A communication system includes a voice subsystem and a multimedia subsystem. The voice subsystem couples to the PSTN and services a voice communication received by the communication system from a caller. The multimedia subsystem couples to the voice subsystem, supports multimedia communications and provides a multimedia interface to the caller upon receipt of the voice communication from the caller. When the call originates from a phone that supports multimedia communications, the multimedia subsystem directs the multimedia interface to the phone but, when the call originates from a phone that does not supports multimedia communications, the multimedia interface is directed to an associated multimedia enabled device. The voice subsystem provides call processing and routing functions as well as messaging functions and extended services. The multimedia subsystem includes an information posting subsystem and an information access subsystem that allow callers to post information and to access information.

Telephone System Integrated Text Based Communication Processes To Enhance Access For Tdd And/Or Tty Devices

US Patent:
6078650, Jun 20, 2000
Filed:
May 30, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/865698
Inventors:
Frederick W. Hansen - Murphy TX
Assignee:
Nortel Networks Corporation - Montreal
International Classification:
H04M 1100
US Classification:
379 52
Abstract:
A process of handling a TTY call from a calling party to a called party receives a TTY call to the called party; checks a database of at least one party capable of receiving the TTY call from the called party to determine whether the called party is able to receive the TTy call; and if the called party is in the database, then prompts the calling party to leave a message; receives the message; stores the message; and notifies the called party that the calling party has left the message. In addition, the process may also check a second database of at least one party capable of receiving the TTY call from the called party and if the called party is in the database, then prompt the calling party to leave a second message; receive the second message; store the second message; and notify the called party that the calling party has left the second message. The database contains parties having access to a text server and wherein the second database contains parties having access to a voice mail system, the voice mail system capable of handling the TTY call.

Telephone System Integrated Text Based Communication Apparatus And Systems To Establish Communication Links To Tdd And/Or Tty Devices And Other Telephone And Text Server Systems

US Patent:
6002749, Dec 14, 1999
Filed:
May 30, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/865943
Inventors:
Frederick W. Hansen - Murphy TX
Darrell L. Jennings - Plano TX
Assignee:
Nortel Networks Corporation - Montreal
International Classification:
H04M 1100
US Classification:
379 52
Abstract:
An integrated text based TTY system comprises a telephone network, a private branch exchange ("PBX"), a voice mail system, and a text server, all in communication with one another. The telephone network and the PBX are adapted to receive a TTY call from a calling party from a TTY device to a called party. The PBX is also in communication with a telephone to which the called party has access. The called party has access to the terminal device that is in communication with the text server via a network. The text server uses a identification information associated with the TTY call that identifies the called party, so that the text server can check a database of individuals able to receive the TTY call to determine whether the called party is in the database and is able to receive the TTY call. If the called party is in the database and is able to receive the TTY call, the text server notifies the called party that the TTY call is waiting, and, if the called party desires, then the text server establishes an interactive communication link between the calling party and the called party via the network and the terminal device. The text server may also check a voice mail database of all parties having access to the voice mail system and, if the called party is not in the database, then the text server instructs the voice mail system to check the voice mail database to determine whether the called party is in the voice mail database and is able to receive the TTY call.

Telephone Apparatus, Systems, And Processes To Enhance Access For Tdd And/Or Tty Devices

US Patent:
5943395, Aug 24, 1999
Filed:
May 30, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/865949
Inventors:
Frederick W. Hansen - Murphy TX
Assignee:
Northern Telecom Limited - Montreal
International Classification:
H04M 1100
US Classification:
379 52
Abstract:
A process of transferring a message transferred by a TTY call from a calling party to a called party comprising the following steps: (a) receiving the TTY call in a port adapted to receive the TTY call; (b) recognizing the TTY call as conforming to TTY standards and translating the TTY call to ASCII; (c) initiating a request for the calling party provide identification information to identify the called party and to leave a message and converting the request to conform to the TTY standards to create a converted response, and sending the converted response to the calling party, (d) receiving the identification information to identify the called party and the message, converting the identification information and the message to ASCII to create a converted message; identifying a voice mail box accessible by the called party with the identification information in a voice mail system; (e) converting the message into an audio message; and storing the audio message in the voice mail box. An integrated text based system comprises a telephone network, a private branch exchange, a voice mail system, and a text server. The telephone network receives a TTY call from a calling party using a TTY device to a called party.

Telephone System Integrated Text Based Communication Apparatus And System To Enhance Access For Tdd And/Or Tty Devices

US Patent:
5940475, Aug 17, 1999
Filed:
May 30, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/865699
Inventors:
Frederick W. Hansen - Murphy TX
Assignee:
Northern Telecom Limited - Montreal
International Classification:
H04M 1100
US Classification:
379 52
Abstract:
An integrated text based TTY system comprises a telephone network, a private branch exchange, a voice mail system, and a text server. The telephone network is adapted to receive a TTY call from a calling party from a TTY device, which is external to said integrated text based TTY system, to a called party. A private branch exchange is in communication with the telephone network and adapted to receive the TTY call from the telephone network. A voice mail system is in communication with the private branch exchange. A text server is in communication with the private branch exchange to receive the TTY call. The text server is also in communication with the voice mail system. The text server receives identification information to identify the called party, so that the text server can check a database of individuals able to receive the TTY call to determine whether the called party is in the database and if the called party is in the database then the text server signals the called party that the TTY call from the calling party has been made. The private branch exchange is also in communication with the text server via a modem and a first communication path extending from the private branch exchange to the modem and the modem is in communication with the text server to receive the TTY call which is routed to the text server by the private branch exchange. The modem recognizes the TTY call as conforming to TTY standards and, if necessary, converts the TTY call into ASCII.

Tty Telephone Display And Related Processes Systems And Apparatus

US Patent:
