Shield For Grass Trimmer

US Patent:
4200978, May 6, 1980
Filed:
Dec 6, 1978
Appl. No.:
5/966879
Inventors:
Edward A. Irelan - Columbia MO
Robert L. Bartlett - Columbia MO
John W. Walch - Columbia MO
Assignee:
McGraw-Edison Company - Elgin IL
International Classification:
H01G 306
US Classification:

Abstract:
A grass trimmer includes a housing having a lower base wall from which extends a hub member of a predetermined height coupled to a motor encased in the housing, which motor drives the hub member rotatably. A cutting line element is attached to the hub member. A rim extends outwardly from the housing about the perimeter of the base wall. A first rim portion is of a height greater than the hub member and includes first and second spaced mounting ears extending therefrom toward the hub member. A protective shield designed for mounting on the housing in spaced relation from the base wall, is planar and of a similar shape to the base wall. The shield includes first and second tab and shoulder assemblies located for cooperation with the ears on the rim portion of the housing. Joining the last mentioned assemblies and respective ears attaches the shield to the trimmer housing. A resilient locking lever arm provided on the shield cooperates with a locking rib formed on the rim portion of the housing upon engagement of the tab and shoulder assemblies and mounting ears to removably lock the shield to the housing.

Convertible Portable Electric Tool

US Patent:
3959878, Jun 1, 1976
Filed:
Apr 2, 1975
Appl. No.:
5/564280
Inventors:
Edward A. Irelan - Columbia MO
David W. Dorheim - Baltimore MD
William Frederick Robotham - St. Charles IL
Assignee:
McGraw-Edison Company - Elgin IL
International Classification:
B26B 1902
B26B 1906
US Classification:
30220
Abstract:
This invention teaches a convertible portable electric tool having a common power housing and different operating tool output pieces which can be releasably secured to said power housing without the need of any tools. Each of the tool output pieces has a stationary element and a movable element supported by the stationary element. The power housing has an exposed drive element which can cooperate with and drive the movable element when the statonary element is properly positioned relative to the housing. The stationary element in turn is sized to cooperate with the housing to cover the exposed drive element and be accurately positioned and held in place against the housing. Flexible fingers cantilevered integrally from the housing have free end flexture parallel to the stationary element, and further have projections on the finger ends that interlock with the positioned stationary element to hold it operatively in place relative to the housing. Exposed grip areas on the flexible fingers allow for manually flexing of the fingers to lock and release the tool output piece.
