Shielded Electrical Connector

US Patent:
5863222, Jan 26, 1999
Filed:
Jun 3, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/868202
Inventors:
Forrest Irving Kinsey - Harrisburg PA
John Raymond Shuey - Millersville PA
John Mark Myer - Mechanicsburg PA
Assignee:
The Whitaker Corporation - Wilmington DE
International Classification:
H01R 13648
US Classification:
439607
Abstract:
A shielded connector assembly (10) includes a header (20), a shield plate (30), and a pin guide (40). The shield plate (30) is formed of a metallic material and is mounted to header (20) by action of clips (34a) which engage clip engaging surfaces (24a) of header (20). Pin guide (40) is mounted to header (20) by action of dovetailed sections (46) which are slidingly disposed in respective dovetailed recesses (26) formed in header (20).

Electrical Connector Having Press-Fit Contacts For Circuit Board Mounting

US Patent:
5571033, Nov 5, 1996
Filed:
Feb 21, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/395394
Inventors:
Forrest I. Kinsey - Harrisburg PA
Clifford J. Wampler - Lebanon PA
Assignee:
The Whitaker Corporation - Wilmington DE
International Classification:
H01R 13422
US Classification:
439595
Abstract:
An electrical connector (20) having a housing block (24) with a plurality of passageways (50) having tapered portions (56) and straight portions (58) into which are inserted respective contact terminals (34). The passageways and the contact terminals are so designed that the contact terminals are press-fit into the passageways and displace dielectric material of the housing block to provide a "seal" which prevents solder flux from wicking up the passageways. In addition, the contact terminals are formed with a longitudinal knurl (38) to prevent rotation of the contact terminals after insertion. Still further, each contact terminal is formed with a frusto-conical retention collar (42) having a rearward facing surface (66) which, upon exiting a passageway, abuts against a recessed stop ledge (64) formed in the housing block to prevent the subsequent removal of the contact terminal from the housing block. The housing block (24) also includes channels (60) that aid in removal of solder flux.

Cam Slide Electrical Connector

US Patent:
6200164, Mar 13, 2001
Filed:
Feb 4, 2000
Appl. No.:
9/497417
Inventors:
Galen Martin - Troy MI
Anthony Robert Hirko - Summerfield NC
Forrest Irving Kinsey - Harrisburg PA
Assignee:
Tyco Electronics Corporation - Wilmington DE
International Classification:
H01R 1340
US Classification:
439595
Abstract:
An electrical connector assembly includes a plug connector (2) and a mating connector or printed circuit board header (94) that are mated with the assistance of a cam slide (4). Channels in which the cam slide (4) shifts are formed by top rails (26) that are staggered relative to bottom rails (30) so that the rails can be formed by straight pull mold tooling without side pulls. The cam slide (4) can be inserted from opposite ends of the plug connector housing (20). At least some of the power terminals (86) are located separately from signal terminals (88) so that they can be separately sealed. A combined terminal position assurance member and seal retainer (74) is latched to the plug connector housing on the inside of power terminal cavities (52) so as not to interrupt the sealing integrity.

Low Profile Electrical Connector

US Patent:
6116938, Sep 12, 2000
Filed:
Aug 28, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/920246
Inventors:
John Mark Myer - Millersville PA
Forrest Irving Kinsey - Harrisburg PA
Assignee:
The Whitaker Corporation - Wilmington DE
International Classification:
H01R 13627
H01R 1352
US Classification:
439353
Abstract:
The electrical connector (2) is a sealed electrical connector including terminals (4) located in two rows in a connector housing (6). In addition to the terminals (4) and the housing (6), the connector (2) also includes a wire seal cap (8) that is mounted on the rear of the housing (6). The cap (8) includes a latch (10). A wire seal (12) is positioned between the rear face of the connector housing (6) and the wire seal cap (8). A ring seal (14) maintains sealing integrity between the sealed electrical connector (2) and a mating connector or tab connector (16). The wire seal (12) engages wires (18) attached to the terminals (4) at the rear of the connector (2). The connector housing also includes a shroud (20) through which the latch (10) extends, and the latch (10) engages the mating connector (16) to latch the two connectors in mating engagement. Since the latch (10) is molded as part of the seal cap (8) and not part of the housing (6), the height of the shroud (20), beneath which the shroud extends, can be reduced so that the overall height of the connector is less than for a conventionally shrouded connector.

Electrical Connector Having A Secondary Lock

US Patent:
5913697, Jun 22, 1999
Filed:
Nov 26, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/979467
Inventors:
John Mark Myer - Millersville PA
John Raymond Shuey - Mechanicsburg PA
Forrest Irving Kinsey - Harrisburg PA
Assignee:
The Whitaker Corporation - Wilmington DE
International Classification:
H01R 1340
US Classification:
439595
Abstract:
The invention comprises an electrical connector having a body with an inner member with contact receiving passages therein. The contact receiving passages have latching arms which can be deflected into channels. The inner member has latching grooves disposed along sides thereof. A secondary locking member has latching arms to be received along the sides of the inner member within the latching grooves. The secondary locking member has cross arms. The secondary locking member has a first latched position wherein contacts can be received within the contact receiving passages and a second latched position wherein the cross arms are received within the channels thereby locking the contacts therein.

Cam Slide Electrical Connector

US Patent:
6155850, Dec 5, 2000
Filed:
Sep 25, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/160400
Inventors:
Galen Martin - Troy MI
Anthony Robert Hirko - Summerfield NC
Forrest Irving Kinsey - Harrisburg PA
Assignee:
The Whitaker Corporation - Wilmington DE
International Classification:
H01R 1362
US Classification:
439157
Abstract:
An electrical connector assembly includes a plug connector 2 and a mating connector or printed circuit board header 94 that are mated with the assistance of a cam slide 4. Channels in which the cam slide 4 shifts are formed by top rails 26 that are staggered relative to bottom rails 30 so that the rails can be formed by straight pull mold tooling without side pulls. The cam slide 4 can be inserted from opposite ends of the plug connector housing 20. At least some of the power terminals 86 are located separately from signal terminals 88 so that they can be separately sealed. A combined terminal position assurance member and seal retainer 74 is latched to the plug connector housing on the inside of power terminal cavities 52 so as not to interrupt the sealing integrity.

Two-Piece Electrical Terminal

US Patent:
2008008, Apr 3, 2008
