is received within a second housing. One or more magnets may be mounted within the second housing or externally on or near the second housing for movement to the waveguide. Alternatively the sensor may be used without the second housing.
