Terrain-Engaging Cleat For Traction Enhancement

US Patent:
6374518, Apr 23, 2002
Filed:
Jul 10, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/902962
Inventors:
Charles Bently Warner - San Francisco CA
Assignee:
Tubbs Snowshoe Company LLC - Stowe VT
International Classification:
A43B 500
US Classification:
36124, 36 77, 36 59 R
Abstract:
Crampon and snowshoe combinations are disclosed, wherein the crampon or terrain-engaging cleat can be a traditional ice crampon used on a rigid and essentially unbending boot, or a soft boot cleat which engages only the front portion of the boot, forward of the heel, permitting boot flexing. The snowshoe has in a toe or ball area a registry plate configured to engage with the crampon, preferably between depending teeth or other structure of the crampon, and preferably with a self-centering feature as the crampon is lowered down onto the registry plate. Once the cleat or crampon is fully engaged down against the plate, it is substantially locked in position against relative shifting or rotation, and lifting of the boot off the back of the crampon is restricted by clips or straps, preferably flexible straps extending up from the registry plate and securable to brackets or hooks on the crampon device. Specific configurations of cleats or crampons are also disclosed, for use with or without snowshoes.

Snowshoe Buckle

US Patent:
6401310, Jun 11, 2002
Filed:
Feb 2, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/777009
Inventors:
Charles Bentley Warner - San Francisco CA, 94117
Daniel T. Emerson - Berkeley CA, 94705
Nathan J. Messmer - San Francisco CA, 94110
International Classification:
A44B 1120
US Classification:
24179, 24265 BC, 36122, D11216
Abstract:
A strap buckle, particularly for use in a snowshoe binding, operates somewhat as a cam lock buckle but instead of exhibiting pinching force on the strap which increases with increased back-pulling force, the buckles spring loaded lever engages a nipple or protrusion more deeply into a hole in the hole-punched strap as back-pulling force increases. The buckle lever has a strong downward bend, so that a front end of the lever tucks the strap tail against the users boot and aids in the releasing of the lever from the strap.

Showshoe With Cam Lock Buckle

US Patent:
6526629, Mar 4, 2003
Filed:
Jan 28, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/494324
Inventors:
Charles Bentley Warner - San Francisco CA
Daniel T. Emerson - Palo Alto CA
Assignee:
Tubbs Snowshoe Company LLC - Stowe VT
International Classification:
A43C 1100
US Classification:
24 71R, 24 68 A, 24 68 CD, 24 69, 24170, 36125
Abstract:
A snowshoe having a boot harness assembly includes one or more cam lock type buckles through which webbing straps are tightened. The cam lock buckle allows low friction pulling of the tail end of a strap for tightening, while providing a positive lock against slippage in the opposite direction. A particular configuration of cam lock buckle is disclosed by which friction in tightening the strap is reduced further.

Lace Binding For A Snowshoe

US Patent:
6694645, Feb 24, 2004
Filed:
Jan 4, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/039167
Inventors:
Nathan J. Messmer - San Francisco CA
Charles Bentley Warner - San Francisco CA
Deirdre OMara - San Francisco CA
Luca Innocente - Crocetta del Montello, IT
Franco Bastasin - Crocetta del Montello, IT
Giancarlo Pozzobon - Crocetta del Montello, IT
Assignee:
Winterquest LLC - Stowe VT
International Classification:
A43B 500
US Classification:
36122, 36124, 36125
Abstract:
A binding for a snowshoe has a base secured to a footbed connected to the snowshoe frame, and a tongue piece above the footbed, connected at front to the footbed in a flexible hinge and positioned to engage the top of a users boot, from the toe to the arch. At each side of the binding, between the tongue piece and the footpad, lacing extends in zig-zag configuration from the front to the back of the binding, passing through lacing eyes and slidable through the eyes with relatively low friction, for drawing the tongue piece down onto the boot. At the back of the binding, a heel strap is positioned to extend around the heel of the foot, and this heel strap is connected to the lacing at both sides, such that when the heel strap is tightened via slip-through type adjustment buckles, this pulls on the lacing to tighten the lacing at both sides and snug the tongue piece down against the boot, firmly engaging the boot in the binding. The left and right buckles can be attached to loops in the lacing to double the rate of drawing the lacing as compared to movement of the buckles. In one embodiment the binding has a laterally oriented connecting bracket at bottom for connection to a suspension strap on a snowshoe, as this bracket has a bias tilt angle such that the pitch of the binding and boot will be biased toe-down about 10Â to 25Â.

Snowshoe With Two Degrees Of Rotational Freedom

US Patent:
6898874, May 31, 2005
Filed:
Jan 4, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/039166
Inventors:
Daniel T. Emerson - Berkeley CA, US
Rudy Lucas Samuels - Los Angeles CA, US
Charles Bentley Warner - San Francisco CA, US
Assignee:
K2 Snowshoes, Inc. - Carlsbad CA
International Classification:
A43B005/00
US Classification:
36122, 36124, 36125
Abstract:
A snowshoe has a pivoted mounting on its boot harness, for rotation about a pitch axis for a first degree of freedom in movement of the user's boot relative to the snowshoe; and provision for a second degree of freedom of motion along a roll axis, allowing the user's boot to tip from side to side, particularly for uneven or sidehill terrain. In both axes the boot preferably is spring-biased toward a neutral position. At the same time, freedom of movement is restricted and essentially prevented between the boot and snowshoe relative to a third axis, the yaw or vertical axis. Several different structural arrangements are disclosed in several types of snowshoes, for achieving the second degree of freedom.

Terrain-Engaging Cleat For Traction Enhancement

US Patent:
6256908, Jul 10, 2001
Filed:
Apr 20, 1999
Appl. No.:
9/294517

Abstract:

Snowshoe For Receiving Crampons

US Patent:
5901471, May 11, 1999
Filed:
Jan 21, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/009948
Inventors:
Charles Bently Warner - San Francisco CA
Assignee:
Atlas Snowshoe Company - San Francisco CA
International Classification:
A43C15/06
US Classification:
36124
Abstract:
A snowshoe is configured to receive a boot-mounted crampon, such that the crampon teeth serve as the front and rear cleats for the snowshoe. Two openings are included in the snowshoe deck, at toe and heel, the toe harness assembly including a plate configured to receive the front portion of a crampon such that the crampon is inserted into the snowshoe with the toe tipped down, then the heel is rotated down to lock the crampon to the plate. A single strap is included to secure the boot to the harness at a location behind the ball of the foot. In a preferred embodiment, left and right portions of the tooth assembly near the toe of the crampon fit closely within a clearance at each side of the plate, so that as the crampon is placed into the plate the crampon becomes located and registered to a certain position, rigidly holding the crampon on the plate against rotation about a vertical axis.
