Manufacture Of Thin-Film Magnetic Heads

US Patent:
6045431, Apr 4, 2000
Filed:
Dec 23, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/996935
Inventors:
Sergei Cheprasov - Niles IL
Gordon J. Grosslight - Westcliffe CO
Assignee:
Speedfam Corporation - Chandler AZ
International Classification:
B24B 4910
US Classification:
451 5
Abstract:
Improved manufacture of thin-film magnetic heads includes a piezoelectric driven actuator for bending row tools used in the mass manufacture of magnetic heads. The actuator is independent of the row tool and includes a lever arm which structurally deflects when driven by the piezoelectric element, converting physical displacement of the piezoelectric element to a force supplied to the row tool, through a portion of the lever arm arranged to undergo deflection. Arrays of piezoelectric actuators are also disclosed for individual adjustment of each magnetic head component of a row being polished.

Bearing Assembly For Wafer Planarization Carrier

US Patent:
5791978, Aug 11, 1998
Filed:
Nov 14, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/751014
Inventors:
Joseph V. Cesna - Niles IL
Gordon J. Grosslight - Westcliffe CO
Chris Karlsrud - Chandler AZ
Assignee:
Speedfam Corporation - Chandler AZ
International Classification:
B24B 704
B24B 2900
US Classification:
451388
Abstract:
An apparatus for engaging a workpiece against a polishing surface in a first embodiment includes a lower plate member, the lower plate member includes a hub on a top surface. An upper plate member includes a seat disposed on a bottom surface. The hub fits within the seat to form an air bearing between the lower and upper plate members. A structure supplies air to the air bearing and a flexure spring is disposed between the upper and lower plate members. The lower plate member includes vacuum holes in its bottom surface which are connected to a vacuum source which creates a vacuum pressure for holding the workpiece against the lower plate. A retainer ring including a flange is positioned about the outer edge surface of the lower plate member for holding the workpiece in place on the bottom surface of the lower plate member. A detachable pressure plate is connected to the lower plate member by at least one quick release apparatus which utilizes a locking pin secured to the pressure plate and configured to fit through a bore in the lower plate member. In a second embodiment, the upper plate member has recesses in its top and bottom surfaces.

Row Tool

US Patent:
5607340, Mar 4, 1997
Filed:
Jun 6, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/467074
Inventors:
Stanley A. Lackey - Moorpark CA
Gordon Grosslight - Moorpark CA
International Classification:
B24B 4900
US Classification:
451 5
Abstract:
An adjustable row or transfer tool is disclosed herein compensating for row bow or distortion during a lapping process on a surface so as to establish uniform and substantially precise throat heights for a plurality of thin film transducers carried on a row of magnetic head sliders. To provide for adjustment, the body of the row tool is a double series of relief slots provided in an edge marginal region immediately adjacent to the surface intended to be lapped. The first series includes elongated relief slots disposed between square shaped slots extending across the length of the tool while the second series includes several relief slit openings across the tool length above the first series to terminate in cavities at each end. Bend holes in the tool body are located between the first and second series of relief slots and slits. Adjustment may be achieved by mounting the row tool to a closed loop lapping system.

Row Tool Balance And Bow Correction Apparatus

US Patent:
5620356, Apr 15, 1997
Filed:
Jan 27, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/379791
Inventors:
Stanley Lackey - Moorpark CA
Lauren Lackey - Moorpark CA
Gordon Grosslight - Moorpark CA
International Classification:
B24B 4900
US Classification:
451 5
Abstract:
A magnetic resistive head lapping system is disclosed herein which incorporates an automatic applied force lapping fixture for row tool balance and bow correction. The fixture is mounted over a rotatable lapping plate and is effective to present a row tool or slider bar with magnetic heads deposited thereon to the abrasive surface of the lapping plate in proper orientation during batch fabrication of the magnetic heads. The fixture includes a stationary assembly and a movable assembly on which the row tool and slider bar are carried. A pair of electromagnetic actuators on the stationary assembly correct for balance while three electromagnetic coils on the movable assembly correct for row tool bow. A closed loop control system employs multiplexed lapping signals derived from electrical lapping guides or resistors carried on the slider to calculate forces required to correct for row tool balance and bow which are then introduced to the electromagnetic actuators for adjusting the row tool bending moments and for moving the movable assembly in relation to the lapping plate.
