Two Cartons Joined As A Single Unit Separable Into Two Single Cartons

US Patent:
6823989, Nov 30, 2004
Filed:
Apr 17, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/417606
Inventors:
Duane Curtis Wilder - Chesterfield VA
Frederick Ried Bruchbacher - Powhatan VA
Claudette M. Calder - West Chester PA
Joe Rush - Midlothian VA
Lenny Lee Harris - Richmond VA
Steven L. Brown - Montpelier VA
Assignee:
Philip Morris USA Inc. - New York NY
International Classification:
B65D 8510
US Classification:
206264, 206271
Abstract:
A dual cigarette carton has overall dimensions compatible with commercially available tax-stamping machinery as well as structural features that enable subsequent separation of the dual carton into two five-pack cartons. The dual cigarette carton comprises first and second cartons each having relatively long front and back walls, an interconnecting bottom wall and narrow end walls. First and second cover flaps are connected to the front wall of the first and second cartons along upper edges thereof. The first and second cover flaps overlie one another when the cartons are positioned in back-to-back relationship. A perforated fold line extends between each cover flap and the front wall to which it is connected, and each perforated fold line includes an unperforated portion at one end thereof for strengthening connection between the cover flaps and the front walls as the cartons with cigarette packs therein pass through the tax-stamping machinery. The other end of each perforated fold line includes a slit to facilitate separation and removal of the flaps from the front walls of the cartons thereby producing two five pack cartons.

Multi-Stage Heater Plates For Sealing And Shrinking Overwrap

US Patent:
2006013, Jun 22, 2006
Filed:
Dec 22, 2004
Appl. No.:
11/019576
Inventors:
Duane Wilder - Chesterfield VA, US
William Rech - Midlothian VA, US
Assignee:
Philip Morris USA Inc. - Richmond VA
International Classification:
B65B 53/02
US Classification:
053442000, 053557000
Abstract:
An improved cigarette package has been achieved using multistage heating plates on the ends of package wrapping. The first stage of the heating plate preheats the wrapping, the second stage activates adhesive along edges of the wrapping, the third stage seals the wrapping and the fourth stage shrinks the wrapping around the cigarette packs.

Cigarette Hardpack Having Rounded Corners And Lid Retaining Flaps

US Patent:
5341925, Aug 30, 1994
Filed:
Jul 30, 1993
Appl. No.:
8/099324
Inventors:
J. Jerome Fleenor - Midlothian VA
Duane C. Wilder - Chesterfield VA
Assignee:
Philip Morris Incorporated - New York NY
International Classification:
B65D 8510
US Classification:
206268
Abstract:
A cigarette pack includes a pack portion and a lid portion hinged thereto, and an inner frame disposed within the pack portion and projecting upwardly beyond an upper end of the pack portion. The vertical corners of the cigarette pack are smoothly rounded. Front rounded corners of the inner frame are formed with integral retention flaps which project laterally outwardly so as to bear frictionally against the sidewalls of the lid portion when the lid portion is in a closed state. Each sidewall of the lid portion includes inner and outer panels. The inner panel includes a front edge located behind the respective retention flap so as to avoid making contact therewith when the lid is pivoted between open and closed states.

Apparatus And Method For Forming Hinged Top Cigarette Box

US Patent:
5205807, Apr 27, 1993
Filed:
Mar 12, 1992
Appl. No.:
7/851227
Inventors:
Jonah Adams - Chesterfield VA
John Tomanovits - Richmond VA
Duane C. Wilder - Chesterfield VA
Assignee:
Philip Morris Incorporated - New York NY
International Classification:
B31B 134
B31C 100
US Classification:
493125
Abstract:
An apparatus for forming a hinged top cigarette box having a cross-section with one or more arcuate surfaces from a one piece blank, the apparatus comprising a mandrel that engages the one piece blank along an edge, and which mandrel rotates to wrap the blank around the mandrel to form a hinged top cigarette box having inner and outer walls. Alternative embodiments of the apparatus may include either an ultrasonic device or wet adhesives to secure the inner and outer walls of the box in proper relation. A method is provided for forming a dual layer hinged top cigarette box having a cross-section with one or more arcuate surfaces wherein a box blank is engaged along one end and then rotated and secured so that the resulting box has its inner and outer layers fixed in proper relation.

Cigarette Packs With Retention Cuts To Facilitate Consistent Lid Closure

US Patent:
5129513, Jul 14, 1992
Filed:
Nov 22, 1991
Appl. No.:
7/796350
Inventors:
Wallace M. David - Richmond VA
Duane C. Wilder - Chesterfield VA
Assignee:
Philip Morris Incorporated - New York NY
International Classification:
B65D 566
US Classification:
206265
Abstract:
A box-like cigarette pack having tab-like retention members formed in the walls of one of the innerframe and lid. The retention members function to help keep the lid completely closed by producing interference between the lid and the innerframe. The retention members are formed with cuts made at an angle to the plane of the wall in which they are formed. These cuts form pointed edges which are on opposite faces of the wall. Once the retention member is pushed out of the plane of the wall, the pointed edge of the surrounding wall retains the retention member outside the plane of the wall.

Packaging Blank And Container Made Therefrom

US Patent:
5924627, Jul 20, 1999
Filed:
Aug 7, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/908317
Inventors:
Duane C. Wilder - Chesterfield VA
Michael J. Pollio - Richmond VA
Assignee:
Philip Morris Incorporated - Richmond VA
International Classification:
B65D 542
US Classification:
2291821
Abstract:
A packaging blank is scored with several substantially parallel laterally spaced apart score lines adjacent the intended location of a rounded edge on the container produced from the blank. The score lines are formed on the inside surface of the blank which places the score lines inside the container formed from the blank. When the blank is bent into shape at the rounded edges, a portion of the total deflection is absorbed by each score line whereby the resulting container edge is a gradual curve rather than a single sharp crease. Placing the score lines on the inside of the formed container results in opposing faces of the container being planar and parallel to one another.

Method Of Making A Cigarette Package

US Patent:
5526559, Jun 18, 1996
Filed:
Mar 9, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/207848
Inventors:
John J. Fleenor - Midlothian VA
J. Lee Gregory - Richmond VA
John E. Tindall - Midlothian VA
Duane C. Wilder - Chesterfield VA
Assignee:
Philip Morris Incorporated - New York NY
International Classification:
B23P 1100
US Classification:
29434
Abstract:
A method for forming an aluminum cigarette package includes the step of cutting elliptical blanks from an aluminum sheet and shaping the blanks by progressive drawing operations into a lid and a body. The lid and body are joined by a flexible label that serves as a hinge that allows the lid to be pivoted relative to the body to open and close the pack. In an alternative embodiment of the invention, a drawn aluminum body is provided with a flat cap member having an aperture and a resealable closure. The invention includes a metal package made by the method of the invention.
