Floating-Point Multiplier For De-Normalized Inputs

US Patent:
6697833, Feb 24, 2004
Filed:
Jan 18, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/764646
Inventors:
Christopher A. Krygowski - Lagrangeville NY
Eric M. Schwarz - Gardiner NY
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
G06F 744
US Classification:
708503
Abstract:
A method is disclosed for efficiently multiplying de-normalized floating-point numbers without necessarily incurring additional delay over the multiplication of normalized numbers, wherein the de-normalized numbers are initially assumed to be normalized. The method includes providing multiplier and multiplicand floating-point numbers, each defining a fraction and an exponent; encoding the multiplier fraction; multiplexing the multiplier fraction; and multiplying the multiplier fraction by the multiplicand fraction to form a first set of partial products. The method further includes detecting a zero-value multiplier exponent characteristic indicative of de-normalization; computing a last partial product according to the value of the multiplier exponent characteristic; detecting a zero-value multiplicand exponent characteristic indicative of de-normalization; selecting a de-normalized multiplicand correction term according to the detected multiplicand exponent characteristic and the value of the multiplier fraction; and adding each of the first set and the last partial products to the de-normalized multiplicand correction term to form a final product.

Floating Point Unit For Multiple Data Architectures

US Patent:
6829627, Dec 7, 2004
Filed:
Jan 18, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/764595
Inventors:

Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
G06F 1500
US Classification:
708204, 708200, 708160
Abstract:
A computer system with a floating point unit (âFPUâ) for supporting multiple floating point architectures is provided. The system includes a format converter for converting between the internal data flow format and the architected external data types by multiplexing the exponent and system includes a floating point unit having an internal data-flow according to an internal floating point format for performing floating point operations. The internal format has a number of exponent bits and a number of fraction bits sufficient to support each of the floating point architectures. The format converters the exponent value of each floating point architecture into the internal floating point format so that data operand of any of the floating point architectures point is converted into the internal floating point format for subsequent arithmetic operations, and the result of the operation is converted back into the original floating point architecture for output.

A method for creating precise exceptions including checkpointing an exception causing instruction. The checkpointing results in a current checkpointed state. The current checkpointed state is locked. It is determined if any of a plurality of registers require restoration to the current checkpointed state. One or more of the registers are restored to the current checkpointed state in response to the results of the determining indicating that the one or more registers require the restoring. The execution unit is restarted at the exception handler or the next sequential instruction dependent on whether traps are enabled for the exception.

Multifunction Hexadecimal Instructions

US Patent:
7254698, Aug 7, 2007
Filed:
May 12, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/435982
Inventors:
Eric M. Schwarz - Gardiner NY, US
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
G06F 7/38
US Classification:
712222, 708501
Abstract:
A new zSeries floating-point unit has a fused multiply-add dataflow capable of supporting two architectures and fused MULTIPLY and ADD and Multiply and SUBTRACT in both RRF and RXF formats for the fused functions. Both binary and hexadecimal floating-point instructions are supported for a total of 6 formats. The floating-point unit is capable of performing a multiply-add instruction for hexadecimal or binary every cycle with a latency of 5 cycles. This supports two architectures with two internal formats with their own biases. This has eliminated format conversion cycles and has optimized the width of the dataflow. The unit is optimized for both hexadecimal and binary floating-point architecture supporting a multiply-add/subtract per cycle.

Method And Apparatus For Prefetching Branch History Information

US Patent:
7493480, Feb 17, 2009
Filed:
Jul 18, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/197714
Inventors:
Philip G. Emma - Danbury CT, US
Klaus J. Getzlaff - Schonaich, DE
Allan M. Hartstein - Chappaqua NY, US
Thomas Pflueger - Leinfelden, DE
Thomas R. Puzak - Ridgefield CT, US
Eric Mark Schwarz - Gardiner NY, US
Vijayalakshmi Srinivasan - New York NY, US
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
G06F 9/00
US Classification:
712240
Abstract:
A two level branch history table (TLBHT) is substantially improved by providing a mechanism to prefetch entries from the very large second level branch history table (L2 BHT) into the active (very fast) first level branch history table (L1 BHT) before the processor uses them in the branch prediction process and at the same time prefetch cache misses into the instruction cache. The mechanism prefetches entries from the very large L2 BHT into the very fast L1 BHT before the processor uses them in the branch prediction process. A TLBHT is successful because it can prefetch branch entries into the L1 BHT sufficiently ahead of the time the entry is needed. This feature of the TLBHT is also used to prefetch instructions into the cache ahead of their use. In fact, the timeliness of the prefetches produced by the TLBHT can be used to remove most of the cycle time penalty incurred by cache misses.

System And Method For Performing Decimal Floating Point Addition

US Patent:
7519645, Apr 14, 2009
Filed:
Feb 10, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/055231
Inventors:
Steven R. Carlough - Poughkeepsie NY, US
Wen H. Li - Poughkeepsie NY, US
Eric M. Schwarz - Gardiner NY, US
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
G06F 7/485
US Classification:
708505
Abstract:
A method for performing a decimal floating point operation. A first operand including a first coefficient and a first exponent is received. The method also includes receiving a second operand that includes a second coefficient and a second exponent. An operation associated with the first operand and the second operand is received. The operation is an addition or a subtraction. Three concurrent calculations are performed on the first operand and the second operand. The first concurrent calculation includes applying the operation to the first operand and the second operand based on a first assumption that the first exponent is equal to the second exponent. The applying the operation based on the first assumption results in a first result and includes utilizing a two cycle adder. The second concurrent calculation includes applying the operation to the first operand and the second operand based on a second assumption that an absolute difference between the first exponent and the second exponent is less than or equal to a number of leading zeros in the coefficient of the operand with the larger exponent. The applying the operation based on the second assumption results in a second result and includes utilizing the two cycle adder.
