Nanostructures Containing Pna Joining Or Functional Elements

US Patent:
2003021, Nov 20, 2003
Filed:
Feb 21, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/370685
Inventors:
Paul Hyman - Newburyport MA, US
Edward Goldberg - Newton MA, US
International Classification:
C12P021/06
C07K014/00
US Classification:
435/068100, 530/350000
Abstract:
Nanostructures are made that include at least one species of assembly unit comprising a peptide nucleic acid (PNA). PNA assembly units may have one or two PNA joining elements. In addition, the PNA assembly units may contain structural elements, and/or other functional or joining elements. The nanostructure is suitably prepared using a staged assembly method. In this method, a nanostructure intermediate having at least one unbound joining element is contacted with an assembly unit having a plurality of different joining elements. None of the joining elements of the assembly unit can interact with itself or with another joining element of the same assembly unit. However, one of the joining elements of the assembly unit can interact with the unbound joining element of the nanostructure intermediate, so that the assembly unit is non-covalently bound to the nanostructure intermediate to form a new nanostructure intermediate for use in subsequent cycles. Unbound assembly units are removed and the cycles is repeated for a sufficient number of cycles to form a nanostructure. In one specific method, the complementary joining elements in at least one cycle are PNA joining elements.

Method For Manufacture Of Nanostructures Using Staged-Assembly

US Patent:
2004003, Feb 26, 2004
Filed:
Feb 21, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/371073
Inventors:
Edward Goldberg - Newton MA, US
International Classification:
C07K014/005
C12P021/06
US Classification:
530/350000, 435/068100
Abstract:
Nanostructures formed from a plurality of structural units in which the positions of the structural units relative to each other are established in a defined geometry, are formed by sequentially adding structural units to a growing structure to build up the nanostructure. The nanostructure includes two or more species of protein structural units, and each structural unit is added to the growing structure in a separate structural unit-addition step. Structural units not incorporated in the growing structure is removed at the end of each structural unit-addition step. Each species of structural unit has the ability to assemble non-covalently with the growing nanostructure to which it is added but cannot self-assemble with other structural units of the same species.

Magnetic Protein Nanosensors And Methods Of Use

US Patent:
2008009, Apr 24, 2008
Filed:
Sep 12, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/854200
Inventors:
Edward Goldberg - Newton MA, US
Robert Guertin - Boston MA, US
Timothy Harrah - Cambridge MA, US
Assignee:
TUFTS UNIVERSITY - Boston MA
International Classification:
C07K 2/00
G01N 27/00
C12N 9/00
US Classification:
204556000, 530402000, 435183000, 977796000
Abstract:
Nanometer-scale sensors useful in the detection of biological and chemical entities are formed from a protein rod body portion , a magnetic particle affixed to the protein rod body portion ; and an analyte binding moiety disposed on the protein rod body portion at a location remote from the magnetic particle , The analyte binding moiety specifically binds to the analyte to form a sensor-analyte complex. The protein rod body portion may be formed from a tail fiber protein from a T even bacteriophage or a derivative thereof. Interaction of the analyte with the sensor will change the overall shape and size, and thus the ability of the sensor to move within a liquid sample in response to an applied magnetic field. Interaction can therefore be observed as a change in magnetic susceptibility or in relaxation time compared to that of a sensor in the absence of the analyte.

Assay For Beta-Lactam Antibiotics

US Patent:
4762782, Aug 9, 1988
Filed:
May 16, 1985
Appl. No.:
6/734535
Inventors:
Edward B. Goldberg - Brookline MA
James T. Park - Weston MA
Assignee:
Micromol Corporation - Boston MA
International Classification:
G01N 33535
G01N 33543
G01N 33566
G01N 33577
US Classification:
435 7
Abstract:
An improved assay for measuring the quantity of Beta-lactam antibiotics, particularly valuable for measuring penicillin in milk. The assay includes the covalent-attachment of a penicillin to a penicillin-binding-protein bound to a matrix, the highly selective attachment of an antibody to such a conjugate, and the detection and measurement of the quantity of resulting antibody-complex material as a direct measure of the amount of penicillin in the milk being tested.

Microcomputer Control Of Stepper Motor Using Reduced Number Of Parts

US Patent:
4847544, Jul 11, 1989
Filed:
Mar 28, 1988
Appl. No.:
7/173960
Inventors:
Edward Goldberg - Wayland MA
Assignee:
NEC Electronics Inc. - Mountain View CA
International Classification:
H02P 800
US Classification:
318696
Abstract:
A stepper motor control circuit having a reduced number of discrete components is provided by using an on-chip analog to digital converter of a single chip microcomputer to control the waveforms of chopped winding currents. Four power MOSFET's, four diodes and two sense resistors can be added to the circuitry of a board populated by the single chip microcomputer to implement a full step motor controller. The addition of a holding current circuit frees the computer for servicing other tasks when the motor is idle.

Reservoir For Enclosing And Retrieving Body Specimens

US Patent:
5352184, Oct 4, 1994
Filed:
Mar 12, 1992
Appl. No.:
7/850655
Inventors:
Mark C. Goldberg - Boston MA
Lev Melinyshyn - Buffalo Grove IL
Alexander Poloyko - Morton Grove IL
Edward M. Goldberg - Glencoe IL
Assignee:
UreSil Corporation - Skokie IL
International Classification:
A61F 200
US Classification:
600 37
Abstract:
A specimen-receiving receptacle apparatus for use in minimally invasive surgical procedures can be remotely opened and closed from a proximal end of the apparatus, outside of the patient. The apparatus includes a belt having substantial longitudinal rigidity so that the belt can be forced longitudinally into the surgical site to open the specimen-retrieval receptacle from a remote end of the apparatus. The belt can be longitudinally pulled out of the surgical site to close the specimen-retrieval receptacle from outside of the patient. The belt is relatively flexible or easily deformable along an open end of the receptacle without deforming substantially out of the plane of the open receptacle end. This is achieved by aligning the belt with respect to the open end such that a large dimension of the belt is aligned transverse to the plane of the open receptacle end. In a preferred embodiment, the belt is extruded from nylon and has an elliptical cross-sectional shape.
