Abstract:
A flow guide configured for insertion in a cavity defined between an outer housing and a nested inner motor housing of a fluid driven tool. The flow guide defines a longitudinal axis and includes at least two longitudinal portions disposed parallel to the longitudinal axis and defining a longitudinal channel therebetween, and a rib being substantially circumferential and connecting the longitudinal portions at points defining a plane substantially transverse to the longitudinal axis. The rib defines a recess that permits fluid communication in the longitudinal channel across the rib.

Intermediate And Assembly Assistance Components For Fluid Driven Tools And Tools Incorporating The Same

US Patent:
7770661, Aug 10, 2010
Filed:
Jan 3, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/619507
Inventors:
James R. Young - Randolph NJ, US
Douglas E. Pyles - Bethlehem PA, US
Michael A. Youhouse - Davidson NC, US
Brian R. Roache - Paramus NJ, US
Assignee:
Ingersoll-Rand Company - Montvale NJ
International Classification:
E21B 19/16
US Classification:
173218, 173168, 173169
Abstract:
A fluid driven tool has an outer housing and an inner motor housing nested in the outer housing and defining a cavity therebetween that has a first end with a first exhaust passageway and a second end with a second exhaust passageway. The inner motor housing has a motor chamber with an inlet port for a fluid driven motor and fluid inlet, and an inlet manifold disposed in the cavity. The inlet manifold has a recessed portion with a surrounding seal that engages the inner motor housing and connects the fluid inlet to the at least one inlet port of the inner motor housing. An inner surface of the outer housing and an outer surface of the inner motor housing have portions that mate upon nesting the inner motor housing in the outer housing and provide reinforced areas for clamping regions of the outer housing located over the reinforced areas.

Spindle Locking Assembly

US Patent:
8011444, Sep 6, 2011
Filed:
Apr 3, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/418205
Inventors:
Douglas E. Pyles - Bethlehem PA, US
Randi J. Young - Randolph NJ, US
Assignee:
Ingersoll Rand Company - Montvale NJ
International Classification:
E21B 3/00
US Classification:
173164, 173171, 408124, 188 69
Abstract:
A locking assembly for the spindle of a tool includes a locking member, a biasing member interconnected with the locking member, and a collar surrounding a portion of the spindle. The spindle includes a spindle slot that receives the locking member to lock the spindle with respect to the tool housing. The collar may be rotated into an unlocked position in which the biasing member holds the locking member out of engagement with the spindle slot. The collar may also be rotated into a locked position in which a cam surface in the collar acts on the biasing member to apply a biasing force on the locking member toward engagement with the spindle slot. The biasing member may deflect to accommodate rotation of the collar into the locked position with the spindle slot not aligned with the locking member.

Power Tools With An Internal Metal Housing Attached To An Outer Composite Sleeve

US Patent:
2013031, Nov 28, 2013
Filed:
Mar 13, 2013
Appl. No.:
13/798794
Inventors:
Randi Jane Young - Randolph NJ, US
Douglas Eliot Pyles - Bethlehem PA, US
International Classification:
B25F 5/02
B24B 41/00
B24B 23/00
US Classification:
451344, 173171, 173168, 173218, 29428
Abstract:
Hand-held power tools with an external composite sleeve having a forward portion and a rearward portion and defining an axially extending cavity. The power tools also include an internal metal housing having a substantially cylindrical body with a plurality of circumferentially spaced apart, longitudinally-extending front posts that project radially outward from the cylindrical body. The metal housing resides in the composite sleeve. The front posts can be closely spaced to or abut an inner surface of the forward end (e.g., front cap) of the sleeve. In a front exhaust configuration, the front posts and sleeve cooperate to define a plurality of circumferentially spaced apart gap spaces, a respective gap space bounded by adjacent posts, an outer surface of the cylindrical body and the inner surface of the sleeve.

Grinding Tools With Guards

US Patent:
2014008, Mar 20, 2014
Filed:
Sep 18, 2013
Appl. No.:
14/030582
Inventors:
Gregory Paul Albert - Nazareth PA, US
Douglas Eliot Pyles - Bethlehem PA, US
Randi Jane Young - Randolph NJ, US
Assignee:
Ingersoll-Rand Company - Davidson NC
International Classification:
B24B 55/05
US Classification:
451451
Abstract:
In at least one illustrative embodiment, a grinding tool may comprise a housing including a mount, a shaft extending from the mount along a drive axis, where the shaft is configured to support a grinding wheel for rotation about the drive axis, and a guard coupled to the mount. The guard may comprise a central ring extending around the mount, a shroud extending radially outward from the central ring along a first portion of a circumference of the central ring, and a standoff coupled to a second portion of the circumference of the central ring. The standoff may extend from the central ring along a direction substantially parallel to the drive axis such that the standoff limits rotation of the guard about a tipping axis that is substantially perpendicular to the drive axis.

Torque Sensing Automatic Shut-Off And Reset Clutch For Screwdrivers, Nutsetters And The Like

US Patent:
5156244, Oct 20, 1992
Filed:
Oct 31, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/608985
Inventors:
Douglas E. Pyles - Bryan OH
Phil D. Thorp - Bryan OH
Ward W. Harvey - Bryan OH
Assignee:
The ARO Corporation - Bryan OH
International Classification:
F16D 4320
B25B 2314
US Classification:
192 0034
Abstract:
An improved torque control and fluid shut-off mechanism for a fluid operated tool includes a driving clutch member and a driven bit holder connected by ball bearings retained by the clutch member which engages in pockets in the bit holder. The pockets include a specific ramp construction which insures that the threshold torque level of the tool in the forward direction is less than the threshold level in the reverse direction.

Automatic Fluid Torque Responsive Shut-Off Mechanism For An Air Tool

US Patent:
4772186, Sep 20, 1988
Filed:
Feb 18, 1986
Appl. No.:
6/831133
Inventors:
Douglas E. Pyles - Bryan OH
David N. Carey - Bryan OH
Assignee:
The Aro Corporation - Bryan OH
International Classification:
F01C 2112
G03D 1310
US Classification:
418 43
Abstract:
An improved torque control mechanism for a rotary vane, air motor tool includes acceleration and speed responsive slidable elements positioned in grooves that lie in a plane transverse to the spin axis of the motor and which form an angle with the radii extending from the spin axis. The elements cooperate with a cam plate which operates a fluid supply valve to close off air supply to the tool whenever torque of the tool causes the speed of the motor to decrease below a threshold level. A bypass valve and passage is manually operable to initiate operation of the air motor. An auxiliary low volume, low pressure valve and passage permits an operator to provide minor adjustments of the orientation of the output shaft of the tool. For reverse operation, the speed and acceleration control is eliminated by operation of a reverse operation control mechanism.
