Closure With Outer Driver Having Movable Segments Forming Manual Engagement Member

US Patent:
5579932, Dec 3, 1996
Filed:
Jun 7, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/488531
Inventors:
Edward J. Drozd - Lake Hiawatha NJ
Vincent Comitini - Cranford NJ
Assignee:
Lincoln Mold and Dye Corporation - Roselle NJ
International Classification:
B65D 5514
US Classification:
215207
Abstract:
A tamper-indicating, child resistant closure for a threaded bottle includes an inner cap and an outer driver telescoped over the inner cap. The inner cap includes a top wall having spaced apart upstanding ribs. The outer driver includes a top wall having a pair of top wall segments hinged for pivotal movement to, and being spaced apart from each other by a spacing rib also forming part of the top wall of the driver. Each of the top wall segments initially is secured to contiguous sections of the outer driver by frangible, tamper-indicating tabs, and the top wall segments are moved from a generally horizontal position to a generally vertical position after the tamper-indicating tabs have been broken to form a driving section in the top wall of the driver. This driving section then is directed into the space between the upstanding ribs associated with the top wall of the inner cap by moving the inner cap and outer driver axially toward each other. In this orientation, the upstanding top wall segments also can be gripped to provide leverage in rotating the driver and inner cap in a counter-clockwise direction to unscrew the closure from the threaded neck of a bottle.

Tamper-Evident Closure With Angled Breakaway Tabs

US Patent:
5033632, Jul 23, 1991
Filed:
Jun 8, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/535435
Inventors:
Daniel Mattia - Union NJ
Edward J. Drozd - Lake Hiawatha NJ
Vincent Comitini - Westfield NJ
Assignee:
Lincoln Mold and Die Corporation - Roselle NJ
International Classification:
B65D 4134
US Classification:
215252
Abstract:
A tamper-evident closure includes a cap having an interior, threaded peripheral skirt, a tamper-evident ring disposed below the lower edge of the skirt and a plurality of elongate bridge members interconnecting the tamper-evident ring to the cap. Each bridge member includes a lower end forming a lower juction with the ring an upper end thinner than the lower end forming an upper juction with a surface of a recess formed in the skirt. Each bridge member is designed to break at the upper end thereof when the closure is rotated in a direction to remove it from the container, and each bridge member is inclined upwardly at an acute angle to the ring from the lower to the upper junction, in the direction in which the cap is required to be rotated to remove it from the container. Each of the bridge members has a stepped configuration for providing a bridge surface closely spaced to and facing the surface of the recess at which the upper junction is formed for engaging this latter surface when the cap is being rotated to secure the closure to the container.

Hand Held Metered Spray Dispenser

US Patent:
4771769, Sep 20, 1988
Filed:
Dec 20, 1982
Appl. No.:
6/451311
Inventors:
Manfred K. Hegemann - South Nyack NY
Edward J. Drozd - Lake Hiawatha NJ
Assignee:
Schering Corporation - Kenilworth NJ
International Classification:
A61M 1100
US Classification:

Abstract:
A hand held metered spray dispenser including a housing, a nozzle on said housing, a fluid container in said housing, an orifice in said housing, and a converting means pivotal to said housing for converting a manual force applied through the orifice along a manual force axis to a force moving said container means along a pumping axis transverse to the manual force axis to dispense a metered amount of fluid through said nozzle along a dispensing axis substantially coincidental with said dispensing axis.

Tamper-Evident Closure And Container

US Patent:
4489843, Dec 25, 1984
Filed:
Mar 17, 1983
Appl. No.:
6/476147
Inventors:
Edward J. Drozd - Lake Hiawatha NJ
Assignee:
Captive Plastics, Inc. - Piscataway NJ
International Classification:
B65D 4134
US Classification:
215252
Abstract:
Tamper-evident closures include a threaded cap and a tamper-evident ring removably connected to each other by break-away tabs adapted to break when the cap is rotated in a direction to remove it from a cooperating container. The cap and ring have cooperating surfaces for transmitting closing rotational movement of the cap to the ring to thereby rotate the cap and ring together during closing of the container to thereby prevent separation of the cap from the ring at the break-away tabs. The ring further includes at least one locking surface adapted to engage a corresponding surface on a container to prevent the ring from rotating in the opening direction of rotation, whereby rotation of the closure to open it will cause relative movement between the cap and ring to sever the break-away tabs. A method of molding the cap, tamper-evident ring and break-away tabs as a single member also constitutes a part of the invention, as well as the particular container constructions adapted to cooperate with the closures.

Child Resistant Package

US Patent:
4844284, Jul 4, 1989
Filed:
Sep 14, 1988
Appl. No.:
7/244756
Inventors:
Edward Drozd - Lake Hiawatha NJ
Michael Lutz - Watchung NJ
Assignee:
Captive Plastics, Inc. - Piscataway NJ
International Classification:
B65D 4304
US Classification:
220281
Abstract:
A child-resistant package includes a tray with a compartment therein for receiving articles to be packaged, and a cover member slideably received on the tray and movable relative to the tray between opened and closed positions. The cover member is a flexible member having a top wall and peripheral sidewalls. The peripheral sidewalls of the cover member overlie peripheral sidewalls of the tray and latching members on the sidewalls of the cover member and tray cooperate to retain the cover member in a closed position relative to the tray. The latching members are released by applying an inward pressure to the top wall of the cover member, to thereby bias the sidewalls of the cover member outwardly relative to the sidewalls of the tray. An abutment member on the tray prevents such inward deflection of the top wall of the cover member in the event that a child bites down on the package in the forward region thereof. Preferably a peripheral skirt is provided on the tray for overlying lower marginal surfaces of the peripheral walls of the cover member, to thereby prevent a child from wedging his or her teeth between the peripheral walls of the cover member and tray, and thereafter prying the cover member off of the tray.

Method Of Forming Tamper Evident Closures

US Patent:
4547332, Oct 15, 1985
Filed:
Aug 7, 1984
Appl. No.:
6/638607
Inventors:
Edward J. Drozd - Lake Hiawatha NJ
Assignee:
Captive Plastics, Inc. - Piscataway NJ
International Classification:
B29C 1702
US Classification:
264339
Abstract:
The method of forming a tamper-evident closure having a threaded cap and a tamper-evident ring removably connected to each other by break-away tabs. The method includes the steps of molding the threaded cap and tamper-evident ring as an integral unit in a side-by-side relationship to each other and with the break-away tabs integrally connecting them. A retaining lug is also molded on the ring and has a substantially inwardly directed surface. An outwardly directed shelf and cam means are also molded on the cap. After the molding operation, the integrally molded part is removed from its mold and the tamper-evident ring and the threaded cap are moved relative to each other with the break-away tabs acting as a hinge to enable the cap and tamper-evident ring to be brought into substantial vertical alignment with each other while the inwardly directed surface of the retaining lug is snapped over the shelf to hold the cap and ring in alignment. The closure can then be secured onto a cooperating container so that the rotation of the cap to remove it causes the surface means to cause the cap to rotate with respect to the tamper-evident ring so that the tabs break and the ring remains on the container but unsecured to the cap, thereby providing evidence of the opening of the closure.

Liquid Product Dispenser

US Patent:
4516697, May 14, 1985
Filed:
Sep 22, 1982
Appl. No.:
6/421545
Inventors:
James R. Dreps - Kinnelon NJ
Edward J. Drozd - Lake Hiawatha NJ
Assignee:
Captive Plastics Inc. - Piscataway NJ
International Classification:
B65D 3700
US Classification:
222212
Abstract:
The present invention provides a hand dispenser for a liquid product that includes a resilient closed container mounted upon a base. The container, which has a discharge port connected to a dispensing orifice for the liquid product, is movable between a first position, which closes the discharge port and makes the dispenser adapted for traveling, shipment, and the like. The container also has a second position, which opens the discharge port and places the dispenser in the dispensing mode. The dispenser, when in the dispensing mode, is manually operated by squeezing the container, which dispenses a portion of the liquid product; upon return of the resilient container to its original shape, the level of the liquid drops, and a lesser pressure is created in the air pocket over the liquid product, thus causing atmospheric air to press back any movement of liquid product toward the dispensing orifice.
