Arrangement For Securely Mounting An Exhaust Manifold To The Cylinder Head Of An Internal Combustion Engine

US Patent:
2005026, Dec 8, 2005
Filed:
Feb 28, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/069892
Inventors:
Christian Smatloch - Paderborn, DE
Wilfried Rostek - Paderborn, DE
Graham Bush - Troy MI, US
Assignee:
BENTELER AUTOMOBILTECHNIK GMBH - Paderborn
International Classification:
F01N007/10
E01B001/00
E01B025/28
US Classification:
060323000
Abstract:
An exhaust manifold has a head flange constructed for receiving at least two exhaust pipes arranged side-by-side, and includes spaced apart first and second longitudinal flange portions. A mounting assembly is provided for sealingly securing the exhaust manifold to a cylinder head of an internal combustion engine and includes a mounting rail formed with a shoulder which laps over the first longitudinal flange portion and contacts the first longitudinal flange portion in a spring-elastic manner. Plural screw fasteners at least indirectly clamp the second longitudinal flange portion to the cylinder head.

Exhaust Pulse Control Unit And Method

US Patent:
2006013, Jun 22, 2006
Filed:
Dec 20, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/313840
Inventors:
Graham Bush - Troy MI, US
Jason Kolk - Waterford MI, US
International Classification:
F16L 11/12
US Classification:
285049000
Abstract:
An exhaust pulse control unit and related method comprise an inlet tube communicating with incoming exhaust gas, an outlet tube communicating with exiting exhaust gas, and a housing extending between and connected with the inlet tube and outlet tube at opposite ends thereof. At least one pulse capture and expansion zone is disposed between the inlet tube and an intermediate zone portion of the housing, and is configured to increase exhaust manifold vacuum in an associated internal combustion engine. A first connector flange, having an attachment portion and central aperture, is connected with an inlet end of the housing. A second connector flange, having an attachment portion aligned with the attachment portion of the first flange and a central aperture, is connected with the inlet tube. The central aperture of the second flange has a beveled surface formed integrally therein to define a nozzle which forms the pulse capture and expansion zone. A fastener detachably, yet securely, connects the attachment portions of the first and second flanges to form an airtight seal between the inlet tube and the housing.

Active Intake Muffler

US Patent:
2006023, Oct 26, 2006
Filed:
Apr 25, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/380102
Inventors:
Oliver Seibt - Paderborn, DE
Graham Bush - Troy MI, US
Assignee:
Benteler Autmobiltechnik GmbH - Paderborn
International Classification:
F02M 35/12
F02M 35/14
F01N 1/06
US Classification:
12319800E, 181206000
Abstract:
An active intake muffler for an air intake duct of an internal combustion engine includes a control unit, a sensor assembly operatively connected to the control unit, and a diaphragm constructed to be resistant to heat and moisture. The diaphragm is acoustically coupled with a flow of intake air in the air intake duct and has a surface which confronts the flow of intake air. A transducer is operated by the control unit for causing the surface of the diaphragm to vibrate in a bending vibration mode to thereby produce a structure-bone sound in dependence on noise caused by the intake of air.

Active Exhaust-Noise Attenuation Muffler

US Patent:
2007006, Mar 22, 2007
Filed:
Mar 10, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/373831
Inventors:
Oliver Seibt - Paderborn, DE
Graham Bush - Troy MI, US
Assignee:
BENTELER AUTOMOBILTECHNIK GMBH - Paderborn
International Classification:
F01N 1/06
US Classification:
181206000
Abstract:
An active exhaust-noise attenuation muffler for an exhaust pipe includes a control unit, a sensor assembly which is operatively connected to the control unit, and a gas-tight diaphragm constructed to be resistant to exhaust gas in the exhaust pipe and acoustically coupled with a flow of exhaust gas in the exhaust pipe. The diaphragm has a surface which confronts the exhaust gas. A transducer is operated by the control unit for causing the surface of the diaphragm to vibrate in a bending vibration mode to produce a structure-borne sound in dependence on exhaust noise.
